Warm Up:

Analyze (break down) how an author creates a character in a novel.

Page 2: STEAL Characters

Characterization is the way a writer reveals a character.

To create a “round” character, authors must develop a character in several ways.

Five different ways a character is revealed. Together, they spell the acronym STEAL:SpeechThoughts and EmotionsEffects on OthersActionsLooks

Page 3: STEAL Characters

Speech: What does the character say? How does the character speak?

Thoughts/Emotions: What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts? How does the character feel about things?

Effect on Others: How does the character cause others to react?

Actions: What does the character do? How does the character behave?

Looks: What does the character look like? How does the character dress?

Read Sundiata again looking for examples of STEAL in another character: Sundiata, Sassouma, Balla Fasseke, Sogolon

Complete the graphic organizer using the parts of the text you identified as STEAL.

For the inside wheel, identify specific parts of the story that will support that part of STEAL.

For the outside wheel, explain how each part of the story reveals the character.

Page 6: STEAL Characters

On a sheet of paper in your WRITING tab, create another STEAL wheel.

Begin creating your own character with character, and write about him/her in each part of the STEAL wheel.

Keep in mind this will be the character you use for your Narrative Task!
