S.No Types of Steel Image Description Application
1.Thermo
mechanically treated bar (TMT bars)
Sudden quenching of red hot steel bars by a spray of water can produce steel bars with high strength at the surface
with a core of mild steel.
2. Round barsThese are available in circular
cross-section with diameter varying from 5 mm to 250 mm.
Used in concrete structure and grill work.
3. Cold twisted deformed bars
These bars are first hot rolled out of high grade mild steel.
After cooling, they are twisted. The steel is strained beyond
the elastic limit and then released.

4. Ribbed mild steel bars
These are hot rolled steel bars but during rolling ribs are produced on it. These ribs
increase strength of bars. They look like high strength ribbed bar. These bars should not be
used in R.C.C. work.
5. Welded wire fabric
These are fabricated from a series of wires arranged at
right angle to each other and electrically welded at all
intersections.Used for floor slab.
6. Flat bars
These are available in suitable width varying from 10 mm to
400 mm. with thickness varying from 3 mm to 40 mm.
Used in grill work of window and door.

7. Square barThese are available in square
cross-section with sides varying from 5 mm to 250 mm.
Used in grillwork of windows and gates.
8. Corrugated sheets
These are produced by passing steel sheets through grooves. These grooves bend and press the sheets and corrugations are formed. These sheets are galvanized so also known as
G.I. sheets.
Used for roof covering.
9. Expanded metal
This form of steel is available in different size and shape. It is prepared from the sheets of
mild steel. A diamond mesh appearance is thus formed
throughout the whole area of sheet.
Used as lathing material and for partition.

10. I-section
These are popularly known as the rolled steel joists or beams.
It consist of two flanges connected with a web. These are economical in material.
11. Angle sectionIt may have equal or unequal
leg. They are available in variable size and their weight depends
on per meter length.
Used in structural steel work.
12. Channel section
It consists of web with two flanges. A channel section is designated by the height of
web and width of flange. The BIS has classified it as
junior channel, light channel and medium channel.
Used as the structural member of the steel
frame.
13. T-sectionThe shape of this section is like letter ‘T’ and consists of web
and flange. It is designated by overall dimension and
thickness.Used as member of steel truss and to form built up
section.

14. PlatesThe plate section of beam are
available in different sizes with thickness varying from 5 mm
to 50 mm.Use as tensional
member of steel roof truss.
