Welcome“The rise of resistance to antibiotics (Antimicrobial Resistance, AMR) is largely a consequence of human action, and is as much a societal problem as a technological one.” These were the choice words of Dr Helen Lambert who is the new Antimicrobial Resistance Research Champion for the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The challenge to tackle antimicrobial prescribing in hospitals is a global concern. Healthcare organisations across the globe are implementing antimicrobial stewardship programmes in e or ts to tackle the rising tide of antimicrobial resistance. Numerous interventions are implemented in a variety of di er ent ways. Despite this, many challenges remain.

To date, the social science perspective has been neglected from research and implementation work in antimicrobial prescribing. Two key features unique to antimicrobial prescribing are 1) the concept of collateral damage manifested as emergence of resistance; and 2) the ubiquitous prescribing of antimicrobials across all specialties in hospitals. These features mean that a better understanding of the barriers and facilitators to e ec tive, safe and optimised antimicrobial use requires a better understanding of the social science perspective which in uenc es decision making in this eld . By bringing together academic and clinical experts, we aim in this meeting to present to you the latest evidence in social science research in this eld and t o use examples from clinical practice to demonstrate why it is important to address it as part of successful antimicrobial stewardship implementation programmes

The meeting, which regularly attracts over 200 delegates, will be of interest to microbiologists, infectious disease physicians, pharmacists, scientists, infection control specialists, colleagues in industry and professionals allied to the eld of inf ection and antimicrobial chemotherapy.
