Code Name Charlotte Riley Date Statement of Intent Rationale My main focus in the 3rd year will be very image orientated; illustration and type, not in terms of copy but simply working words in my images. In the past I have definitely played it quite safe with the work that I have produced; I haven’t really tried any particular illustration styles or a style at all really because I was too embarrassed to fail but in reality I won’t know if I’m good at something unless I do try it, therefore I want this to be a big focus for me this year. The contact that I have had with freelance illustrators over the summer proved that having some sort of style is important and I hope to develop this over the next year. I don’t want it to limit my work but I do want my portfolio to show a common direction and not just a collection of, what could look like, random pieces that could look like 5 different people did them. I want to identify what I am good at; be a master of one thing not just ‘ok’ at them all. Statement of Intent My intention for the next year is to equip myself with all the skills and information that I need to achieve my goal; a successful freelance illustrator. In order to do this I will undertake a range of briefs, all of which I will try and tailor towards the style I will be developing. As previously mentioned, I don’t want a ‘style’ to limit the work that I do but I also don’t want to produce work that just looks like something I have done before, all the work that I will produce will potentially be a portfolio piece. As I aim to have a professional printed portfolio sooner rather than later, I definitely want to work a lot more on my design for print skills as this is important for all aspects of printing, not just screen printing which I have identified as something that I have no skills in. The fact that I don’t particularly enjoy the process of screen printing, it is important for me to fully understand how I can create the very high quality digital prints. 2 BRIEF (200 words) Each brief that I have written has a theme or requires a skill that I have an interest in and I have written them with the intention of developing my skills and creating worthy portfolio pieces. I enjoy doing shorter briefs so the majority of them are based on this, however I’m not sure this will fit the module structure. If not, it would be possible to combine a few of the ideas into one larger brief that would require more research and practical work. This year is really my last chance to write my own briefs that I will have such time to work on and for that reason I have written briefs that I would enjoy working on in my future career.

Statement of Intent Rationale

My main focus in the 3rd year will be very image orientated; illustration and type, not in terms of copy but simply working words in my images.

Statement of Intent

My intention for the next year is to equip myself with all the skills and information that I need to achieve my goal; a successful freelance illustrator.

2 BRIEF (200 words)

Each brief that I have written has a theme or requires a skill that I have an interest in and I have written them with the intention of developing my skills and creating worthy portfolio pieces.

3 RESEARCH

I have always seen research as an important part of a brief but sometimes I let it over power my designing. This year I want to focus more on visualising my ideas and designing throughout the whole project instead of researching for too long and then rushing the design stage at the end.

In addition to the research I will undertake for each brief, I will continuously try and gain professional feedback, mainly via email from working professionals (freelance illustrators) but also through the portfolio reviews that we will hopefully have the opportunity to attend later in the year.

4 PRACTICAL DEVELOPMENT

As previously mentioned, a main skill that I want to focus on this year is design for print. I enjoy spending a lot of time working off screen in terms of drawing etc., but I do ultimately prefer to digitise the work so that it can be scaled up and down without losing any quality and applied to different materials/contexts. In addition to the theoretical side of design for print, I also want to work a lot more with photoshop and illustrator to create more professional pieces.

In terms of other practical skills, I am not sure yet as I haven’t started planning the work or resolutions for each brief but it is possible I will develop skills in other areas i.e. screen printing or design for screen.

5 RECORDING, DOCUMENTATION & EVALUATION

My design practice blog will the leading method of recording the development of my work; I will scan my worksheets and photograph printed work. My design context blog will be the source of all contextual work I am looking at in response to the briefs, for visual inspiration.

I will continuously evaluate my work against my work rationale, the brief, the specific statement of intent that I have written, the assessable outcomes and the design context which I have been looking at, to determine whether it I am taking the right direction. In terms of feedback from others on the development work, the main source of this will be from ongoing crits and tutorials.
