Starting your BIM Journey

Im going to take the audience through a typical BIM journey if you decided to sign up to the NBS national BIM library,1

What is a typical NBS National BIM Library Journey?

What happens to my objects when they are complete?

What do I need to think about when selecting a third party to create my BIM objects?

What do NBS have to help me author my BIM objects?

Few questions I hope to answer for you by the end of this presentation.

There is a lot to think about when you are starting your BIM journey, who should author your objects, in house a third party. We will be hearing next from Lee at ideal standards who will be taking you through an internal authoring process, Ill then go onto some top tips what to look and when you are looking to third parties to author your objects.

2

A typical authoring contract BIM journey which Ive been through with many manufacturers.

You start your journey with a BIM consultant here you will look at what potential products you would like in BIM, suggest with BIM being so new to everyone you start with a set of priority set of products. Once this is all sorted and your signed up thats when it would get passes across to the technical team. 3

Step 1 - Welcome CallConfirm we have all CAD to author geometry

Confirm we have technical data sheets

Aimed time to deliver contract is 13 weeks

Make you aware there are some parts where we need your help

Here we will introduce a technical contact to guide you through your BIM journey.

Step 2 Data

This is what we call a property schedule we will take your technical data sheets which you provide at the beginning of the journey and create a data set using that information.

We will structure it into a format which will be embedded into a BIM objects. This will allow the designers to extract the data from your BIM objects as and when required.

NBS_General give the BIM object a identity NBS Data Key characteristics taken from specIFC is trying to standardise the way the industry talks about products globallyCOBie this is when we talk about BIM level 2, providing this data helps designers to meet BIM level 2,

Step 3 - Geometry

Next step is the geometry so we will take your CAD and transport them into the 3D world.

The geometry has other aspects too, creating BIM objects which behave in the simulation, which function how they work in the real world.
