Recycling Program for Flooring Tandus is pleased to provide the State of Ohio and its eligible customers with a recycling program for floor coverings. Tandus will provide the following:

• Recycling of PVC Backed Carpet Products at No Charge (Carpet Only – based on full trailer loads) • Recycling of All Other Carpeting - $1.25 - $3.00 /square yard • Take up, packing and shipment to Dalton, Georgia to be negotiated based upon a scope of work

review with the customer and to be reviewed by the State of Ohio Procurement Services. Recycling Program Description Vinyl backed carpet is the only type of carpet that is currently being fully recycled back into carpet on a commercial scale. Tandus has an extensive, fully operational program to recycle old PVC backed carpet, including its competitors’ vinyl products, back into new carpet, and to take back any other type of carpet for appropriate recycling. Tandus Flooring was the first to receive the prestigious Reclamation Facility certification from SCS. To-date the facility has recycled over 215 million pounds of carpet/waste. Our PVC backed carpet recycling program uses 100% of the material returned, and recycles the entire carpet though an extruder to become the secondary backing of our new PVC backed carpet. In high performance carpets, the secondary backing is the single heaviest component of the carpet, and has the most influence over the overall performance of the carpet. Tandus Flooring was the first manufacturer in the carpet industry to achieve a complete closed-loop program for all our products that was initiated in 1994. All carpet manufacturing waste has been eliminated through recycling. Our reclamation program enables us to include all post-consumer take-back carpet and pre-consumer manufacturing carpet waste into new recycled content floor coverings. To-date, Tandus Flooring has reclaimed and recycled over 215 million pounds of carpet and waste. Waste to landfill is now less than 0.1 ounce per square yard of manufactured goods. This commitment to and ongoing execution of a closed-loop system is the backbone of all the achievements of Tandus Flooring in leading our industry in environmental responsibility. We offer a written guarantee that all PVC backed carpet returned to us will be fully recycled, and that none of it will be land filled or incinerated including so called “waste-to-energy” incineration of otherwise improperly disposed of. Although no current capability exists to recycle other types of carpet fully back into itself, through relationships with other partners we can accept back any carpet type and have it recycled in the most economical and environmentally advantageous manner available. Because different carpet types have differing opportunities, we determine the best process on a case-by-case basis. We will provide our customers with a written description of what will be done with the non-PVC carpet we take back for recycling. ANSI/NSF 140 Certifications — no other manufacturer has the depth and range of products that are certified at the ANSI/NSF-140 Platinum level, the flooring industry’s ANSI-accredited, multi-attribute sustainable assessment for carpet standards. Tandus Flooring has certified ER3®, Ethos® modular and Powerbond® products at the Platinum level. Powerbond® Cushion and Flex-Aire® Cushion Modular achieved ANSI/NSF 140 Gold.

we have a responsibility to provide a better

solution than disposing of old carpet in landfills

or incinerators. Since the launch of FLOORE

in 1994, Tandus Flooring has partnered with

thousands of building owners to reclaim and

recycle their old vinyl-back carpet. This old

carpet is a valuable resource to us as it serves

as the feedstock for our award-winning modular

and Powerbond products. For our customers,

it is an environmentally and fiscally sound

alternative to adding to the more than five

billion pounds of carpet that is disposed into

landfills every year.

Tandus flooring has reclaimed and recycled more than 215 million pounds of carpet and waste. That’s more than 240 million square feet of carpet that hasn’t gone to landfills.

This amount equals 9 square miles of flooring or enough to cover almost half of the island of Manhattan.

Contact your Tandus Flooring account executive to determine if your vinyl-back floor covering can be recycled. We may require a small sample to confirm. Please note, there is no charge if Tandus Flooring product is replacing the existing carpet.

Your Tandus Flooring account executive will send you a Material Reclamation Request Form. This form must be submitted and approved.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is there a cost to recycle the carpet?There is no charge to recycled approved PVC-backed carpet as long as Tandus Flooring products are being purchased to replace the reclaimed carpet.

What if the carpet was manufactured by another company? No problem. Most vinyl-back (PVC) floor coverings – regardless of the manufacturer – are accepted*. In fact, most of the floor covering we reclaim and recycle – about 75 percent – was made by other manufacturers.

Will Tandus Flooring recycle broadloom carpet?Broadloom carpet is incompatible with our recycling process. In some cases, Tandus Flooring can facilitate the reclamation of broadloom carpet by third parties.

Is there a minimum or maximum amount that can be reclaimed?In most cases, Tandus Flooring requires a minimum of 3,500 square yards. That’s about enough material to fill a standard 53-foot trailer and provides for return using minimal resources. If the reclaimed material is prepared and loaded to specifications, the trailer should be able to contain 3,800 to 4,000 square yards.

If you have less than 3,500 yards, speak with your Tandus Flooring account executive as we may have a local collection site in your area that can store and combine smaller amounts.

How should the reclaimed material be packaged?Carpet tile should be stacked (minimum of 48” and maximum of 56”) on a pallet and secured to pallet using stretch wrap or plastic banding. Reclaimed Powerbond or vinyl-backed roll goods should be sized to a maximum of 48” by 60” and stacked flat on a pallet.

Can Tandus Flooring provide documentation that the reclaimed carpet has been recycled?Absolutely – Tandus Flooring will provide sworn certification that all reclaimed carpet returned to us is recycled into new floor coverings.
