A well-documented inventory ensures that collectors are sufficiently prepared, in terms of insurance coverage, to deal

with a potential loss. A detailed list of all pieces destroyed, damaged, or stolen is required to file an insurance claim.

Proper documentation ensures a faster and smoother claims process, as well as maximizing the insurance reimbursement.

Documented proof of ownership is required to receive a settlement covering the full extent of the loss - the burden of

proof rests with the collector.

most homeowners and business insurance policies cover jewelry losses

at a reduced limit – typically a maximum figure between $1,000 and

$2,500 (depending upon the insurance company). This would include

any pieces that consist of precious metals (gold, silver, platinum) and

precious stones (diamonds, colored gemstones). Therefore the cost

of replacing or repairing high value jewelry could be a considerable

amount of money if adequate insurance coverage is not in place. Dif-

Auctions cater best to the aficionado. often, a watch is desired by the collector that is rare, and sometimes vintage. Quality auction houses will provide the collector with an opportunity to acquire, for example, a vintage Patek at today’s market price that may not be available elsewhere.

The secondary market often offers advantageous pricing but also beware. in many ways watches are like art in that you need to know what you are buying. There are excellent secondary outlets, for example a quality jeweler selling a watch that his customer traded in. most vintage watches are sold on the secondary market. The key is to know the seller. A quality jeweler selling a vintage watch is very common. often this will allow you to purchase an authentic timepiece at a highly discounted price.

Magnetic fields: avoid placing your watch on electronic units, which can generate powerful magnetic fields.

Chemical products: avoid direct contact with solvents, detergents, perfumes, cosmetic products etc., since they may damage the bracelet, the case or the gaskets.

temperatures: avoid extreme temperatures above 60°c or 140°f below 0°c or 32°f or extreme temperature changes.

salt water and the dive watch: Just like it is a good idea to rinse the body off after swimming in the ocean, the dive watch should be rinsed after use as well. even though it is made from stainless steel, it is still a good idea to wash off the salt water.

Use a soft Watch cloth to Wipe off the dust, fingerprints, etc.: employ a soft cloth to keep watches clean and dust free. for tarnish or brightening up gold watches, use a Jeweler’s polishing cloth to restore the original luster.

invest in deployment Clasps for Your watch straps or Bands: A watch strap will last 4-5 times longer using a deployment clasp to take it on and off. Use of a standard buckle requires pulling back on the strap to put it on and off. This daily pulling wears (creases) the strap around the buckle. A deployment clasp avoids this and it is easier to use and safer (less likely to accidentally slip and drop the watch while putting it on). A deployment clasp works much the same way as a bracelet.

preserve watch straps in hot, sticky weather: Watch straps can get sweat marks on the inside and this can quickly degrade a strap with a soft leather lining. Use a water resistant strap, or one made out of synthetics, in warm weather. There are also products to treat leather (i.e. refined beeswax) to keep straps in good condition.

invest in a link pin remover, or spring Bar tool, to Change straps or size a watch Bracelet: A deluxe Link Pin remover can save a trip to a Jeweler and pay for itself in one or two uses. They are easy to use, and they will not scratch the watch. To easily switch out leather straps, invest in a spring bar remover tool. They are available for little money, and they make quick work of changing your straps.

expert attention: Take your men’s watches and ladies watches to a watch expert every three to four years. A professional can fine-tune mechanical and automatic movements and change quartz batteries. Watches can be sensitive instruments, and having the routine main-tenance performed on a schedule will ensure that your luxury designer watches continue to keep time accurately.

have Mechanical watches Cleaned and oiled on a regular Basis: The standard recommendation for having mechanical watches oiled and cleaned is about every 4 to 5 years. keeping a watch serviced will help to keep it running smoothly and in tiptop shape.

Crown down: Place the watch crown side down on a nightstand or dresser, making it less likely to scratch the side of the watch since only the crown makes contact with the surface.

store the watch Collection in a watch Box: rather than keeping a watch collection loosely arranged in a dresser drawer, invest in a good watch box that keeps watches nicely displayed and safe from scratches. Large or extra large dial watches should be stored on the end slots, or skip a slot in between, to keep the crown from contacting another watch in the box.

rotate watches and/or invest in a good watch winder: With automatic (self-winding) and manual (hand wound) watches it is important to keep them running by rotating watch use. if a watch sits unworn, for a long period of time, the lubricant can clump up or pool and doesn’t get evenly distributed. A watch winder can help keep automatic watches in good condition. for manual watches, wind them frequently to keep them running at their best.

replacement Cost. This valuation provision provides for replacing the old damaged property with new replacement property at today’s replacement cost, without any deduction for depreciation. in order to determine this cost, the claims adjuster will review the appraisal on file for the watch that is the subject of the loss, and replacement will be of like kind and quality.

specified value. Also referred to as Agreed Amount, this valuation clause stipulates that the limit agreed to (at the time of policy issuance) by both the insurance company and the policy holder with regard to a specific watch is the maximum that will be paid for that piece in the event of a loss. Generally the appraised value is used, but it could be set at the appraised value plus some percentage, if the piece is one that will appreciate in value over time.
