Introduction to Power Factor

Power factor is a measure of how effectively your electrical equipment converts electrical current into useful output power, such as heat, light or mechanical motion.

Active Power (P): Is the power used by a device to produce useful work. It is expressed in Watt (W) or KiloWatt (kW).

Reactive Power (Q): Is the power that does not produce work but is needed in an alternating-current transmission system to support the transfer of active power over the network by temporarily storing energy in inductive and capacitive elements. It is expressed in Var or Kilovar (kVAr).

Apparent Power (S): Is the power resulting by the vector sum of both the active and reactive power. It is expressed in Volt Amperes (VA) or KiloVolt Amperes (kVA).

Displacement Power Factor (cos φ): Is the cosine of angle between active and apparent power. When the DPF reaches unity, it means that all the fundamental current that flows through the electrical equipment produces work. This factor does not consider harmonic currents.

r)Benefits of addressing low Power Factor

Enables your business to lower its ongoing kVA demand charges and/or reactive charges, saving your business money.

Increased capacity available to serve actual working power requirements

Higher and better quality voltage regulation

Lower transmission and distribution losses in your electrical system

Reduces the threat of operational downtime caused by the overloading of your electrical assets.

Low power factor can lead to lower than ‘normal’ voltages within a site and consequently present unreliable equipment performance.

Many electricity network companies charge commercial and industrial customers when power factor falls below 0.95

Low power factor can lead to stressing of the internal electricity infrastructure. This may cause unnecessary overheating and equipment degeneration.

Ignoring power factor issues can increase costs for new installations, because of the need to oversize cables, switchboards and other electrical equipment.

Implications of low Power Factor

A Revolutionary New Power Factor Control System

G.E.S GROUP - STATIC VAR GENERATOR (SVG) 03

Static Var Generator (SVG)Automatic power factor correction equipment is broadly applied in industry to ensure the electrical network is utilised to its best capacity. The usual form of such power factor correction is an automatic controller that monitors one incoming phase to a plant and switches banks of capacitors to try and maintain a target power factor.

The problems with capacitor based automatic power factor correction are vast and varied. It is slow to react to load changes so the system is constantly in a state of over compensation or under compensation. In today’s harmonic rich environments the capacitors suffer (even with harmonic blocking chokes), system resonance is a risk and the life expectancy of the system is

reduced. Contactors regularly fail and overloaded capacitors leak and present a real fire risk.

Sinexcel’s SVG is an entirely new approach to power factor correction. The SVG utilises a high speed three level inverter that reacts to changes in reactive power, injecting corrective reactive power into the system. Full correction is made in ¾ of a cycle. This rapid response provides stable accurate real-time power factor correction without the draw backs of traditional capacitor based systems. SVG can continuously adjust reactive power dynamically and bi-directionally (-1 to +1). There is little chance of system resonance and even under low voltage conditions SVG will provide full reactive power compensation.

Traditional two-level inverter circuit Innovative three -level inverter circuit

SVG Operating PrincipalSinexcel SVG checks the load current through the external CT, and performs computing through the external DSP to analyse the reactive content of the load current.

After that, it controls the PWM signal generator based on the settings to send control signals to the internal IGBT. In this way, it generates reactive compensation current to implement dynamic reactive power compensation.

The Pros and Cons

New SVG

04 G.E.S GROUP - STATIC VAR GENERATOR (SVG)

Capacitor based systems are based on“staging in” and “staging out” banks offixed capacitance. This means the amount of correction is available only in multiples of the fixed banks resulting in over and under compensation.

The SVG uses inverter technology to inject an infinitely variable amount of corrective reactive power. This ensures the power factor is always at setpoint with no over or under correction.

The complete response time of the SVG is less than 15mS and the dynamic response time is less than 50uS. This makes the SVG perfect for sites with rapidly changing power factor.

The SVG uses inverter technology so resonance is eliminated.

The SVG can correct both an inductive (lagging) or capacitive (leading) load.

The inverter technology used in the SVG is very compact and typically requires less mounting area than a conventional system.

The SVG performance is virtually unaffected by low grid voltage levels.

The SVG has low losses and needs little maintenance. The service life is expected to be greater than 10 years.

Capacitor based systems are slow to respond. The power factor controllermust be tuned to stop cycling of the“staging in” and “staging out” process. The delay is further increased by the time taken for the bank contactor to pull in.

Capacitor based systems can encounterresonance.

Conventional systems can only correct an inductive (lagging) load.

Conventional systems are manufacturedby collectively installing blocking chokes, capacitors, and switching contactorsinto an enclosure. This takes up a largeamount of switchroom real estate.

The performance of power factorcorrection capacitors is greatly impactedby the grid voltage level. Low voltage onthe grid results in poorer compensationperformance from the capacitors.

Capacitor based systems require frequent switching of the stages to achieve correction for changing power factor thus resulting in a shortened service life, in some cases as low as 3 years.

Quick Response

The system reactive power compensation can be completed immediately, right at the startup of the Sinexcel SVG.

Real-Time Tracking

Sinexcel SVG can make dynamic and real-time compensation based on the changes of system reactive current.

Ideal Compensation

Sinexcel SVG releases compensation current that has the same capacity - but an opposite phase, as system reactive current.

Reverse Overlapping

After the compensation current is reversed in its direction, the system reactive current overlaps with the reactive current released

by Sinexcel SVG.
