A ROUGH AND TUMBLE 2016 Faced with a tremendous amount of adversity in 2016, the Byrd Yellow Jackets limped to a 4-7 record. It was Byrd’s first losing campaign in seven seasons. Despite starting out 0-5, the Jackets did manage to win four straight before losing their final two games.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE TEAM The Byrd Yellow Jackets finished the 2016 season with a 4-7 overall record after losing in the first round of the LHSAA Division I playoffs, 27-15, to the St. Augustine Purple Knights. The loss marked the first time the Yellow Jackets were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round since suffering a 44-13 loss to Ouachita in the opening round of the 2010 playoffs. The Yellow Jackets lose five offensive starters and eight defensive starters as well as the punter and place kicker off of the 2016 team due to graduation.

THE LAST TIME OUT St. Augustine quarterback Justice McCoy ran around and through Byrd’s Purple Swarm Defense for three touchdowns and he passed for another to lead the Purple Knights to a 27-15 first round win in the LHSAA Division I playoffs at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orle-ans. McCoy finished the night with 55 rushing yards on 12 carries and three touchdowns. Through the air, he was 10-of-12 for 199 yards and a touchdown. With the win, the Purple Knights advanced past the first round of the Division I playoffs for the first time in three years. Byrd’s Javien Wilson rushed for 117 yards, while quarterback Carson Dunn was 5-of-6 passing for a season-high 121 yards and two touchdowns, in the losing effort.

THE SEASON To say the 2016 was a tumultuous one would be an understatement. The Byrd Yellow Jackets started the season losing its first five games, a first in the Mike Suggs era. Byrd did respond by winning four straight games, including a thrilling 36-34 triple overtime win over district rival Airline. However, the Jackets faced tremendous adversity from the end of spring to the end of the season. Injuries played a major part in the lack of success in 2016. Byrd lost seven offensive and three defensive starters to injury from this year’s team, including three-fourths of the starting backfield. If you add those 10 starters to the 20 starters lost to graduation from the 2015 team, Byrd essentially lost 30 starters over the course of a season. That amount of attrition is hard to overcome.

THE COACHES Mike Suggs just completed his 19th season as the head coach at C.E. Byrd. Suggs, who is the school’s all-time winningest coach, owns a 141-73 (.659) record as the top Jacket. DIVISION I PLAYOFFS RECAP With the LHSAA voting in January of 2016 to revert back to using attendance zones over parish lines to determine “select” and “non-select” status, Byrd returned to the Division I select playoffs in 2016 after a two-year hiatus. In 2013, Byrd reached the Division I State Championship game before suffering a heartbreaking 23-22 loss to the Rummel Raiders. Byrd was in the No. 10-seed in the 13-team 2016 LHSAA Division I Playoffs. The Yellow Jackets traveled to New Orleans and venerable Tad Gormley Stadium to do battle with the No. 7 seed St. Augustine Purple Knights. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets were de-feated 27-15 by the Purple Knights. District 1-5A rival Evangel would go on to capture the Division I State Championship. The No. 5 Eagles crushed the No. 2 Scotlandville Hornets, 38-6, in the Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA Prep Classic Division I State Championship on Dec. 2 in the Mercedes Benz Superdome.

THE 2017 SCHEDULE Coach Mike Suggs has put together a very challenging slate of game for the 2017 season. The Jackets will play the Calvary Cavaliers in the 2017 season opener, then in week two they will participate in the Landers Dodge Battle on the Border High School Football Showcase. The Jackets will play the Madison County, MS Jaguars in the final game of the Battle on the Border. In week three, Byrd will take on the Sulphur Golden Tornadoes for the first time since 1965. The start of District 1-5A play begins in week four with the Haughton Buccaneers. The “Backyard Brawl” with Captain Shreve highlights week five and then the crosstown matchup with Southwood in week six. Weeks seven through nine has Byrd facing Parkway, Evangel and Airline. Suggs is still looking for a week 10 oppo-nent.

OUTLOOK FOR 2017 2016 was a very tough year for Byrd football program. After three straight seasons with double-digit wins and their first-ever appearance in the Mercedes Benz Superdome, no one would have predicted the Yellow Jackets would start out the season 0-5, and finish with a 4-7 record. Decimated by injuries and attrition in 2016, the Byrd Yellow Jackets will look to bounce back in 2017. Offensively, the Yellow Jackets lose five starters and defensively they lose eight starters. Byrd will also have to replace its punter and place kicker. The biggest loss offensively will be along the line where the Jackets will have to replace All-District tackle Zack Ward as well guard Jake Shadrix and tight end Christian Gulledge. One area that should be strong and deep in 2017 is the backfield where quar-terback Carson Dunn, wingbacks Javien Wilson and Lawson Jackson and fullback Charlie Barham all return. Those four backs were among the top five rushers on the team and accounted for 15 of Byrd’s 20 rushing touchdowns in 2016. The rushing game should get a boost from the expected return of wingbacks Jalen Thomas and Sammy Miletello. Thomas was lost for the season after suffering a knee injury in the third quarter of the season opener at Barbe. Miletello missed the entire season after injuring his knee on the final play of spring practice last year. Byrd loses eight starters off its Purple Swarm De-fense, with the defensive line suffering the most attrition. The line loses seven of its eight-man rotation, including All-District performer Shimorye Hampton. Sophomore Luke Slabaugh, who finished the season with 38 tackles, returns at linebacker. The secondary should be the strength of the defense with the return of defensive backs D’Tariea Grant, Chondrick Lofton, Avaunte Steward and T.J. Singh. Areas of concern are place kicking and punting, where sophomore Scotty Roblow will try to replace Smith and Trafford.

THE 2016 SCHEDULE, POLLS, PLAYOFFS Eight of the 10 opponents on Byrd’s 2016 schedule reached the playoffs this year. The Evangel Eagles and St. Thomas More Cougars, both won state championships in their respective divisions. The John Curtis Patriots were ranked No. 1 in the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 5A for most of the 2016 season. Despite being the No. 1 seed in the Division I playoffs, the Patriots were soundly defeated, 27-6, by the No. 5-seeded Evangel Eagles in the semifinals at Zephyr Field in New Orleans. District 1-5A members, Airline, Haughton, Captain Shreve and Parkway all reached the Class 5A Playoffs. Only the Parkway Panthers, who were the No. 4 seed, advanced past the first round. The Panthers trounced the No. 29 seed Captain Shreve Gators 60-21 in the first round. Parkway lost 61-21 to eventual State Champions Landry-Walker in the 5A semifinals.

SMITH AND TRAFFORD - BYRD’S DYNAMIC KICKING DUO In Mike Suggs’ 19 years as Byrd’s head coach, he’s had some fantastic kickers like David Hankins, John Shaughnessy, Ben Eldredge and Jake Wyss just to name a few. That trend continued in 2016. However, the big difference is that the 2016 team had two kickers instead of one. The dynamic kicking duo of seniors Ben Smith and Hardy Trafford was a real bright spot for the Jackets. Smith made five of his seven field goal attempts this sea-son, including three in one game, which tied a regular season record. Sixteen of Smith’s 34 kickoffs have resulted in touchbacks. Trafford averaged just under 40 yards a punt and has had 10 of his 36 punts downed inside the 20. The two kickers combined to go 19-of-21 on PAT kicks.

OVER THE AIRWAVES Byrd football is broadcast live on AM 1130 The Tiger. Charlie Cavell completed his 19th season as the “Voice of the Byrd Yellow Jackets” calling the play-by-play. Former Byrd defensive back Timmy Brown was the color analyst, while veteran broadcaster Marty Johnson provided sideline reports. Fans can listen to Byrd football anywhere in the world by going to www.1130thetiger.com and clicking the listen live link. Smartphone users can download the RadioPup app and select Shreveport, La., then choose 1130 The Tiger. There is an in-stadium FM frequency for all games.

ALUMNI REPORT The following is a list of former Yellow Jackets who were in the collegiate ranks in 2016: Chandler Nance - Southern Arkansas, Jordan Powell and Chris Grant - Grambling, Kieron Williams - Nebraska, Jalen Bowers - McNeese, Tony Griffin and Kirkland McCullough - Louisiana Tech, Andrew Crow - Briar Cliff University, Dominic Haggerty - East Texas Bap-tist, Jawun Jiles - Incarnate Word, Mike Taylor - Georgetown, Jamarcus Fitzpatrick - Loui-siana College, Trent Jones - Henderson State, Tray Allen - Harding University, Lawson Scott - Northwestern State, Micah Minter - Texas Southern, Gabe McDonald - Arkansas Pine Bluff, Malik Leary - Cornell and Deuce Caston - Arkansas Monticello.

A LOOK AHEAD The Byrd Yellow Jackets will kick off the 2017 regular season against the Calvary Cavaliers and their new head coach Rodney Guin. Guin, who was an assistant at CBA and previous-ly served as the head coach at Haughton, took over in January after John Bachman was not retained.
