明治5年(1872)新橋-横浜間の鉄道が開通。現在の田町-品川間に当たる区間は用地取得が叶わず、海上に築いた堤防に線路を通していました。漁船の通行のための門が設けられています。　

In 1872, a railroad opened between Shimbashi and Yokohama. In the area between what is now Tamachi and Shinagawa, the tracks ran along an embankment built into the sea.

江戸城外堀として、また上水源として利用されていた赤坂溜池は、風光明媚な名所として知られていました。溜池の南岸には、土手を補強するために桐の木が植えられ、「桐畑」と呼ばれていました。

The Akasaka reservoir was used as the outer moat of Edo Castle and as a water source. Paulownia trees (kiri ) were plant-ed along the southern bank, leading to the name kiribatake, field of paulownias.

標高25.7ｍの愛宕山。徳川家康の命で祀られた愛宕神社が山頂にあり、当時はそこから街並みや江戸湾を一望できました。茶店もあり、人気の景勝地でした。

Eight Views of Edo:Returning Sails at Shibaura Bay

新橋から南、田町あたりまでの海浜は芝浦と呼ばれ、さかんに漁が行われていました。たくさんの船が行き交う様子が描かれています。

The beach south from Shimbashi going as far as the Tamachi area was called Shi-baura and was popular for fishing.
