DESCRIPTION

This document can be used as a flyer to inform the public about the crime of stoning in Iran and what people can do to help stop it. This flyer is for countries that host an Embassy of the Islamic Republic. US activists should look for the US version of this document. The United States does not host an Embassy of the Islamic Republic, but allows the Pakistani Embassy to give office space to the Islamic Republic regime.

STOP Stoning in Iran!

End Stoning Worldwide

In 1983, the contemporary Islamic Penal Code was

ratified by Iran’s parliament. But stoning had been practiced in Iran since 1980.

Based on the sources of our report*, at least 10 persons were stoned to death in Iran before stoning

became a part of the law as punishment for adultery.

In 2002, Iran's judiciary indicated that stoning would no longer be practiced in Iran. But since 2003, eight people have been stoned to death, and 47 people have either been

sentenced to death by stoning or the courts have upheld their stoning sentences.

In 2008, Iran's judiciary decided to scrap the punishment of stoning in draft legislation submitted to parliament for approval.

But since then, 5 people were stoned in 2008 and 2009 and 15 people have been handed stoning execution sentences.

During the presidency of Mohammad Khatami (1997-2005), the so-called “reformist” president of Islamic Republic of Iran…

…there were at least 28 people stoned to death and 36 people sentenced to death by stoning.

During the presidency of Ahmadinejad (2005-2010)… …there were 8 people stoned to death and 31 people sentenced to death by stoning.

During Khomeini’s period of rule (1980-1989)… …at least 76 people were stoned to death.

Note: These are only cases for which documented evidence exists; it is certain that actual numbers are higher.

* The report, by Farshad Hoseini, is entitled “List of known cases of death by stoning sentences in Iran (1986-2010)” and is published by the International Committee against Stoning

Please write to the Foreign Ministry and demand closure of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran

on the basis of crimes against humanity, including the 1988 mass executions of thousands of political prisoners,

and on the basis of 31 years of stoning executions, which are in contravention of Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights: “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or

punishment.”
