Chilling Out

First Time's the Charm

Going to Great Copper Lengths Fishing with Flex-Hose

F.W. Webb recently delivered 21,000 feet of copper tubing (almost two miles of it!) to Kinetics for a project at a biotechnology firm in Massachusetts. The tubing was sold through the F.W. Webb South Portland, ME location for fabrication at the Kinetics location in Scarborough, ME. Kinetics is a global contractor specializing in the design and installation of process, mechanical, plumbing and HVAC systems.

Flex-Hose Co. treated a group of F.W. Webb associates to a weekend of food and fishing in Alexandria Bay in northern NY, as a way of thanking Webb for being a valued distributor for more than 25 years.“F.W. Webb people are the best in the industry,” said Philip Argersinger, president and owner of Flex-Hose Co., Inc. “Over the years, we have had the honor to work with Webb with a common goal of exceeding customer expectations.”For the record – and bragging rights, Alan Gabris, Operations Manager of the F.W. Webb Waterbury, CT location, caught the biggest fish, a walleye.

The F.W. Webb Lebanon, NH location is supplying closed-circuit cooling towers and NIRON PP-RCT piping to ARC Mechanical for installation at a software company. The durable NIRON pipe connects the cooling towers to a chilled water system. Since the company needs continuous cooling, specialty hose from the Webb Industrial PVF Specialties Division was attached to the new system temporarily, while old underground piping was removed to facilitate the NIRON installation. Also involved at the get-go was the F.W. Webb Alliance Environmental Group, which sent in a team to remove 450 gallons of toxic corrosive old antifreeze from the system being replaced. Relying heavily on a critical mass of computing power, the end user develops sophisticated engineering simulation software and needs a reliable cooling system to keep their massive server room properly cooled.

North Shore Mechanical Contractors (NSMC) impressed their customer, a large health services provider based in Massachusetts, by completing a domestic water main relocation project in less than half the estimated time. How did they accomplish this? Simple. NSMC used 6” NIRON Clima pipe and fittings and the electro-fusion joining method.

“We delivered 500 feet of NIRON pipe and associated fittings to the job site and, with a crew of just two plumbers, NSMC was able to install 400 feet in just one day,” said Mike Lyons, F.W. Webb Account Manager and thermoplastic piping specialist. “NSMC was amazed by the ease and speed of installation, and it also thrilled their customer.”

Even more impressive, NSMC was installing the NIRON PP-RCT pipe and fittings system for the first time. NSMC decided to try it based on three criteria of key importance to them: material and labor cost savings, plus NIRON’s Massachusetts certification for “potable water.”

Also making the decision easy and the project run smoothly for NSMC was the free on-the-jobsite training they received from F.W. Webb, which covered product handling, pipe cutting, and joining methods.

Based on their positive experience with the NIRON piping system, NSMC has used it again since and plans to continue using it in the future.

Flex-A-Seal and F.W. Webb Engineer Timely Customer SolutionWhen your shaft seal has failed and you need an engineered solution to correct it, F.W. Webb and Flex-A-Seal are the team to call. The following is a recap of a customer’s situation and positive outcome when Webb and Flex-A-Seal teamed up to help.

Customer: New England based Contract Manufacturer Market: Industrial/BioPharmaEquipment: Glass-lined reactorShaft seal size: 100mm diameterProblem: Reactor seal leak halted production at a cost of $100k/month

Situation: The customer contacted their OEM seals provider and learned the leak repair would take 10 weeks. Having read in the WINSheet that the F.W. Webb Commercial & Industrial Pump Division represents the Flex-A-Seal line of mechanical seals, the customer called Webb for assistance. Relief: The customer was happy to learn that a locally based Flex-A-Seal OEM manufacturer in Vermont was closer than their OEM Seal manufacturer. FLEX-PRO PERISTALTIC PUMP – MODEL A2

FLEX-PRO PERISTALTIC PUMP – MODEL A3

FLEX-PRO PERISTALTIC PUMP – MODEL A4 (HEAVY DUTY)

Custom Skids

F.W. Webb now offers precise metering of chemicals for the most demanding applications including off gassing chemicals and chemicals with solids with Blue White’s A2, A3 and A4 Industrial series peristaltic metering pumps.

FLEX-PRO® peristaltic pumps from Blue-White have smooth, quiet pumping action and deliver accurate amounts of chemical to your system. Three Flex-Pro models are offered featuring a broad range of output rates, electronics options and features. Pump outputs range from 0.001 – 158.00 GPH and pressures from 0-125 PSI and priming capabilities of up to 30 ft.

Model A2 is the most compact of the FLEX-PRO peristaltic line of metering pumps. Don't let the compact size mislead you, the A2 is capable of handling the aggressive, high viscosity fluid used in the treatment of water and waste water. This is an excellent alternative to Solenoid pumps because peristaltic pumps provide more gentle and efficient pumping action. There are no costly rebuild kits required, ever. The A2's frame is ruggedly built and feature-packed, it includes easily accessible advanced electronics, a variable speed DC motor and exclusive FLEX-PRO features, such as patented built-in Tube Failure Detection.

The combined features and capabilities of the FLEX-PRO A2 make it an excellent metering pump choice in several applications. The need to purchase several different pumps to service the one installation is often eliminated by choosing this model.

The FLEX-PRO Model A3 is designed to handle the demands of mid-range to large volume water and wastewater treatment applications, as well as many other applications where precision chemical feed is sought.

The A3 has a broad range of feed rates, a 2500:1 turndown ratio, and is capable of injecting a comprehensive spectrum of chemicals. Combined with exceptional over-molded pump tubes and advanced electronics, the A3 can be finely tuned for a custom fit in a number of processes, and for use

in multiple applications at a single facility. Peristaltic technology ensures smooth, quiet, low-velocity and eco-friendly pumping action, and the A3’s rugged design ensures it will handle the demanding requirements of industrial use.

The FLEX-PRO Model A4 combines technology and features that high-output-demand water and wastewater treatment systems require, while maintaining an operator-friendly design for ease of use. The A4 can meter up to 158 GPH / 10,000 ML/Min of chemical while retaining the smooth, quiet and eco-friendly pumping action for which these pumps are known. The two CNC precision-machined squeeze rollers and two alignment rollers, provide optimum squeeze, and combine with the heavy duty single piece plastic rotor to provide unparalleled accuracy and long tube life.

When your installation calls for high volume chemical output combined with the latest design and engineering features, choose FLEX-PRO A4.

If you don’t see the FLEX-PRO pump that meets your system requirements, please contact the F.W. Webb Thermoplastic Piping Division at 800-378-1500. We can design and build a customized system for you today.

BALL VALVE LABELING FROM GEORG FISCHER

SIGNET 2751 DRYLOC® PH/ORP SMART SENSOR ELECTRONICS

The Simple Way to Identify Your Ball Valves Individually

Identify the ball valves in your piping systems clear and easy with the GF Ball Valve Labeling. Whether to comply with standards or for more clarity - you decide how to label your ball valves. Order the appropriate lever clip and print sheets now.

GF Piping Systems has added a new measurement solution to its already extensive analytical instrumentation product line with the new Signet 2751 DryLoc® pH/ORP Smart Sensor Electronics. The 2751 offers increased accuracy for pH/ORP monitoring and control by alerting users to probe health, including needed maintenance, glass impedance and broken glass detection. Suitable applications include water and wastewater recycling, neutralization systems, scrubbers, effluent monitoring, pool and spa, and aquatic animal life support systems.

When used with either the Signet 9900 Transmitter (Gen IV), 9950 Dual Channel Transmitter, or Signet 0486 Profibus Concentrator, the 2751 virtually eliminates inaccurate pH/ORP readings by automatically monitoring electrode condition and generating an alert to potential problems before they become serious.

“Automatic alert capability is a huge benefit in preventing costly problems before they occur, while at the same time reducing maintenance costs and optimizing pH/ORP monitoring accuracy,” says Dave Vollaire, GF Piping Systems Instrumentation Product Manager.

In addition to its powerful automatic health monitoring function, the 2751 features remote calibration using GF’s 9900 battery-operated pH calibrator, 9900 or 9950 Transmitters. With remote calibration, the user can quickly and easily unplug an aged/dirty electrode in the process line and replace it with a clean, pre-calibrated electrode from the lab. Remote calibration allows the necessary time for electrode inspection, cleaning and conditioning in a controlled environment rather than in the field, reducing both system downtime and employee time in the field. Field-free calibration also minimizes electrode exposure at the point of installation, thereby maximizing electrode sensitivity, response time, accuracy and service life.

Other outstanding performance features include pH measurement ranges of -1 to 15 and ORP ranges of -1999 to +1999 millivolts.

Piping and fabrication for water, sewage and drainage.

The F.W. Webb Water Works Division is your one-stop provider for water works pipe, valves, fittings, supplies, and fabrication services. If your needs include below-ground installation, construction, maintenance and repair of water mains, sewer lines, water processing facilities, waste treatment plants, and pumping stations, F.W. Webb has the wide-ranging product lines you need.

In ample inventory and ready for delivery throughout the Northeast, we stock:

• Cast iron• Copper tubing• Ductile iron• PVC

Sizes range from ½" to 48", depending on the application and type of pipe required.

Emergency Service

When a water main leak or processing plant malfunction occurs, call us for emergency service. We’ll provide you or your contractor the products you need pronto, even after hours – 24/7/365.

Fabrication

F.W. Webb operates the only UL-classified fabrication shop for flanged ductile iron pipe in the region. One of the shop’s most sought-after services is the accurate retrofitting of old, oversized flange pipe with new pipe and fittings, regardless of size.

One-Stop for Water WorksF.W. Webb water works products and fabrication services are available to municipal professionals, civil engineers, and water and sewer contractors throughout New York and all six New England states. If you service, install and repair water mains, sewer lines, fire hydrants, pumping stations, and water/waste processing and treatment plants in any of these seven states, contact F.W. Webb for ready-to-deliver inventory and 24/7 emergency needs.

Our wide variety of quality products includes underground and flanged PVF, in sizes up to 48”, and our UL-certified fabrication machine shop is unequaled in the region. Look for F.W. Webb to expand its availability of water works products into New Jersey and Pennsylvania in the near future.

F.W. Webb water works products includes hydrants. The one pictured is from M&H and was purchased from F.W. Webb by the town of Kensington, CT. Hydrants, or “fireplugs,” do not have to be serviced or replaced frequently – unless they are struck by a moving vehicle, which unfortunately does happen regularly. For that reason, most cities and towns keep extra hydrants on hand. Or they can call F.W. Webb for 24/7 emergency service and immediate access to hydrants and other water works products.

Ever wonder why hydrants are called “fireplugs?” In the early 1800s, water mains were made from wood. To access water to put out a fire, firefighters had to dig to the main and chop a hole in it to connect their hoses. After the fire was extinguished, they would seal the hole with a "fire plug."

Reduce your energy consumption and costs with Armstrong Flo-Direct Gas-FiredWater Heaters—the most energy efficient method of hot water production on themarket today. By generating hot water instantaneously, Flo-Direct Gas-Fired WaterHeaters eliminate the wasteful step of producing steam in order to produce hot water. Armstrong is a global leader in hot water system design, operation and maintenance, so we understand the complexities of switching from steam-based hot water generation to Flo-Direct. Our experts will provide you with all the engineering support needed to ensure a smooth de-steaming process and turnkey installation.

Flo-Direct Gas-Fired Water Heaters maintain 99.7% Higher Heat Value (HHV)efficiency throughout every phase of operation. They consume no fuel during warm-up or when idle, nor do they lose any energy through steam conversion. Water comes in contact with heat from combustion more than once, ensuring that virtually all of the heat and energy generated during combustion is captured by the water.

Simple in design and operation, Flo-Direct water heaters are constructed of all stainless steel with no internal moving parts and their compact size requires only minimal floor space. They are ideal for a broad range of hot water applications:

• Fast return on investment• Fuel savings as high as 30-60% when compared to steam systems• Heats water on demand• Same efficiency at all demands• Improved CO2 emissions• Lower maintenance• No insurance inspections required• No specialist staff required• Resistant to scaling• Drinking water compliant• No water treatment required• 10-year warranty on body and internal components• Two-year warranty on all other components

The service technicians of the F.W. Webb Process Controls Division (PCD) are devoted to keeping your facility and operations up and running at maximum capacity. On a typical day, a PCD technical expert can be found working in a variety of industrial settings throughout New England and New York, or in the PCD workshop in Winslow, ME, repairing, recalibrating, testing, and building engineered products and assemblies. F.W. Webb is your reliable partner for emergency service, onsite and offsite repairs, calibration services, and regular maintenance. Visit fwwebb.com or email [email protected].
