Release screws.Unfasten screwsand.Remove upper section of microfilter

housing.Installation:

Make sure upper section of

microfilter housingis correctlyseated.

Replacement:

Release catches.Release microfilterin direction ofarrow from upper section of housing

.Installation:

Make sure microfilteris correctlyseated.

Necessary preliminary tasks: Remove upper section of microfilter housing .

Release holder.

Release catches.

Remove right cover.

Installation:

Make sure right coveris correctly seated.

Left coveris removed in same way as right

cover.

Also for E90:

Release cable holderand remove hosefromcover.

Installation:

Make sure cable holderand hoseare

correctly seated in opening.

Press detent lugs.

Release cable stripin direction of arrow from

lower section of microfilter housing.Installation:

Detent lugsmust not be damaged or missing.

Make sure cable stripis correctly seated.

Feed out microfilter housing lower sectionin

direction of arrow and remove.

Installation:

Make sure microfilter housing lower sectionis

correctly seated.

acoustic cover (N52)

Important!

Aluminium-magnesium materials.

No steel screws/bolts may be used

due to the threat of electrochemical

corrosion.

A magnesium crankcase requires

aluminium screws/bolts exclusively.Aluminium screws/bolts must be

replaced each time they are released

.

The end faces of aluminium

screws/bolts are painted blue for the

purposes of reliable identification.

Jointing torque and angle of rotation

must be observed without fail (risk ofdamage) .

Release screws (1 and 3).

If necessary, release oil capindirection of arrow.

Installation:Make sure intake filter housing is correctly seated in relation to intake duct and bearing pins.

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Read out fault memory of DME

control unit

Switch off ignition

Only when replacing housing:

Remove air-mass flow sensor

Unlock plug (1) and remove.

Release clamp and detach air intake

hose.

Detach intake filter housingfrombearing pins of rubber mounts and

from air intake hose and remove.

Note:

Check stored fault messages.

Now clear the fault memory.

Special tools required: 00 9 120

Important!

Driving without the tension strut is not permitted.

(Risk of damage to the body).

Tension strut screws must be tightened to torque

and then tightened down with special tool 00 9

120 .

Important!

Catchand sealof covermust not be

damaged.

Even a minimally damaged covermay result in

water leaking in; if necessary, replace cover.

Note:

Two possible versions of cover:A) Turn cover (with notch) approx. 45

counterclockwise

B) Snap out cover (without notch) in upward

direction

Remove coverand release screw underneath.

Release screw.

Grip grommetand pull out tension strutin

direction of arrow.Note:

Grommetmust not be pulled out of bulkhead

because this eliminates the possibility of correct

feeding in when installed.

Replace screws.

Carefully feed tension strutinto grommet.

Tighten down screws to specified torque and then

retighten to angle of rotation using special tool 00

9 120 .

Remove suction filter housing .

Remove engine cover .

Open holder (2).

Disconnect plug connection (1) undemanifold.

Release both crankcase breathers

Release fuel railand lay to oneside.

Note:

Do not detach fuel line.Release screw.Unscrew nuts (3).

Tightening torque: 11 61 1AZ .

Raise intake manifold approx. 10 cmDisconnect plug connectionatbottom.

Release tank vent line behind throttle

valve assembly.

Installation:

Replace all seals.

Assemble engine.
