• Defection from the faith

• Turning away

from God

• (Jer. 17:5-6; 2

Thess. 2:3)

• Spiritual adultery (Jer. 2:1-3;

5:7)

• A rebellion

against God

(2 Thess.

2:2-4)

The gracious help of God is pledged to all

those who continue steadfast in faith; but,

on account of man’s free will, which no

power may coerce, apostasy from God is

possible so long as we continue in the

flesh. Wherefore, constant watchfulness,

prayer, and holy living are necessary on the

part of man, lest he fall away from the grace

of God, grieve and quench the Holy Spirit,

and lose his soul at last.

hate each other.”

Warnings

• Heb. 3:12-13

• Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. 13]] You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.

• Heb. 2:

• So we must listen very

carefully to the truth we

have heard, or we may drift

away from it

Warnings

• 1 Cor. 10:11-12

• If you think you are standing

strong, be careful not to fall.

Warnings

• Jude 4• Some ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches, saying that God’s marvelous grace allows us to live immoral lives. The condemnation of such people was recorded long ago, for they have denied our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Causes of apostasy:

• Jesus didn’t meet their

expectations (John 6:66)

• Persecution (2 Tim. 4:16-17)

• Worldliness (Matt. 16:26; 2 Tim.

4:9-11)

• False Teaching (Col. 1:21-23; 1

Tim 6:3-5; 2 John 9)

Causes of apostasy:

• Never had a genuine

conversion (Luke 6:46)

• Never discipled in the faith

• Lack of faithfulness (Heb.

10:23)

Results of apostasy:

• Loss of personal faith

• Loss of assurance of salvation

• Loss of fellowship with God’s

people

• Loss of joy and hope

• Impossible to be restored to

salvation (Heb. 6)

How to prevent apostasy:

• Walk faithfully in the light of God’s

Word. (1 Jn.1:7)

– Love God supremely (Matt. 22:37)

– Love others (Matt. 22:39)

– Seek growth as a believer (1 Pet. 2:2)

– Attend worship/ study/ fellowship

– Strive to resist temptation and sin

(Rom.6:1-2)

• Abide in the doctrine of Christ (2

Jn 1:9)

What to do when you sin:

• Repent (Acts 8:22)

• Confess your sin (1 John 1:9)

• Pray for forgiveness (1 Jn 2:1)

(1 Jn. 5:13)

“I have written this to you who

believe in the name of the Son of

God, so that you may know you

have eternal life.”

“But we are not like those who turn away from God to their own destruction. We are the faithful

ones, whose souls will be saved.” (Heb. 10:39)
