State Game Land (SGL) 250 consists of 444 acres and is located in the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Northeast Region. The property lies within Terry Township of Bradford County. Wyalusing is the nearest populated town located approximately 4 miles northeast.

Primary access is provided by Rienze Road (State Route 2013) that bisects the center of the game lands and May Road (Township Road 394) which is along the southwest border of the tract. There are three parking areas along Reinze Road and two along May Road. A boat launch is also located at the eastern May Road parking area. There are also several gated administrative roads in the game lands. Ninety-eight percent of SGL 250 is one mile or less from a public access point.

Topography is best described as gently rolling with elevations ranging from 1140 feet to 1300 feet. SGL 250 is located in the North Branch of the Susquehanna River watershed and is drained by an unnamed tributary to Sugar Run. State Game Land 250 hosts a narrow range of land classification types that contain a wide variety of tree, shrub, and herbaceous plant species. The most common hardwood tree species are aspen, red maple, grey birch, sugar maple, black cherry, American beech, black birch, white ash, hickory, and American basswood. Limited amounts of northern red oak, white oak, and chestnut oak are present in several stands across the game land. Conifer species include eastern hemlock, eastern white pine, eastern red cedar, and Norway spruce.

There are two man-made water impoundments within SGL 250. The upper impoundment is 63 acres in size and the lower impoundment is 16 acres. These areas provide wetland habitat for aquatic wildlife and a warm water fishing opportunity.

The principal species hunted on this game lands are white-tailed deer, Eastern wild turkey, ruffed grouse, cottontail rabbit and gray squirrel. Waterfowl hunting opportunities exist for wood ducks, mallards and Canada geese. Furbearers also provide opportunities for trappers with beaver, mink, muskrat, raccoon, red and gray fox, and Eastern coyote available for harvest.

Each time a hunter buys a hunting license, the

money he spends goes toward many facets of

wildlife management. Since 1920, close to a million

and a half aces of State Game Lands have been

acquired with these funds. Each year nearly

$7,000,000 is spent to improve wildlife habitat.

Habitat improvements enhance living conditions for

non-game birds and mammals as well as those

species which are hunted. Pennsylvania hunters

willingly share these lands with the non-hunting

public, and with few exceptions, State Game Lands

are open for general use year round. Surveys

indicate that hunting accounts for only thirty-five

percent of game land usage. The remaining sixty-

five percent is used by the general public for non-

hunting purposes.

“Working Together for Wildlife” is a Game

Commission program providing everyone an

opportunity to help support wildlife management in

the areas for endangered and non-game animals.

Monies derived from the “Working Together for

Wildlife” Program are being used in Pennsylvania to

re-introduce the osprey, river otter, bald eagle,

peregrine falcon and provide habitat for other birds

and mammals indigenous to the Commonwealth.

Construction placement of blue bird houses on State

Game Lands provides needed homes for this

beautiful songbird. Islands in the Susquehanna River

have been set aside as propagations areas for non-

game shore birds. Numerous other projects are

planned on State Game Lands and other public
