Steinway Recital
Introduction:
On the 7thof Friday at 1:10pm, Bernadette Harvey performed the concert
Steinway Recital at the Elder Hall. The program was built around fairly
modern piano works, ranging from pieces written by Nicholas Medtner,
to pieces written by Carl Vine.
Program:
The concert began with Sonata
Reminiscenza, written by NicholasMedtner. The piece was played stylistically with Bernadette doing a
brilliant job at brining out the flowing melody. This made a fine choice to
begin the concert with.
Then moving from Russia to Australia, Carl VinesAnne Landa Preludes1-4 were performed. The first prelude began full of boisterous energy,
with effective use of dynamics. The second one was a good contrast to
the first, with a slower tempo and accented articulation. Prelude 3 was
kept well under control with each semiquaver run being played withprecision and clarity. The final prelude was a terrific one to finish up with.
Appropriately named Thumper, Bernadette managed to keep excellent
control between both hands when the piece became loud and lively.
The concert then moved to two hymns written by Franz Liszt named
Hymme de la Nuit and Hymne du Matin. Hymme de la Nuit was played
beautifully, with Bernadette showing off her lovely touch that she had
while at the same time being able to play passages of fortissimo without
losing control.Hymne du Matin was played with a lot of emotion and full
of life, giving off a powerful performance.
To conclude the concert for the evening Kevin Puts Alternating Current
was performed. This final work was exhilarating and compelling to say
the least. Bernadette bought over all her technical capabilities into this
piece with a range of contrasting dynamics, articulation and styles.Melodically and rhythmically, she played with fluency and the
overbalance was perfect.

Conclusion:
The choice and order of the program was well chosen and thought over.
Because of the high level of technical skill performed throughout the
concert, the audience was able to stay engaged throughout theperformance.Overall, this was a first-class concert that would satisfy a variety of
people.
