Located in the beautiful Centennial Valley, the Frawley Ranch is a living representation of the Wild West. Six his-toric homesteads sit on the 4,750 acres, all of which were acquired by Henry Frawley throughout the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

In 1876, the gold rush brought thousands of miners to Deadwood, while also attracting businessmen. On July 4, 1877, a wagon train brought three notable men to the Black Hills: John Hunter, W.E. Adams, and Henry Fraw-ley. Hunter and Adams became successful merchants while Henry Frawley would one day be known as the best lawyer in the Dakota Territory.

Born to Irish parents who had immigrated to New York, Henry Frawley studied law at the University of Wis-consin in Eau Clair. He graduated in 1876 and began his law practice in Wisconsin. One year later, Henry was in-trigued by the rough and tumble town of Deadwood and made his move west. Upon arrival, he practiced law both independently, as well as with several business partners and his success and notoriety grew.

Henry became the resident attorney for the Burling-ton and Missouri Railroad in 1890, which built the rail line from Deadwood to Edgemont. On July 22, 1890, Henry married “the jewel of the valley,” Christina An-derson, heiress to arguably the most successful ranch in the Centennial Valley. Two years later, Henry established his own ranch in the valley and continued to purchase surrounding 160-acre homesteads.

The Frawley Ranch has been listed on the National Registry of Historic Places since 1974, and in 1977 was named a National Historic Landmark by the National Park
