Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

We might have expected that after last Sunday’s extreme challenge to love even our enemies Jesus would moderate his demands. Not at all. He continues to interrogate our most entrenched patterns of behaviour. Today he calls into question our fundamental human need for food and shelter. “I am telling you not to worry about your life and what you are to eat, nor about your body and how you are to clothe it” This is breathtaking teaching; it threatens to subvert the very foundations of our daily existence.

Of course Jesus has something to take their place: the kingdom of God and his righteousness. To set our hearts on these is to discover a new world, a realm of unfailing abundance for all. This is the domain of the heavenly Father who knows our needs and provides for them with faithful loving kindness. As the prophet declares, the love of such a God for us is like the unbreakable bond between mother and child.

Paul and Sonia Tanham are

celebrating their 60th wedding

anniversary on the 19th August.

They came to the Holy Rosary

Parish in 1966 with four children

and two more children were born

while they lived in Woodlands. All

of their six children and seven of

their grandchildren have been

educated in Holy Rosary school,

Siena, Marist Brothers and now

Newman College. Paul and Sonia

have been part of the Holy Rosary

Parish for the past 48 years and

they have seen many changes

over the years including the

building of the church. They look

forward to many more years at

the church and in the area.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘No one can be the slave to two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or treat the first with respect and the second with scorn. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money.

‘That is why I am telling you not to worry about your life and what you are to eat, nor about your body and how you are to clothe it. Surely life means more than food, and the body more than clothing! Look at the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they are? Can any of you, for all his worrying, add one single cubit to his span of life? And why worry about clothing? Think of the flowers growing in the fields; they never have to work or spin; yet I assure you that not even Solomon in all his regalia was robed like one of these. Now if that is how God clothes the grass in the fields which is there today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, will he not much more look after you, you men of little faith? So do not worry, do not say, “What are we to eat? What are we to drink? How are we to be clothed?” It is the pagans who set their hearts on all these things. Your heavenly Father knows you need them all. Set your hearts on his kingdom first, and on his righteousness, and all these other things will be given you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow: tomorrow, will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.’

Commentary on the Gospel The Gospel today poses a question we’d rather

avoid – in what do we place our trust? Is it

material things (money, food, clothing) or is it the

God who unfailingly cares for all? Where does our

heart lie? Is our heart set on what we possess or on

the reign of God?

To live a life of the Beatitudes is not to have to

choose between God and money. We know that

God is good. And yet we know, too, that money is

not all bad. But, to live a life of the Beatitudes, is

to choose between that which is definitive and

eternal on the one hand and that which is transient,

passing and perishable on the other.

We set our hearts on the Kingdom of God. We set

our hearts on God’s righteousness. And all these

other things will be given us as well.

ENROLMENTS 2018

We will soon be finalising Kindergarten enrolments for 2018. At this stage we currently have 54 students enrolled in the programme with 6 positions available. If you have any family or friends wanting a place in the 4 Year Old Kindergarten Programme please refer them to the school office. If you have not enrolled your child or are unsure please contact Laurie Evans. Once placements have been completed it will not be possible to increase classes to accommodate children whose enrolment

application was not received.

This Parish family based program covers the sacraments of Confirmation, First Eucharist

and Reconciliation. The dates are:

Registration: Wednesday 15th March at 7:30 pm. You are required to register your child’s participation in the program by attending this session in the church. Children are not required to attend, but is essential that a parent (or both parents) attend this session.
