Steel Solutions for Packaging Driven by ambition
Flat Carbon Europe
2
Our ambition is to inject added value for all customers in the packaging industry. This is a healthy basis for the future of steel packaging.
3
Driven by ambitionFor years, ArcelorMittal has been at the forefront of the packaging market.
And it is our intent to keep it that way. To maintain its position as the undis-puted leader in the global steel market, ArcelorMittal Flat Carbon Europe (FCE) is driven by an ambition to lead and a thirst for innovation. ArcelorMittal stands at the threshold of delivering the steel of tomorrow, today.
Strengthening the global value chain.
ArcelorMittal FCE knows its role as an essential actor in the packaging industry’s value chain. Although we are a long way from the can that is lifted off a store shelf, the commercial, technical, legal and environmental aspects of the steel packaging industry are in our DNA and we are able to efficiently collaborate with all the players involved.

ArcelorMittal FCE A complementary industrial network
To respond to the overall demand for steel for packaging we have developed a number of service centres – reinforcing the proximity to our customers – already operating in Canossa (italy), barcelona (Spain), gemlik (Turkey), odessa (Ukraine) and more recently Avellino (italy). These service centres – all strategically located – fully comply with regional canmaking operations to help reduce delivery times, implement just-in-time inventory management practices and lower the overall storage costs for our customers. just another example of how ArcelorMittal leads the way.
As a leader in steel production for beverage, food, decorative, aerosol and industrial cans, along with easy open ends and caps, ArcelorMittal FCE has production of over 1.6 million tonnes of steel for packaging in Europe, accomplished in 5 production sites, supported by 5 service centres and a global r&D centre. our collective
know-how and enthusiastic spirit for pushing the bar gives us the strategic advantage of being better able to respond to market expectations. All of our steel for packaging production plants are certified iSo 9001.

A thirst for innovationIn today’s competitive market, innovation is no longer an option – it is simply a must
For us, innovation means discovering new solutions that give our customers the competitive edge. innovation is our answer to the competitiveness of such materials as glass, aluminium, plastics and composites. The continuous improvement of our steel performances is the key issue for the future of our material.
At ArcelorMittal, this means:› reducing the weight through
significant down gauging actions› increasing the formability
of steel, to enable the production of appealingly shaped cans› Complying with ever more stringent
environmental regulations
7
Research and development Our key to the future
innovation is one of our top priorities and we work in close partnership with customers, the can makers, helping them integrate their requirements throughout the supply chain. our service offers are constantly adapted to meet the ever-changing needs of our customers, allowing them to better serve their own clients. We benefit from the extensive resources of the ArcelorMittal group, including its dedicated r&D centre for packaging, giving us the means to promote innovative solutions across the packaging market.
R&D is at the heart of ArcelorMittal’s innovation strategy

Continuous improvements in our processes aimed at energy consumption reduction, increased steel recycling and growing material efficiency have resulted in a significant decrease in the Co2 impact of our steel products.ArcelorMittal has a robust record in Co2 reduction. over the past 30 years we have reduced our carbon footprint in Europe by more than 50%. We set the trend for developing tools capable of identifying, in a comparative way, each individual plant’s carbon footprint – giving us the ability to detect and target additional improvements. We continue to work with the World Steel Association to develop a sector approach to Co2 monitoring and reduction, which is to be supported by all major steel producing countries. When implemented, this approach will access actual reduction potential using a reliable measurement of current Co2 emissions and performance analysis.
Sustainability This isn’t ‘green washing’, this is ArcelorMittal
ArcelorMittal takes its responsibility for the environment seriously. it starts with awareness and is followed by a company-wide determination to lower our collective carbon dioxide (Co2) emissions level.
It’s not only steel business. It’s green business.

The higher the recycling rate, the lower the co2 emissions
Co2 emissions index recycling rate (%)
Source: apealWith steel, natural resources are saved for future generations and total energy use and Co2 emissions are significantly reduced. in fact, each item of recycled steel packaging saves one and a half times its weight in Co2. in other words, the more steel is recycled, the greater the reduction in Co2 emissions. in 2008 alone, recycling of steel packaging in Europe prevented as much as 3.9 million tonnes of Co2 emissions from being released into the environment.recycling is almost second nature for steel. Thanks to its magnetic properties, steel packaging is the easiest and most economical type of packaging to sort and recover for recycling. Since 2008, over 70% of steel packaging has been recycled in Europe, with strong growth recorded across the continent. That amounts to over
its unlimited lifespan and the potential for perpetual recyclability without detriment to its mechanical properties places the sustainability advantage firmly in the hands of steel.
regardless of how many times it is recycled, steel loses none of its strength or inherent properties. The reuse and recycling cycle of steel is a never-ending process.
