L.G. Pinkston High School “Education with a Purpose”
Rigor + Relevance + Relationships = Results!
Congratulations L.G. Pinkston Class of 2014 Graduates! – You made it!
You stand now at the threshold of great change and adventure–of inestimable potential. Hold your
breath and savor this moment. It is a time you will remember always.
You have endured years of projects, essays and tests and while you reflect on this
accomplishment, don’t forget that there is a lifetime of education still awaiting you; the learning
is not over. You will want to enjoy the high point of this graduation, but the real game is now
beginning. So, get ready.
As you revel in this moment take the time to thank all who have been instrumental in helping you
achieve this milestone. It goes without saying, don't forget your family, your teachers and the
entire school community when you are passing along words of appreciation to all who have been
influential in your accomplishments. We are here for you now, and in the future; you will always
have a home at Pinkston High School.
I am exceedingly proud of you and are honored to have served you as your principal and I would
like to impart some food for thought by Harriet Tubman. “Every great dream begins with a
dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to
reach for the stars to change the world.” So be a dreamer and change the world.
Now go get ‘em.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Kastiel

To the Class of 2014
This is indeed an honor and an awesome privilege to offer words of encouragement to the class of 2014. I hold
this assignment in high regards because I truly believe that the class of 2014 will achieve greatness in the West
Dallas community, the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex, the State of Texas and beyond. I and many others have faith
in you; but that’s only part of the equation. In order for you to reach this greatness you must have faith in yourself.
Please understand that greatness is not measured by the number of zeros that you will be compensated for the
work that you do. Greatness comes from within and it will only come when you develop a true sense of who you
are.
But! Before I continue, let me share a little of who I am. I was born and reared in a small town in South Carolina
called Kingstree. I have six brothers and four sisters. I am the oldest of the boys. All of my early education was
completed in Kingstree. After my high school graduation, I attended South Carolina State University where I
received a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineer Technology. This is what I did for several years before
becoming a teacher I worked as an engineering in Greenville Texas. In May of 2005 I received a Master of
Divinity in Theology. I am currently the pastor of Outland Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church
where I have served for fourteen years in addition to teaching at LG Pinkston for the last 10 years.
I have faced many challenges as a pastor and teacher that I overcame. Therefore I know you have overcome
challenges, although different from what I have experienced. If I could put a title on the book that you all have
been writing over the past twelve plus year, I would entitle the book “Against All Odds”. Today you have proven
many wrong. There have been people who have said you would not make it this far. Some have even thought the
worst for you. Many have said you didn’t have what it takes to complete this stage of your journey. This is what
I want you to say to those “haters,” look at me now! Always remember that you didn’t complete this life changing
accomplishment by yourself. There have and continue to be individuals who are praying daily for you. Those who
have helped you along the way probably have been your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings and last but
certainly not least, the many educators who have given of themselves to help you prepare for the opportunities
that will be presented to you. You are winners!
In closing let me share with you the secret to success. Whatever road life may take you down, if you have God in
your life, that road will be easier traveled. You may not know what tomorrow holds; but you can be assured of
who holds tomorrow. I want each of you to believe today that you can do all things through God Who gives you
the strength. You have overcome obstacles and barriers and with God you will continue to overcome obstacles
and barriers. When life knocks you down, don’t stay down, rise up better and stronger and more determined. Eyes
have not seen and ears have not heard about the great things that the class of 2014 will accomplish. Thank you
for letting us be a part of your “Greatness”.
