LOCATIONBack Campus is the University of Toronto in Downtown Toronto. It is surrounded by Robarts Library, Hart House, Soldier Tower and other important buildings in the university. The site was designed to be a popular sports field on campus.

INVENTORYIn Back Campus, circulation is not convenient; communication between buildings around this site is ineffective. Except the sports field, people seldom gather onto this place. Therefore, the concept of this design is communication. Effective communication is important on campus. But in Back Campus, not much communication happened.

ANALYSISThe analysis is conducted on the using condition of this site, including the density of use, the flowing movement and the staying activities by four kinds of people (students, faculty&staff, residents and visitors), and their density in different time in one day, and what they do here, and what they may want to do.

There are four required activities required in the design. Their proposed individual programs have some programs in common so that they could share some infrastructures. Combine these single activities together through joining infrastructure also can enable people communicate better in different program. After thinking about the function, I bring my concept to the form of design. There are three ways of communicating: turn taking, interaction and overlap. I abstract them to develop my section and plan.

SITEThe Min River (闽江) is a 577 kilometre-long river in Fujian province, People’s Republic of China. It is the largest river in Fujian, and an important water transport channel. Most of the northern and central Fujian is within its watershed. The lower Min River goes through the provincial capital, Fuzhou, with whose historic center be-ing on the northern side of the river. On the southern side of the river is Fuzhou’s suburb Changle, which is even closer to its fall into the Taiwan Strait; the location historically made it an important port.

NORTH TRIBUTARYNarrow and deep, used for navigation. At flood seasons, 30% of water from upper reaches goes through north tributary. At dry seasons, 70% goes here.

SOUTH TRIBUTARYWide and shallow, used for flood emis-sion. At dry seasons, 70% of water from upper reaches goes through north tribu-tary. At dry seasons, 30% goes here

CONCEPET

This area is almost forgotten by the flourishing city, Beijing. But the earliest railway line and one of its stations lies here, dilapidated and unknown by most citizens.

The concept is to keep the historical texture in the site. The basic element comes from the train and the railway line. The main transport line follows the previous railway here, and stretch as it. While a row of constructions happen to be the abstracting train.

Infuse business element to make this area more active and attractive. Divide this area into two layers to keep one functional zone from interfering with another.

COMMERCIAL ROW

Access in two layers (ground level and underground pedestrian street) bring more activities to the commercial. Height division also keeps the two layers from interfering with each other.

LOCATIONRiverdale Park situates along the Don River in the city of Toronto, but hardly connects to it. The surrounding neighborhoods, including Cabbagetown, Regent Park, Riverdale. The river separates the city, making the east and the west unconnected, as well as the park. To connect the neiborhoods, downtown in the two sides of the Don, Riverdale Park can be an important intersection in this area, to provide a green space in people’s movement between two sides.

CONCEPTThe program regards “Connection” as a core design concept----the connection to the river, the connection to the community and the connection to the city, in order to bring more popularity and diversity, bring more activities to this site. Transformation including water connection, infrastructure connection and view connection, makes the park more like a whole and serve as an important intersection in this area.

Focus on the spacial quality of the park. Use different ways to present the different feelings provided by the two kinds of trees in the site.

PHASE MODELS OF SHERBOURNE COMMON

This changable & playable model focuses on the development of the Sherbourne Common. From the three basic elements of design-- lawn, trees and water to a park with small tree( what it looks like now), finally to the expected spacial quality the designer want it to be( maybe ten years later).
