Childhood obesity rates have more than doubled in the past 30 years. If steps are not taken to become healthier, these children are more likely to develop other chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Healthy lifestyle habits, including healthy eating and physical activity, can lower the risk of obe-sity and developing related diseases. “CHANGE is a wonderful program for children who need help overcoming weight issues,” says Ashley Charles, YMCA Health and Wellness Programs Coordinator. “We focus on physical activity, healthy eating, and self-esteem as parts of a life-style change to be healthier. The kids have a great time and are making a huge difference in their own lives.”

The overall objective of CHANGE is not necessarily to help enrolled children to lose weight, but rather to facilitate certain lifestyle changes in regards to exer-cise and nutrition that participants will be able to take with them throughout their lives. The cost of the entire 12-week program, including all of the activities that are done, is $75. It is open to YMCA members and non-members.

To find out more about this program, contact Ashley Charles at the Goldsboro Family YMCA at (919) 778-8557 or [email protected].

INSTRUCTIONS:Preheat the oven to 400°F. Halve the squash, and scrape out and discard the seeds. Brush the inside of the squash with the oil, and sprinkle with salt and 1/8 teaspoon black pepper.

Place the squash on a baking sheet, cut sides down. Roast for 35 minutes, until soft. Remove from the oven, and scrape out the flesh with a fork. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F.

Meanwhile, in a large pot on medium-high, sauté the beef, crushed red pepper and remaining 1/8 teaspoon black pepper for 8 minutes, breaking beef apart as it cooks. Add the garlic, and sauté for 2–3 min. Add the mushrooms, and sauté for 5–7 min. Add the spinach, and cook until it starts to wilt, about 1 min. Add the pine nuts, pasta sauce, ricotta and reserved spaghetti squash; stir until well-mixed.

Transfer mixture to an 11-by-7-inch baking dish; top with Par-mesan. Cover casserole loosely with foil. Bake for 20 min, remov-ing the foil after 15 minutes. Remove from oven, and let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Help them create some amazing memories by bringing them to the Y! We offer full-day summer camps all summer long with weekly options available. All summer camp children receive a nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack, and begin June 13.

Kinder Camp (rising Kindergarteners) - Kinder Camp offers age-appropriate field trips, games, crafts with a little more quiet time.

Traditional Camp (Ages 5-12) – Traditional Summer Day Camp Program is aimed at providing a well–rounded expe-rience based on the YMCA’s mission to build healthy spirit, mind and bodies.

Outdoor Adventure Camp (Ages 9-17) - Kids learn about the outdoors and partake in adventures like backpacking, camp-ing, canoeing, hiking, navigation, and much more. Most of the day will focus on the weekly topic while also offering a healthy dose of swimming, arts and crafts, sports, and field trips.

Sports Camp (Ages 9-17) - During the summer they will learn, work at, and develop their skills in a variety of sports. Teamwork and sportsmanship is just some of the activities that will be worked on in Sports Camp.

Teen Camp (Ages 13-17) - This camp will enrich your teen and give them a sense of what it takes to run a community while having all the great experiences that Traditional Camp has to offer.
