ICSM Muslim Medics Mock OSCE May 2010 CANDIDATE NAME STATION NUMBER CANDIDATE NUMBER Cardiovascular Complaint and ECG Examiner information: Please assess the student according to the following criteria 1 WASHES HANDS (1 mark) 2 Appropriate Introduction- own name, greeting, role, patient’s name, age and what they are going to do (all required to score) (1 mark) 3 Obtains consent (1 mark) 4 Establishes nature of leg pain (1mark) 5 Asks about previous episodes (1mark) 6 Establishes that the pain is intermittent and is relieved by sitting (both required to score) 7 Asks about associated cardiovascular symptoms: no dizziness/syncope/sweating/nausea and vomiting. (1/2 mark each, total 2 marks) 8 Establishes the pain does not radiate (1 mark) 9 Asks about associated symptoms (mild chest pain and breathless walking uphill) (1 mark each) 10 Asks about recent travel, contraceptive pill, and pregnancy (2 to score ) Asks about previous history of DVT/PE 11 Establishes cardiovascular risk factors : Diabetes, High Cholesterol 12 Asks about past medical history (1mark) 13 Asks about regular medication and allergies ( both required to score) 14 Asks about family history (1mark) 15 Adequate social history (1mark) (2 marks if asked after history of presenting complaint) 16 Adequate smoking and alcohol history (1 mark) 17 Elicits patient’s ideas, concerns and expectations and responds sensitively (1 mark) 18 Open to closed questioning 19 Presents findings in a clear manner (1 mark) 20 EXAMINER: Ask student to give a differential diagnosis = Intermittent claudication must be in differential to score INFORM THE STUDENT WHEN THERE ARE 5 MINUTES LEFT 21 Student approaches ECG in a structured manner 22 Reports name, DOB of patient and time and date of ECG (1 mark) 23 Calibration and paper speed (both required to score) 24 Rate, rhythm, Axis (1 mark each) 25 P waves 26 PR interval 27 QRS complex
