Last year we matched 709 children in strong and enduring professionally supported 1-to-1 mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Our matches grew by six percent in a year when most agencies matched fewer kids than in the year before.

But that’s not enough. In New Mexico, 44 percent of high school age children fail to graduate within four years. That figure rises to 48 percent for Hispanic students and 50 percent for Native Americans.

Youth identified to be a higher than average risk for failing to complete their high school education benefit greatly from being matched with an adult mentor, specifically in the areas of improved school performance, better school attendance, higher GPAs, higher self-confidence and better attitudes toward school.

In the counties we serve, we project that 18,000 or more kids need mentoring. If every at-risk youth in New Mexico had a caring adult mentor, many statewide education and work force issues could be dramatically improved.

You can help. In our new strategic plan we vowed to match ten percent of kids in need in northern New Mexico by 2020. That means we need lots and lots and lots of wonderful new mentors. And the best source of new Bigs is. . . . YOU!

JUST ONE If each of our current Bigs and Board folks and donors refers just one Big, we can change the lives of 1,800 kids. Your friend, your coworker, your family, or you: who will your Big be?

Thanks so much for all you do!

Elizabeth Pinson had known about Big Brothers Big Sisters for years. Her friend, Jane Bernard, had been a Big Sister to a girl named Corinne for seven years. Elizabeth had the pleasure of accompanying Corinne and Jane on a few of their match activities and watching Corinne grow up into a confident young lady. “I thought it was so neat to be a witness to that kind of mentoring,” says Elizabeth. I had never thought about it before and I’m forever grateful to Jane for introducing me to the program.”

After attending the Mayor’s Ball 2010, which benefited Big Brothers Big Sisters, Elizabeth was once again inspired by her friend Jane, who spoke at the event and created a touching video for the program.

“I’m so impressed that Corinne went to college out of state, attended grad school and traveled the world – and that no one had ever done that in her family. It takes a supportive environment to do that – support that can’t always come from family,” explains Elizabeth.

At the Mayor’s Ball that evening, Elizabeth gave a donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters because she wanted to support what she saw. “I knew about the situation with Corinne and Jane, and I had seen the changes and heard the stories that were shared at the Ball,” says Elizabeth. “Big Brothers Big Sisters is a very worthwhile investment that supports positive growth and goes full circle. Whether you’re a Big or a donor, you support the organization that supports the Bigs and Littles.”

That night, Elizabeth did more than give a monetary donation – she also signed up to be a Big Sister. She was matched in December 2010 with Marissa, a delightful eight-year-old. Watching Marissa grow up has been a wonderful education for Elizabeth, and the two of them have so much fun together. Marissa is very creative, and they like doing art projects, reading and going to museums.

As Marissa gets older, Elizabeth will encourage her to finish school and to get some kind of continuing education afterwards. “I want Marissa to know that she has options – some that she may have never been presented with before,” explains Elizabeth. “I want to encourage her to think about what she would like to do with her life and to have dreams.”

In October 2011, it was Elizabeth and Marissa’s turn to inspire the audience, as they told their story during The Little Gala For a Big Cause. “Young people need to have strong community support to build lives beyond their families, to help them get through tough spots, to encourage them to look beyond typical patterns and to learn healthier ways to live their lives. Big Brothers Big Sisters helps provide that for kids, and provides support for their families.”

It isn’t luck that helps some kids succeed - it’s volunteers and

supporters like you!

In order to help us serve 805 kids in 2012, we are asking our supporters to think of one person– JUST 1, that would be a great Big

Brother or Big Sister and tell them about the program. Maybe it’s a friend, a co-worker, a significant other, a neighbor – maybe it’s

YOU! Just a few hours a month is all it takes to make a difference and help kids succeed.

Contact your local office today (see contact information on pg. 8) or visit us

on the web at www.bbbsnorthernnm.org to find out how you can start something

BIG in your community.

Regional BoardsOur goal is to serve 805 children in 2012...

Yes, that is a really high number and a huge percentage increase over the goal of 700 last year. When I wonder if we can achieve this goal – I look at this photo of Program Specialists Iris Hillis and Kenna Chavaria standing with Rocky in Philadephia. This photo just says it all. Yes we can set high goals and realize them with the support of our Amazing Volunteer Mentors, our Executive and Regional Board Members, and our generous community, corporate partners and staff!

But just serving large numbers isn’t enough. Our goal is to document “what we achieve” and “why it matters” on an ongoing basis. With the Youth Outcome Survey, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern New Mexico has the capability to measure and report on the success of our matches, with a

rigorous methodology that is unmatched in the mentoring community.

The first-ever Big Brothers Big Sisters Youth Outcomes Summary, released in 2012, substantiates that BBBS mentoring programs have proven, positive, academic, socio-emotional and behavioral outcomes for youth in areas linked to high school graduation, avoidance of juvenile delinquency and college or job readiness.

The new Youth Outcomes Report substantiates what we get the opportunity to see first-hand—that our programs are having a positive, life-changing impact in multiple areas that are directly linked to future success. This is a real milestone as we hold ourselves accountable to the children and families we serve, and our volunteers, donors and community partners who provide the resources that make our work possible.

Program Specialists Iris Hillis and Kenna Chavaria believe they can accomplish this goal, and so do the rest of the staff and boards.

had a Statistically Significant Improvement in three specific areas:●Social acceptance●Education expectations – (specifically the expectation to finish high school)●Parental trust

Thank You For Helping Us Make More Matches!

1. In December, we were notified that the Big Brothers Big Sisters community-based mentoring model has been reviewed and approved by the National Registry of Effective Practices (NREPP), a leading authority on evidence-based programs. In the world of evidence-based programs, having the endorsement of NREPP carries tremendous credibility for our government and other funding partners.

2. Our “intentionality” work continues to gain recognition. In late November, the National Congress of American Indians, the most influential national organization in Indian country, passed a resolution supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring of young Native Americans. Support from this Native American legislative body opens the door for significant tribal mentoring and partnership opportunities for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

3. Philanthropedia named Big Brothers Big Sisters its #1 rated high impact national non-profit serving at-risk youth!
