INTRODUCTION

A message from the cabinet member for children, schools and adult care at Southwark Council

Dear parents and carers

Brilliant schools give young people the great start in life they deserve.

As Southwark Council’s cabinet member for children, schools and adults care, I’m delighted to present youwith this fantastic brochure to help you choose one of our excellent secondary schools for your child.

I am so proud that Southwark’s schools provide the high standard you need for your child to reach their full potential. 19 out of 20 secondary schools in Southwark are judged good or outstanding by Ofsted. We are working hard to drive standards up so all our pupils attend a school that exceeds London averages atevery stage.

We want every child to do well and enjoy their experience of schools in Southwark. This is why the Council isworking closely with schools to promote a whole schools approach to mental health awareness. The Council isalso investing £2m to improve preventative services, so that we can promote good mentally healthy schoolsright across the borough.

You and your child can select up to six schools that you would most like your child to attend.

Here we give you information about what each school can offer your child over the next five years. Someschools specialise in arts, maths, languages, science or digital technology, and so it is important to get a goodunderstanding of what is on offer when making your preferences. I encourage you to attend open days andevenings to take a tour of the schools and meet the teachers. Dates for open days and evenings are alsoincluded within this brochure.

All applications for secondary school places must be made using our online application atwww.southwark.gov.uk/schooladmissions. If you need help accessing the online application, then you canuse the internet for free at any Southwark library or MySouthwark customer service point, with staff on handto provide help.

If you have any queries about schools in Southwark, do please get in touch with me [email protected] or on 020 7752 0322. Alternatively, Southwark Council’s school admissionsteam is always on hand to guide you through the process. You can reach them [email protected] or 020 7525 5337.

I wish you the very best.

APPLICATIONS

How the decision to offer a school place is made

n Each of the schools you have named aspreferences on your application will beconsidered individually.

n If you have listed any schools outside ofSouthwark, we will send your preferences tothose boroughs electronically.

n All of Southwark’s secondary schools are noncommunity. Where a school has received moreapplications than there are places available, thegoverning body of each school applies theiroversubscription criteria and decides whichapplicants are to be offered a school place. Toview a summary of each school’s oversubscriptioncriteria please view page 19 onwards.

n Once each school has prioritised applicationsbased on their oversubscription criteria, they willeach provide a ranked list to Southwark Council’sschools admissions team.

n If more than one offer can be made from your list of preferred schools, we will check your application to see which one is rankedhighest and offer you that place. Any schoollisted as a lower preference will be automaticallywithdrawn so that these places can be offered to other applicants.

n Your child will only receive one offer of a school place.

n If your child is a Southwark resident and it is notpossible to offer him/her a school you have listedas a preference, we will offer an alternative place at a school with capacity. This is likely to be the nearest Southwark school to the child’shome which has a vacancy.

Offer of a school place

n You will receive an email after 5pm on 2 March2020 which will provide information on what todo next. You will also be able to view theoutcome of your application on the eAdmissionswebsite during the evening of 2 March 2020.

n Application results will not be provided over the telephone.

n Please note that the offer of a school place isconditional until proof of your address has beenconfirmed by the school.

n Original copies of the following will be required:

– Child benefit documentation, or if you are no longer eligible to receive child benefit, a letter from the HMRC confirming that you were previously in receipt of child benefit

– Council tax bill

– One other proof of address, e.g. TV licence, bank statement, credit/store card statement.

Respond to your offer of a school place

n Your child’s offer will be automatically accepted ifyou are a Southwark resident and his/her detailswill be forwarded to the allocated school after 16 March 2020.

n This offer of a school place will remain availableunless you notify us of any other suitablealternative arrangement for education that hasbeen made for your child. You must notify theschool admissions team by email [email protected] andinclude your unique application reference numberby 16 March 2020 so that another child may beoffered the place.

APPLICATIONS

If you are not offered a school of your preference

Waiting listsn If it has not been possible to offer a place at any

Southwark schools named as a higher preferenceon your application, your child’s name willautomatically be added to their waiting lists.

n You may also ask for your child’s name to beadded to the waiting list of any out of boroughschools listed on your application. Please contactthe local authority the school is located in forfurther information.

n The school admissions code requires admissionauthorities to hold their waiting list strictly in orderof the priorities of their published oversubscriptioncriteria. If your child's name is added to a school'swaiting list, their position may go up or down thelist depending on whether any late applicantshave been added and how the oversubscriptioncriteria applies to these children (i.e. if a lateapplicant meets a higher admissions criterion thanothers already on the list, they will be given ahigher waiting list position). This then ensures thatif a vacancy arises at a school at any time, theadmissions criteria is used to determine whichchild is offered a place from the waiting list.

n Southwark Council’s school admissions team hold waiting lists for all Southwark schools until31 August 2020 and will contact you should aplace become available at your preferred school.

n If a conditional offer made from a waiting list is not accepted within five working days it will be withdrawn and offered to the next child on the list.

n If you change address whilst on a waiting list, evidence of the new address will be requiredwhen measuring for the home to school distancecriterion.

Appealsn You have the right to appeal to an independent

appeal panel against the decision not to offer yourchild a place at a preferred school. The emailcontaining the outcome of your child’s applicationwill also include information about how to appeal.

n You will need to contact each school directly torequest their individual appeal form and forfurther information on the deadline for submittingyour appeal paper work.

n For further information about the appeals processplease contact Southwark Council’s schooladmissions team on 020 7525 5337 or byobtaining a copy of the School AdmissionsAppeals Code from the Department for Education(DfE), contact details on page 48.

Oversubscription criteria 2020 (summary)contact academy for full criteria

We will offer a place to students whose education, health and care plan or statement of specialeducational need specifically names Harris AcademyPeckham (maximum five per cent of intake) andlooked after children.

We will apply a banding system for the remainingplaces, as follows:

All applicants must take a non verbal reasoning test(NVR) that places them in a rank order.

We will then place all applicants in one of five abilitybands, each containing, as far as possible, the samenumber of children based on their performance inthe NVR. This ensures that the ability profile of ourintake reflects the range of all applicants.

Within each of the five bands, we have thefollowing categories and offer places in priorityorder as listed below:

1. Looked after children and previously looked afterchildren who ceased to be so because they wereadopted (or became subject to a childarrangement/residence or special guardianship order)

2. Students for whom it is essential that they beadmitted to the academy because of significantmedical or social needs. This must be supported by written professional evidence from a doctor orsocial worker

3. Siblings, (including half, step, foster and adopted)who are on roll at the academy at the time ofadmission and who will be living with the student atthe same permanent address on their date of entryat the academy

4. Students who are in attendance at Harris PrimaryAcademy, Peckham Park and Harris Primary FreeSchool, Peckham

5. Proximity of the child’s permanent address to theschool – closest first. The distance which determineshow close a student lives to the academy is thestraight line measurement from the student’spermanent home address to the main entrance ofthe academy

Tie-breaker: If at the end of the process two ormore applicants are tied for last place and it is notpossible to decide who is allocated the place usingthe criteria above, the place will be decided byrandom allocation, independently verified
