Oil and Gas Development in So~zth Texas during 1946
THE South Texas area discussed herein. oil; 19 produced gas or condensate and represents Districts 2 and 4 of the Texas 271 were dry holes. The number of wild- Railroad Commission. Of these discoveries, 16 pro- duced oil and rg were classified as gas or condensate fields. All the discoveries re- sulted in only relatively small fields. Detailed data pertaining to new discoveries are given in Table 2.
In addition to new fields, several impor- tant new sands and extensions were dis- covered in older fields, and are summarized in Tables 3 and 4. New producing horizons or extensions discovered a t La Gloria, North Minnie Bock, Borregas, hlidway, and the Refugio-Heard area were the more important. The greatest exploratory activ- ity during the year was along the upper Wilcox trend in the Karnes County area. However, no new reserves of importance were discovered. I n all, 1454 wells were drilled in South Texas in 1946, as compared with 1477 wells drilled during 1945. Of these, I 115 were field wells, of which 841 produced oil; 113 were gas or condensate, and 161 were dry holes. The remaining 339 were wildcats, of which 49 produced
son-Tijerina-Borregas area and Refugio fields. At the end of the year, 120 rigs were running, of which 96 were drilling in proven fields and 24 were exploratory wells.
Production in the South Texas area dur- ing 1946 amounted to ~jr,ooo,ooo bbl of oil, which may be compared with 128,000,- ooo bbl produced in 1945. Discovery of new reserves in new fields probably did not equal 1946 production. Holvever, extensions to old fields and discovery of new pay zones probably added consider- ably more new reserves to the area's total than was produced during the year. South Texas has 330 active oil fields, including the 1946 discoveries. Important statistics pertaining to oil and gas production by fields are included in Table I. More than 40 pct of the oil that was produced from this area during the year came from nine fields. Tom O'Connor produced 1g,o81,06g bbl of oil; Seeligson, 12,733,287; West Ranch, 7,088,878; Willamar, 4,690,942; East White Point, Greta, Agua Dulce, Plymouth and Stratton, over 3,000,000

gas, which heretofore has been vented in most of the fields. A greatly increased market for natural gas resulted in conser- vation of flare gas, and the connection of a large number of gas fields to large gas trans- mission lines greatly increased the produc- tion of natural gas. At the end of the year, there were 2 1 pressure-maintenance pro- jects in operation in the area.
Work was started during the year to-
wards installation of a plant to manufac- ture liquefied petroleum gases by processing natural gas a t Brownsville. Plans were also made for the construction of a natural gas transmission line to Monterrey, Mexico.
N; important changes were made in re- fining operations during the year. There are 12 refineries being operated in this area.
