Again, to give you an idea of just how the mail service is running, the number after your location is how many days the letter took to get here.

GEORGE WALTON in Easton, PA sends a note that he can't figure out the location of the pirate station on in the Easton area, says everytime he points the loop in the direction of the station, it always points to HIS house!

Yes , the radio was full of light noise again tonight, guess I'll have to pay the neighbors a visit (when they aren't home, hmmm?)-hi! It do es sort of get one disgusted, though, No wonder AM radio is turning into a s econdary service to FM!

Thanks to all who sent their tips in, some very fine catches this time. That's everything up to 10/4, next one in 2 weeks. And it looks like our deadline will end on Saturdays now, with type up Saturday evening and Sunday, if need be,

The National Radio Club operates under an accounting system whereby, if the club ceased to exist, we would refund the deferred dues to each member. The inventory, which is recorded at cost, would then be prorated to each member . Under this type of system, we usually operate with an on paper "loss• each year . If a ll publications were to be sold at once, the negative ne t worth would not exist.

If you have any questions r egarding your club's financial status, please send them to me at the HQ address.

Special thanks to t he NBA Teams for making this list poss ible.

I really do appreciate members sending in some hard-to-get info from their respective lccatior.s, but I would real ly appreciate · it if you would includ e the frequency as well as the city of lice~se, as I already have enough stuff t o do without looking up that in;!;o for a whole network. Remember , every little bit helps, and the more you help me be more efficient , the faster you can get the info. Thanks to everyone again .

Sheriffs deputies arri\·ed at KJOE's tower s ite at Aero Drive and Northway Bouleva rd about 9:30 a.m .. according to Jim Green of the Caddo Sh~riH's Department civil section . MIKE• S GETTING I.ONG 'llEEn:NDS FROK SCHOOL llIKE CSORBAY - R.R. fl - Canfield, Ontario - NOA lCO

Hi y•all. I had some fair DX to start September, logging seven new in the first week, but things have slowed down to a crawl, with eight total so far (9/17). Here goes, WWC0-1240 9;1+, a GY achievement, but not my best; 1\'SElf-1240 9}.:; before midnight, \\'BAX-1240 & CJTN-1270 both SSS on 9/7, an cl WUB-ll90 at SSS s/off 9/ll. I thought llUB was lOkw day & night, aocording to ~'RC Log anyway. (They're listed •I-3" - they ?iln till sunset at WOWO -ERC) By the way, above-mentioned GY DX achievement was llllBll-1490 ba ck in I believe late Janua ry •BO, 1190 miles. Back in July, I had my report to WJJD-ll6e returned in about a week and a half - don't ask me why _the stanp on it said "Return to sender - Addressee Unlrnown." Addressee unknown? How hard ia it to find a radio station? Unless the address in the NRC Log is out of date (6 South llichigan Avenue), but still, a little effort never hurt anyone. (New address in an NRC Log Update is 180 North llichigan Avenue, llike -ERC) I am in a favourable position to DX for the first two months of the school year at least - we are sharing our high school with the Hagerttville students, who were forced out of their school because of an asbestos program, so we go to school on .alternate days, ~aving me a day off every othe r day. That way, I can DX every night of the day that I go to school, plus I get a lonb weekend every week, either Fri-Sat-Sun, or Sat-Sun-Kon, and we know all about l!llls, don't we? Unfortunately , nothing has come of these off-days yet, nothing heard but a few te sts that weren't IDed. Log now stands at 579 heard, but no new states, provinces or countries le. tely - still looking for Maine & ·Delaware, and also Kansas, of the fairly easy (distance-wise) states. Maybe the upcoming season will produce resul: •· Sorry to hear about the passing of NO!lll J.!AGUIRE - being a new member, I didn•t know him, but I unde rs tand a great part of the NRC has been lost with Norm•s passing, & I hope that eveeyone has a saf e DX sea son upcaning. 73s.

8009.19 - I ended up missing !RCA-Louisville, e.argh. .lt lo ast I can say it was not I who "livened up the party" with a fire alarm at 4r45am, hi. Worse, I also missed the big Toronto GTG the following weekend, double aargh. I heard enough about it through the many GWDXA members who attended & sent in reports to my column in ita bulletin ( a column amazi ng ly s imilar to this onet). Aft er the last leg of my Summer excursion (Seattle to Chicago via Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg), this last month Wlls an anti-clin.x; trips to far-away exotic lands like Milwaukee, Hsmmondj\l'hiting, Ind. & Highland Park, Ill. I got only my second taste or decent FM t rope opening ever while vi siting STEVE SHAFF'Dl in Whiting - we ended up getting five Torontos & a Buffalo (also a station from Buffalo N.Y . , hi). I thought my firth state would be Iowa , darn (hi). I•m hoping to find a non-basement location before next Summer , which woul d help a lot in FM DX department. On the MIV band, the closest thing to a new cat ch was daytime reception of nighttime regular WBCS -1340, Milwaukee. Also I got best-ever rece ption of (all daytime) WIBA-1310, Madison, WI , WKAN-1320, & WJOL-1340, all courtesy of \\FRZ-1530 Evanston being temporari l y a thing of the past. Their FM, WOJ0-105.1, is at the moment, the only commercial F'M in ChicaE;O still broadce.atine in monophonic, this while several Alls (WGN, \'IL">, 1".7.DC-17 30, to name a few) are converting or have a lready converted eq.i ipment to handle stereo as soon as they bet the OK to start broadcastin( in that mode. ® Well the conventions have come and gone and while I was unable t o make the NRC

confab in lA5 ANGELKS, I -s at the !RCA. ,et-together at Louisville which was a good time. I 1 ve detailed this happening in the Forum so I•ll not go in length here except to oongr•tulate TED FU:ISCHAKER on another 11ine !1osting job. One would have to speculate that the Derby Cit,y would be e. confab host in 1 82 if the trvnd f ollow11 I hope so. As of 9/24 I've reached a long sou,ht after :milestone on the BCB. Log total number 2,500 came in the form of the fairly new FrC on 100 lcHs, CFLP w/som.e rr and popular French Canadian versions. Their signal_,, over WCFL•s at times between 6,05 & 61 15am, might be a good one for DX.rs in this area to keep a watch on. Similarly CJllR-ll90, #2,499 is one for DXer s in the OH-KI area to watch for after local sunri•e. Thia was had at 7 1,0am on 9/17 doing a nice job of beating up WOWO from 7a.m till finally IDin' at 7130. Safe to say that FRANK l!ERRILL will buzt me for these-. last two and have some interesting quote regsrding my continued new receptions or Canadian stations, hil Locally wczy_1500 in Detroit has become WLQV & ha.a gone religious referring to themselves as "Love 1500". Gee is there another format they'd like to try? Speaking of different formats, looal ll'CWA-1230 is trying several different ones this week to entice listeners (which they should since they took gas in the last ARB ratill(;S sweep, hi\) as they will be switching from their basically bland contemporary format soon. So far they•ve run a day of big bands (were you listening, ;·;oU' J. FLYWHEEL?) and C&'ll (were ,you listening ERNIE?). (I never listen to st- tions who won•t verify for me, hi -ERC) At this point in time I have no idea. which format they'll go with but I'll keep the NRC advised. The handwriting has been on the wall for WCWA for so.., time - I guess that 1 s what happens when you let talent get away hi l (l!E). Actually f/CWA. 1 s problems grew out of adverse reaction to their dismissing popular morning Bob Kelly for

less th&ll sensible reasons and listeners have deserted the station faster than rats leaving a sinking ship. Vlhen will stations like '.'.'CF L and \'ICWA ever stop listening to those know-nothing consultants? Anyway enough of this. C U soon. 73s.

INTRODUCING JI)( WEBER - 123 Olive Street - r.est Reading , Pennsylvania - 19611

I'm a new member & I want to take the time to send in a llusing so that everyone might know a little about ..,, I' m a r esident of West Reading which is right across the river from DAVE FOX. I have been interes ted i n International Radio for 14 or 15 years and have participated in all a spects of radio s ince then. I have had an amateur license, SWLed, done broadcasting an Fll, & find that radio is the most exciting and varied medium available to us . But I don•t have to tell that to ardent 111'1 listeners \ lly basic intere st in radio is inte rnational lillSio and I would be glad to hear from those of you who tape or collect such music. My most reoent radio listening has mostl,y been on SW & I find that I know virtually nothing about the area between 500 & 1700 kHz. I'm hoping t o learn something from the contributors to DX NEWS and loolj: forward to reading eaoh issue . Equipment here consists of the venerable AR68 & some outboard attachment• to enhance performance. ANDY RUGG was kind enough to send me some info about his AR66 but I dan•t know if he ever got it fixed. The best thing about the radio is a pure and unhindered audio t hat adapts itself especially well to fat l!W signals. ~ multiplier, audio filter, and frequency me a surement accurate to 10 hz add operational value. Those of you other AR66 owners out there, please wr ite in and let the others know of the fun you have with this fabulous machine. B)e for now and good DX during the season. I hope to Muse soon again. (We hope you do too, Jim! -ERC, for the Living NRC).

During the Summer months, this year, I added 39 new ones to my log. I hope that with the ate.rt of the new season it will show a marked increase in membership activity! New ones heard since my last !duse have now pushed me past the 800 nark, They _are as follows, .On 9/1~ 71alpm WGEll..l.li40 Ill. was in very strong for several minutes with liX, ID, mx, & spot for fashion store in downtown Quincy. On 9/16@ 7:4lpm, WAV0-1420, Ga., in with end of REL program and into s/off a couple of minutes early. On 9 '20 at 7:45pm WCHI-1290, Ge . ., boomed in with all of s/off heard. Then on 9/21 at 7:44Pm to 6pm, WHIC-1520 Ky., was in like a local; with Sunday SX program, scores, mx, couple of IDs, WX & temperature report, and mx until s/off. From the strength of their signal I wonder if they were running 1,000 watts instead of the 500w during the critical hours period? Shortly a~er they a/off KOllA took this frequency over as usual. Then· on the evening of 9/23 I decided to camp out on one frequency throughout SSS & selected 1220 which reaped me three new ones as follows 1 WIBI at 6:ll;pm w/mx, then into short s/off, At 8:30pm KBCL blasted in with full s/off heard (both of these from the s~ate of La.), and at 6:45pm the s/off of KRldC, Okla. was in weak but clear ujwGAR. Then on 9/25 at 71l~pm KTUI-1560 Mo. was in briefly w/ID & mention of Sullivan, Yo. before fading out, Then on the mornin£ of 9/26 KAFZ-710 was in @ 9123am for several minutes w/ID, mx, and spot for car dealer. This is a new Arkansas station that went on the air on Aug. 16, 1960. All for now, so good DXinr; to a 11 !

HE'S GIAD THE HOT WEATHER IS GONE ® BILL TClii'NSllEND - 4500 Connecticut Avenue Nii' #901 - Washington, DC - 20006 202-966-eo46 9/26

Thank Heavens the long hot Summer of 1960 is overl Amen!! Hallelujah! Sixty-seven days or 900 or more, including 21 straight days of 900 or more, It•s beel)6.ry too (thank gosh I':n not in Texas with six weeks of ~..,.,.~P&-<tl' lOOo plus), Y:ith t he end of the extra-hot Summer, it•s more time at the dials and goodbye to bikini-cha.sing. and swimming. This month has been good to me with five newies in four days. In addition to WYCB-1340 & WOL-1450 I have several out-of-town GY pests, three in Tidewater, Va. (WNOll.1230, r.l'CE-1400 & \'iWDE J490) and one 4o miles S {WCNC-1240) in NE N.C. However, the local yokels WITH-1230 and WWIN-1400 dominate in the daytime . l\'PCE sticks out like a sore thumb. Even with severe GY QRll, it stands out, particularly when a screaming Bible-pounder is on the air {sounds like our own 7°11ST-ll20). I can get a good null on WWDC-126o but the pest from Steel town WrAE dominates 1250. It•s a slopper like WWDC. llhen l\"llDC had an llnsked SP recently, I logged ;·;CHV despite spray from VITAE. Back in my Zenith Royal-500 days of 1957-56, I used to get good catches when I nulled out ~TAE. Now when I null out ?.TAE, I get lv-,\'DC splash. Another slopping pest from Pittsburgh is Y•KTQ-1320 (ei.. WJAS), which has a stronger signal than that or local \'iEEL-1310 at the same volume setting, although both stations have 5,000W power. The proof is in the nighttime antenna pattern. other slopping pests are CKU'l-800, WBT-lllO, & \",XBW-1520. I see a rainbow when t~e sun shines on the spray these rockers put out, hi. However, I'm an ordinary listener when I hear WBT on Sunday ni;;hts With the oldies m:x (50's & 60•s.) When I hear WGY-810 play such mx on Saturday ni ghts, CKU'I slops that channel at times, I can get as good nulls on the TRF as I can on the Royal-500. WINX-1600 and YIOL-1450 are easier to null out at night than in daytime, probably because of lower power. Thanks to TOM BULL, who cleared up

the ~mystery" of 1530. No switcheroo after all_ false alarm, hi. This ends Musing #28. 73•s.

NEIL'S CALLINF FOR MORE C.P.C. !ELPERS NEIL G. ZANK - 623 l;yncrest Drive - Lincoln, NE - 68510 9/23/60

I have no DX to report so far this season, but there are some things to say anyway. First, I was sorry to hear of the passing of ROSS HA1TSCH and NORll l!A.GUIRE . They will be missed in the Club. I was motivat ed in thought by ERC•s recent comments regarding the verie collections of deceased members. And I will be interested in the response of other members• thoughts on the subject. I would even say that I would be willing to collect and store such collectione on behalf of the NRC. In other words, serve as a librarian for the collections. On a happier note, a Labor Day GTG was held here concurrent with the NRC Convention in LOS ANGELES. Turnout was light, but I think all had a good time. Those who put in an appearance were tlJ'iIL ZANK, BOE McCOY, ROLIA1'D LINDBI.ADE, PAUL SWEARINGEN, SKIP DABELSTEIN plus two loce.l?mem!iers and Skip's son Buddy. Uttle DXing was done, but a lot of talk and receiver reviewing were doje, Paul & I did a little receiver trading too. On the listening scene I heard a very tentative on KUUl-1230 on 9/13 with some TT at the right time and possible CW IDs but much interference and noise. otherwise a few unID TTs noted during sparce listening periods. One interesting th ing of note is that KOll.1.-1520 has changed formats from ROK to C&W, a real shock. Also, XERF -1570 is signing off at their midnight now since the change of no religious broadcasts in ~exico. (How about XEMO, Neil? -ERC) This makes 1570 a lll.ICh better CPC target for those at some distance from CKlll. Now is my time to get on your cases about helping out with CPC. We have a few hard working volunteers who are already makin~ progress with TESTs, but we need he l p! There are still 550 of you out there who are receiving DX NEWS that oould do something for the Club. A couple of long holdout veries were rece i ved here this Summer- WDUX & VIGGO . I do not agree with some about using a reception report.form. I feel that a form can be put to good use with neatness and personal comments as a part of them, & I use this method for all my reports. My form includes the National Radio Club l etterhead at the top. It is much better than the majority of written reports which I have seen. 73s till next Muse.

GEORGE HAD A GOOD DX SUMMER GEORGE WALTON - 314 High Street - Easton, PA - 18042 9/29/80

Hello members. V/ell, Summer has gone for another year le I just realized t hat it was a very productive one for new stations . For the th ree month period from June to September, 28 new ones were logged. My best catch was CHTN in Prince Edward Island which has since been verified. other DX included the much-wanted VIHLI on Long Island. This has always been a problem for me since ' local pest <~GPA is on 1100. All 26 stations were log:t;ed at a t ime when I only had a few minutes to devote t o DX so now is the time to start getting back to some real full time listenini.. I plan to be up every Mor:day morning from now on unless I fall asleep early which I usually do. Since I am the boss now I can take Mondays easy and get no flak from anyone, hi. On the subject of keeping ver ies for generatio.Ds in the future to see, I think there ought to be some sort of "Hall of Fame " established for t his purpose. Afte r seeing some of the veries be longing to ERKIE COOPER I would hate to think of anythirii; eve r happening to them. perhaps the current publishing committee could be responsible for the safekeeping of these items which could be brought out for display at get-togethers and Conventions. It's only an idea but something should be done instead of just throwing these documents away when a member dies or gets tired of Dlir.g. Anyon&celse have any thoughts on this? Get ready for Northern New J erseyl As ERC says - make plane nowl See you later - good DX.

DENJf.!S VROOM - 1128 Portland Xvenue 4f6 - Albany, Calil'ornia - 947o6 9/23/80 Hello. Having been a member of NRC for about three year•, I guess a Muse is

in order. My age is 30 and I have remained • in&le tor all of those long years. I work for Ford Motor Canpany. My Mr. DX1ng career started in 1966 when I purchased a 1937 Fada radio for $5.00. The antenna back then was two 75' longwires connected in parallel. My best catch with this set-up W..s KICY-850, Nome, Alaska. In l968 I moved up to an HQ-180-C and it is still my main receiver. Other radios are a Panasonic RF-2800, GE Superadio, and a TllF.

Antennas used are a 4• box loop, SJ.!-l. Albany ia located about five mile• NE of San Fran.. cisco. Three lo!X JGls are within three mile• of my location (KDU., KJIEl'I, KIQI). KNEW & ltFRC are the two local stations that cause the most slopover. Recent logging• by date are 9/10 Vladivostok-1476, China-12o6, China-lo44, China-1197, JOGB-873 Japan, KIKI-830, KORL-650, XPOI-lo40. 9/13- Xor~a-1566 (strongest TP), JaJB-774 Hapan, JOBB-828 Japan. 9/14- USSR-576, 2BI-702 Australia, 2GF-12o6 Australia. 9/20- North Korea-657. I have heard 315 stations, 31/21 states, 4/3 provinces, 22/9 countries. I do not have very many veries, but will try to improve totals. I would like to thank HANK WILKINSON for his fine reports to IDXD. F.is catches have renewed my interest in ~°17 DXing; maybe I can hear a few of them. I have been DXing with the SM-1 and 4• loop in combination. I have the SM-1 connected to the H~-180. I tune i n the desired signal on the SM-1, then adjust the unconnected box loop to peak the signal. The signal is stronger than using either loop separately. I have ordered some 1mc repri:r:ts on loop antenna•. Good DX to all this season. 73.

RICH SOUNDS THE CIARION CALL TO l!ESTERN lilEMBERS RICH TOEllE -556 Santander Drive - San Ramon, cali!'ornia - 94583 9/27/BO

More time has passed since my last Muse than I care to admit, so here goes. The nudi;e that got me to write was Ernie• s COl!l!l&nts about the inactive Vie stern members. I used to contribute a lot more to NRC in the past than I have lately, because while i'Rc is a topnotch club, it reall y is Eastern oriented, and consequent ly have been more involved with the IliCA, which is mainly Western. After having given this some thought, I have come to the conclusion that this is not a healthy situation for the hobby, because valuable interaction is lost. It•s easy to say that if you want to, you can belong to both clubs {and many do}, but it•s harder to devote full attention to both, and you end up taking sides. I wonder hair many new WC members considered contributing to DX NEWS, but didn•t because of the lack of Western" involvement. A fell Ow DXer here told me that he stopped contributing to NRC precisely because "No one else did." It•s also possible that m~y "dual• members may prefer to contribute to only one club because it would be strictly duplication. Well, if you send in carbon copies of ;.ruses to both clubs, yes, but otherwise, as PAUL MOUNT has pointed out, the clubs offer alternative approaches to providing information. They are complementary. It would be a shame to lose this. I like, for example, having loggings divided by time of day, as DAVE SC!ll<lIDT does, & I also like loggings divided by geographical area, a• is done in DX Monitor. But unless there are v;estern loggini;s in DDXD, it•s not gonna do me a lot of good. As an aside, it's good to see PAUL ZEHR of Ely, NV, reporti?ll in - I was afraid that when I moved away from Reno that the Nevada membership would dry up. Anyway, thi• is as good a ti.me a s any to start a drive to get the Vlest involved in 1'RC again. ':.'hich mean• that you' 11 be hearing from me more frequently. Hopefully if a few more Western names turn up in DX NEl'IS, this will nudge others to jump in as well. West Coast members, let•s show them Easterners the mettle we•re made oft Next )o!use, I•ll be contributing a groundwave daytime bandscan from San Ramon (which is a suburb of San Francisco, about 25 miles to the E~st. Good DX to all!

.'>AVE YOUR OLD DX 1'EWSe s ! JIM HERIGl!ER - 3255 South Drive - Caledonia, New York - 14423

ERC's recent Musing regarding deceased members• veries brings to mirid another item for consideration. Each year several members drop from the Club & I often wonder what

happens to the bulletins they have accumulated during their membership. I would be curious to find out what percentage of the membership actually saves their bulletins. Scanning the DXchani;e colUlllI>.s shows very few ads for bulletins, so I can only conclude that they are thrOMl out. Having been in the radio hobby s ince l96o and NRC s ince 1973 I have been fort unate to compile a collection of DX NEllSes dating back to 1955. Not only are they entert aining but also serve as important references to the development of our hobby. I sincere) ; bel ieve that there is a market for old builetins & I urge all members t o consider saving them for future use by a new i;eneration of DXers. Now to DX. After 20 years I have fin.. ally started Domestic DXing, as of August 18 I now have 197 stations heard. Nothint earthshaking but a lot of fun. The fir st TA•s broke through Sept. 8 with !Jlngenburg-1593 and Nice-1557. Good DX to all.

® I noted the resurrected station on 1540, 9 '27 @ 9132pm, "KCRA, Fort Worth,

now broe.dcasting on 1,000 ""tts.• Nothing else new has been heard on my various All dials but I do notice CX are gradually getting better. I had a fun Summer, especially get t ing a few long haul catches or. FM & TV and attending the IRCA & NRC conventions, I r~ally enjoyed both of •em. Those who missed the 1'RC shindig in El Segundo near LUC missed a good time & a unique, good Convention, thanks again JOHN & GREGt Some of the neat highlights were: gathering in the lounge of the Hacienda enjoying disco ax and a live band called "The All-Nite Ex.. press"; seeing •'.iARY HOUDEK of jjunden, Kan. thrilled to see the ocean for the fir•t time in his life; shoots of amazement in the meeting room upon discovering DON ERICKSON ha• a verie collection & a pretty nice one too. The t ours were unique & good, especially the Collins l!echanioal Filter plant, the Cal. Teoh earthquake detecting center & being driYen through Hollyweird & the Hills of Beverly. I•m not in favor of canbined NRC-IRCA conventiona. It would be more costly for mal:\Y, for the major eotpenae is getting to & fram a convention except for those who live close. lly hotel bill in Los Angeles wa• $138 but my round trip airplane tickets cost $36o, and if I had taken the car instead it would have cost at least 175 more than that with today•s gas prices. Chances are one club•• convention is much closer to your home than the other•s, unless it •s a~nusual year li~e 1979 when they were only 170 mile• apart. A recent trend1 Many DXers joining one of the regional clubs born in the 1970'• such as SCADS {so. Calif. Ass•n. of DXers), llIJXA (Minnesota DX ass•n.),SLIDX (st. Louis rntei:n&tional DXers, 9720 Vickie Place, St. Louis, 110 63136): .\SDA (Atlantic States DX Aes•n., 1137 East 12 Street, Brooklyn, NY 11230), SDXA {Southern DX Ass•n., formerly Yiddle Tenn. DXA, Box 213, ~lexandria, TN 37012): AIDX (Ass•n. of Ill. DXers) and others. These clubs are usually multi-band, with a monthly bulletin & monthly meetings plus one or two conventions or big picnics a year. Feel free to write me for any more info on these. More & more DXers are saving money by joining several clubs and attending the conventions held closest to them, and spending more money on receivers & club dues widenini; their listening horizons by getting into SW, FM, whatever, in addition to the All band. 73, Walt.

Back to 9/21, an unID also carrying Reds vs. Dodgers on 1450, I doubt \'11.!0H, & sure ly not WLYV, as VIQHK-l.380 carrier• Reds in Ft. Wayne. The Cincinnati Bengals are being carried by SportsOhio (a/Jc/a the Agri Broadcasting Network) this year. I don•t know if the Bengals also still run their own net or not. I would think they do, at least outside of Ohio. Any affiliate of the OAg can pick up the Bengals ,amee

free of additional charge, but SportsOhio does take up sane of the local commercial availabilities for' its own spots (which they haven•t sold yet, so now they just run "Travel Cbio• PZ:>As.) So now the A(;ri Broadcasting Network consists of, other than farm programming, SportsOhio, the Ohio Nell'8 Network, the Business Broadcasting !letwork, & the Bengals Football Network. (IAst year they carried Ohio State Football, but not this year). If this runs before 10/18, I•d like to invite those within commuting distance of Dayton, OE to join us for the lliami Valley DX Club meeting at the Dayton Amateur Radio Club, October 25. at around 9 or lOam • The highlight of the meeting will be a tour of the Voice of America transmitter site in

Mason/ Bethany, OH. This will l ean more to Sl'1 than BCB, but the VOA tour is still interesting. ~aybe we can negotiate a trip to the W'IJI' XR sit e nearby, but no pranises there. Now, the VOA cannot handle more than J5 at a time on a Saturday, not that we expect more than that, but if you plan on going to VOA we must know by 10/18. Write me at the address above for details.

This being my first lo!use I'll introduce myself before talking about DXing. I'm 32 years old, happily married and work as a chemical feed operator with the Milwaukee r.ater Works. I started DXing as a kid with a six transistor portable pulling in such rare stuff rare stuff as ·V.'BZ, KOMA, and KAAY. My most unusual experience at the time ""8

listening to KAAY playing "Baby Elephant Walk" all night while taking calls from around the countl'Y. I can•t remember what year this happened . I've Writ~en the station recently but got no help. Can anyone tell me what it WRs? ET? Some of my best reception ha• been ~IK at sunset, CKAP, CFQC, KHOW, WCBll, CHYR-7, CKBI, CJCA, WRFC, KHYll (Thanks to llRC) KTLK, 1\'0IC, KFFA, V\FBL. To a pro, these might not seem impressive, but I think it•s pretty good. I'm still loolcing for Florida, J.laine, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, & Montana. I•d like to know it anyone else out there is into Drum and Bugle Corpe? If so, do any of your local stations give it any coverage? All tor nair. (We hope for more soon, Roberti -ERC)

8009.29 I'm finally settling back in Eugene afte r seven weeks of travel · that took me across the country twice and to more cities than I care to think about. l had a chance to hear a lot of markets, and to meet lots of NRCera, many previously unmet. A mid-September cold has sort of put a damper on getting up at 51~am and searching f or DX. · I hope t o get back to this practice soon. I also have a new power line buzc problem to start the season with. I had a nice visit from GLENN JACOBS and STEVE BOHAC here at 9 Henry St~et on Saturday night 9/20. Glenn proce'eded to tune in TWR-1467 in on my HQ-180 . A poor signal from them l::ut the "music box" could be easily heard. Not too much new and fantastic as far as DX goes. 9/20- 12:21am, WQAY-560 FL now w/c/w, holding the channel t o itself. 6:52pm, l'ilAD-800 CT, leading the pack of daytimers here, T-4o mx . 11:45pm, TWR-1467, i.!onte Carl o, weak . 9.126- 8: 05pm ~•CVI-1340 l'A heard on the GE Superadio in Thornhurst ten miles from '/lilkes-3arre and \'.'BRE-1340. 8:45-9:30pm R. Paradise-825 St, Kitts here •/overpower ing signal, first time heard here and counted as a new station. They had typical preachers. Nothing on 1265 nOlf. I assume this is just a move f r om 1265 and not ~nother outlet. One musical trendI 1m noting is so many stations going c/w. Especially a lot of f ormer T-40 stations ara goin' this route. ll'QAU-560, WVAl.l-1430 PA are just a few stations noted .that switched to c/w. I can look forward t o a new semi-local here on 96o in the form of 7,'PCN-960 Mt. Pocono, PA. At leas t they will be daytime. Also the sal~ of \'o'BRE-1340 is still in the works. They are tal!>ing about dropping the NEVIS format and going t o MoR or RR format and keeping all the staff who are trained for all-NX formats . Very interesting. II. I was sorry to hear the sad news of the passing away of NORllAN :.:AGUIRE, or anyone who has spent a lifetime i~ the DX hobby & has ~assed along a wealth of knowledge & history of the early days. At the same time, to bring up again ERJIIE'• concern of QSLs going t o the trash man, these vintage QSLs are "history". Although I do not have a soluti on to the question~ present interests on the hobby come quite close. At this time, I'm spendir:g my lunch hours writing up one looso leaf page per each radio call per each frequency. Naturally this involves approximately 5,000 loose leaf pages. At the present time I've logged 24 hours & have reached a point at 960 kF~. Each sheet contains simply call letters, location, frequency. These will be later filled in with powers, earliest known QSLs (of each design) & any station history to enable me to write a brief history of the stati on & to include dates of changes. I totally invite & urge all DXers to write concerning all QSLs t hey may have. I have planned to prepare a name cr edit list of all donors. As far as pre-

. Greetings and halucinat ions. I don•t know when this miasif will land upon ERNIE, what with the present state of labour unrest in theffederal government. {Postmarked 2 X (Oct, 2) & rec'd 10/6 -ERC) However, nothing ventured, nothing gained• The main ~aeon for writing is to report on a series of low powared stations I came across in my travels this past month. They are operated by Parks Canada on 1490 kHz & I found three of them1 in Bantf, Jasper, and at the Columbia Iceflelds, all in the Ban!"f-Jasper Parks chain in Alberta . Only one, in Banff, used any call letters, CBPH . They are all extremely low power, and are used to transmit messages to people passing through the area about roads, the parks, wildlife, eto., in a continuous loop recording. The l oca l range is very limited, and if the antennas I saw were actually the ones involved, no wonder - they look sort of like short, base-loaded CB ground planes with large capacitive hats . There may be othe rs, but as those were the only two parks I was in, I can •t make a report. Referen ce to anothe r network I came across in a book in the Vancouver Public Library - "Maps - Broadcasting Undertakings in Canada" published by the CRTC. These are identified as low po~er multilingual stations, all on 1450 kHc, in Ontario1 CHOP - Gull Baf, CHEW - Helen 1.Ake1 CHOX - Pays Plat; CHAS - Aroland, and CHIP - Jlaodiarmid. There•s no reference to any of these in the last Domestic Log I have (78-79), but they are apparantly the same sort of thing as CHAP-Long1"c, which is liated in b'oth sources . This CRTC book -• aocurate as of Nov, l, 1974, published in 1975, and is catalogue number BC92-5 from Information Canada, ottawa KlA OS9, if anyone wishes t o get one. I don•t know if this stuff is news to anyone or not, but I thought I•d pass it on for whatever it•s worth. PS- CKN'/1-980, New Westminster, is pi ckini:; up llontreal Expos playoff games from CFCF . (T? -ERC) . Also, CISI-940, Richmond, is on the air.
