Die Voorsitster, Ida Potgieter, verwelkom 16 lede, by name Robert Harm, Siv Borgin, Leon Smith, Elliott Smith, Pieter Jolie, Wim van Zyl, Piet Maritz, Thys Malan, Wilhelm Verwoerd, Laurette van Tonder, Niel Matthee, Günter Wossler, Claude Matthey, Tewis Britz en David Wolpe. Kraai van Niewkerk word as gas verwelkom, ʼn status wat hy gedurende die aand verander deur as lid aan te sluit. Verskoning word aangeteken vir Malcolm Suttill, Marlies Stephan, Kallie Buys, Anton Putter, Hugh Mulder, Guy Morris, Henk Geertsema en Alberto Capri. Lief en Leed. The Secretary reports that Malcolm Suttill will go into hospital on 4 May for a small procedure, and that Marlies Stephan is nursing him. Anton Putter is in hospital for a biopsy. Inskrywing vir BOFEX 2016. Die Sekretaris rapporteer dat hy versoek is om meer inskrywings vir hierdie virtuele een-raam uitstalling te lok. Dit soort uitstalling is ʼn eerste in die wêreld, en belangstelling van oor die wêreld is ontvang. Daar is selfs ʼn verslag versoek deur die President van FIP. Tot op datum is 40% van die uitstallings vanuit die buiteland ontvang, en meer uitstallings word vanaf ons lede versoek. Vir die doel is die sluitingsdatum vertraag. Plaaslike inskandering sal deur Wobbe Vegter en die Sekretaris gedoen word om kwaliteitsbeheer toe te pas.

Klubsake.

InterKlub. Soos reeds besluit sal MSu en EB ons verteenwoordig, en dat HG as klubbeoordelaar sal optree. Steven Gardiner word aanbeveel as hoofbeoordelaar, en die Sekretaris sal sy bereidwilligheid vasstel. AP reël die verversings vir die aand, terwyl LS en ES as vloerbestuurders sal optree. Die Sekretaris sal hierdie maand die uitnodigings aan die ander klubs uitstuur.

Jaarafsluiting. Die besluit om die jaarafsluiting in ʼn restourant te reël word bevestig. LS en ES onderneem om dit te reël.

Klubveiling. DW sal as veilingmeester optree, en materiaal vanaf die lede word nou ingewag. Die materiaal kan aan die Sekretaris gegee word, wat daarna sal omsien.

Nasionale Seëldag sal op 8 Okt 2016 by die Soneike Winkelsentrum gevier word. Die lede besluit dat 30 gedienste koeverte bestel moet word, sowel as ʼn aantal ʼn aantal aanplakbiljette.Die aanplakbiljette moet die plek aandui waar dit gehou sal word. Lede word versoek om hierdie gebeurtenis te ondersteun.

Show, Tell and Ask

RH shows how attempts to halt re-use of stamps is being thwarted. Letter T

SB shows a letter from Tanzania, postmarked in Dar es Salaam franked with stamps to the value of 10 shilling 40. She also shows a letter from Malawi with Tanzania stamps, but is this case the tariff is 12 shilling 40;

PM shows an interesting item, which incidentally also is a piece of history, of a Nederlandse Taalmonument. This is history as the Dutch rarely take the trouble to celebrate their language;

IP had fun with the letter T, using a variety of words starting with Tri each illustrated with a stamp; and

LVT shows a number of items showing Tabs for DISA 79.

Verversings. Na afhandeling van die klubsake geniet die lede ʼn glas wyn en geniet versnaperings. Hoofitem. Soos per ons program is dit Wim van Zyl se aand, en hy stal die bekende Penny Red uit. Hy begin sy verduideliking deur ʼn kort geskiedenis van seëls vanaf 1680 te skets. In hierdie tyd het edelmanne elk hulle eie seëls gehad, asook die koetse om pos af te lewer. In wese was dit hul eie posdiens. Sir Rowland Hill wou orde in hierdie wanorde skep deur met iets nuuts te skep, en die oorspronklike Penny Black het daar sy oorsprong. Die Penny red het kort daarop gevolg. Hierdie eerste seëls is op ʼn plat plaat gedruk, wat dan ook die praktyk van plaatnommers geskep het. Dit het gou duidelik geword dat daar probleme met die kleur van die Penny Red was (daar is baie kleur variasies), maar ook met die stempel se kleur wat van rooi na swart verander moes word. Die Penny Stars is baie moeilik om te plaat. Dit was ʼn baie genoeglike aand vir die lede. Afsluiting. Die vergadering word om 21:00 gesluit verklaar.

FACTS AND FEATS: THE POSTAL SERVICES The date stamp with the shortest name in the United Kingdom is that used at Ae near Dumfries, Scotland, the only

two-letter place-name with a post office. Other two-letter postal names are: Au (Austria, Germany and Switzerland); Ba (Fiji, Ghana); Go, Ko and Oi (Japan, Oi at least 8 post offices); Ii (Finland); Is and Ut (Russia); Li (Norway, Thailand); Lo (Belgium); Lu (Switzerland); Mo and Na (Norway); Ro (Denmark, Italy and Sweden); Sa (Portugal, Thailand); Va (Norway, Sweden); Ye (Burma) and Yi (Uruguay). In addition, four American

post offices have two initials or numerals for a name: A1 (Ohio), O.K. and U.Z. (Kentucky), T.B. (Maryland), but all are now closed. Two one-letter names are both in Norway, but since they have the same name they invariably include the name of the districts to avoid confusion: Ǻ in Ǻfjord and Ǻ in Lofoten. Postmarks featured prominently in a murder trial. Collectors still name the experimental duplex stamps used in

Glasgow, 1856-7 after Madeleine Smith, who stood trial for the murder of her lover, Emile l’Angelier. The prosecution based their approach on a series of letters from miss Smith to l’Angelier. As the letters were undated the postmarks on the wrappers were of crucial importance. The fact that the prosecution failed was due in no small measure to the fact that the standard of postmarking was erratic, a fact commented on adversely by the judge in his summary. The postmark was only used for a short while,

and had in fact been withdrawn before the trial. The extremely rare experimental type which immediately preceded this postmark, is known as the pre-Madeleine Smith postmark. Postmarks were used in a murder hunt in England in 1979-80. During the massive police hunt for the infamous Yorkshire Ripper, responsible for the murder and mutilation of a number of young women in Yorkshire and NE England, a slogan without a town die was used on mail. The West-Yorkshire Constabulary hit upon the slogan as a method of getting across the message that they needed to co-operation of the populace, but rejected the conventional method as too expensive. It is very unlikely to be used again, since it failed to achieve the desired result. The Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, was ultimately caught in routine fashion by two patrolling policemen. Pre-cancellation was first employed on 1 Oct 1870 by The Times, one of the newspapers in Britain to have continued using newspaper tax stamps after this tax on knowledge was repealed in 1855. Thereafter these stamps, printed in black on the upper right-hand corner of the front page, served to denote postage on copies transmitted by post. All stamp duties on newspapers were abolished on 1 Oct 1870 and, at the same time, the ancient privilege of transmission and retransmission which had permitted a newspaper to be sent through the post several times, was withdrawn. As these stamps now needed to be cancelled, the Post Office allowed The Times to do the cancelling direct, as part of the printing process. The pre-cancel took the form of an upright oval obliterator with the numerals 70, indicating the office of despatch. SUPERLATIVES ON STAMPS The largest masonry domed church in the world is depicted on this stamp from Italy issued in 1950. The church can be found in Florence, Italy, and is known as Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flowers). Construction of the church began in 1296 in the gothic style with the design of Arnolfo di Cambio, and was completed structurally with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunellischi. The materials used marble and brick. The dome is 114,5 m high. Editor’s note – I had the privilege to walk/climb to the top of the dome during a visit, in spite of suffering from vertigo. The Church probably is more beautiful than St Peter’s Cathedral in Rome, which I also have visited. The largest amphitheatre in the Africa is the Amphitheatre of El Jem in Tunisia. It is an outstanding witness to Roman

architecture of this monument for spectator events in Africa. It is built entirely of stone blocks, is free-standing without foundation. It has an axis varying between 122 en 148 m, and can seat an estimated 35 000 spectators, making it also one of the largest in the world. It was built around 238 AD, the monument has conserved most of the supporting infrastructure for the tiered seating. It is also testament of the prosperity of the small city of Thysdrus (now El Jem)

TROTS OP JOU EIE VERSAMELING? As klublede is ons almal versamelaars van goeters wat met posseëls, posaflewering en poskantore te doen het. Ek is seker dat elkeen baie tyd hieraan bestee, en dat meeste van julle reeds heelwat geld daaraan spandeer het. In die tyd het julle heelwaarskynlik ook enkele of meer besondere seëls, posstukke of informasie bymekaar gemaak. Hoe dit bymekaar gemaak is, is waarskynlik ʼn verhaal op sigself. Elke keer as ons ʼn besoeker ontvang, dan deel hy/sy graag die verhaal agter die verhaal agter die puik versameling wat ons onder oë ky. Maar nie almal van ons is uitstallers nie, en nie almal praat altyd so maklik vir ʼn gehoor (groot of klein). Om die rede het ons al ʼn jaar of wat gelede begin om ons lede te nooi om hulle versamelings en die verhale daaragter met ons lede tydens klubaande te deel. Die soort van reaksie bly steeds wie sal nou in my versameling(s) belang stel? Die wat reeds hierdie geleentheid gehad het, vind baie gou uit dat meer lede as verwag belang stel, en dat daar ook materiaal tot beskikking van ʼn versamelaar gestel word. Die lede wat deel van die gehoor was het ook baie geleer, al is dit miskien nie hulle versamelveld nie. Hierdie proses help ook om die sosialisering binne die klub te verbeter. Versamelings kan op verskillende manier vertoon word, die bladsy of rame self, of in ʼn voorraadboek (hoewel dit beperkend is) of dit loon om ʼn kort aanbieding op PowerPoint te doen. Hier is dit nie belangrik hoe goed die kwaliteit van die aanbieding is nie, maar wel dat so veel moontlik materiaal vertoon word. Hierdie elektroniese fasiliteit maak dit moontlik om selfs meer van ʼn versameling te toon, en om verskillendefasette van die versameling te toon. Soʼn fasiliteit maak dit ook moontlik om dit by ander klubs te vertoon, iets wat ons probeer aanmoedig omdat onderlinge besoeke ʼn belangrike bydrae tot ons stokperdjie lewer. Ons wil julle graag aanmoedig om na vore te kom en aan te bied om ʼn klubaand onder jou vlerk te neem met imteressante materiaal. NEW ANIMAL STAMPS FOR GREAT BRITAIN New cut-to-shape postage stamps from Great Britain’s Royal Mail are designed to cling to the edge of envelopes and postcards. The stamps feature animals, and in a play on words, the new issue is called Animail. The six stamps were issued 17 May in a single souvenir sheet. In announcing the stamps, Royal Mail said: “Featuring six endearing

animal characters that thanks to special die cutting will wrap around an envelope or cling on to a postcard, these are perfect for adorning a piece of mail and making someone smile before they have even opened the envelope.” The design firm Osborne Ross designed the stamps, using illustrations by Andrew Ross. Royal Mail said that in designing the Animail stamps Ross was given the challenge “to devise interactive stamps that particularly appealed to children and encouraged them to brighten up their letters and cards.” Starting on the left of the souvenir sheet the first two stamps show a woodpecker and snake, respectively. Both stamps are nondenominated, paying the first-class domestic rate (currently 64 pence). The next two stamps featuring a chimpanzee and a bat. They are denominated £1.05 to pay the rate for Europe up to

20 grams and the international rate up to 10 grams. The two stamps denominated £1.33 for international mail up to 20 grams depict an orangutan and a koala mother and her joey. International Security Printers printed the souvenir sheet by offset. For those using the stamps on mail, instructions on the back of the sheet explain how to use the white line or lines that appear on each stamp to position the stamp so that part of the animal extends past the edge of the envelope. For example, onthe Snake stamp the white line divides its tail in two, so that the lower part of the tail would hang off the edge of the envelope. Linn’s Stamp News of 6 Jun 2016

LIECHTENSTEIN – MUSIEKINSTRUMENTE Die samewerkende posondernemings in Europa (CEPT) het vir 2014 op die tema van musiekinstrumente besluit vir die Europa seëls van daardie jaar. Die Koninkryk van Liechtenstein het besluit om vir die doel ʼn geskiedkundige drom op ʼn posseël met waarde CHF 1.40 te gebruik. As agtergrond vir die drom word musieknote afgebeeld, soos wat dit deur die wagte van die Liechtenstein Nasionale Wag van 1760 bekend gemaak is. Die drom is deel van die versameling van die vors van Liechtenstein, soos wat dit deur Vors Joseph Wenzel I (1969 – 1772) aangekoop is. Die drom is ongeveer 50 sm hoog, en ʼn afbeeliding van die wapen van die vorstewhuis van Liechtenstein is daarop aangebring. Geskryf deur Robert Harm 29 Mei 2016

This is a term that applies to the earliest stamps of Portugal (from 1853) and Gambia (from 1869) on account of the albino embossed profiles on a coloured ground, resembling cameo jewellery. The Cameos of The Gambia are widely admired examples of 19th century stamp art. They were produced by De La Rue (London) after some considerable correspondence concerning price. De La Rue had quoted £270 for two dies and the necessary plates, but the administration had only voted £100 for dies, plates and stamps. The Governor of Heligoland reported that they only paid £29 from a printer in

Berlin. Printing was done by De La Rue, but the real cost is unknown. The stamps were used until 1898, initially printed on un-watermarked paper, later on watermarked paper, and perforated from 1880. Campaign cover (veldtog koevert) This is an envelope, wrapper or other postal packet posted by military or naval personnel on active service in wartime, distinguished by the endorsements cachet such as On Active Service (top middle of cover), or with added no stamps available, cachets of military units, censor markings (bottom left) or military postmarks. Cardboard (karton)

The term refers to fine-quality card of varying degrees of thickness, used for proofing impressions of stamp dies and plates, and also in the manufacture of postcards, letter cards and certain other classes of postal stationary. The stamps of Russia and Ukraine were also printed on cardboard with inscriptions on the back signifying their legal tender status as substitutes for subsidiary coinage during and immediately after WW1. The stamp on the left is a British postal stationary impression.

Carlist stamps (Carlistiese seëls) The term refers to stamps authorised by Don Carlos in for use in certain northern Spanish provinces during the Spanish Civil War of Apr 1872. He crowned himself as King Carlos VII of Spain. The stamps were issued on 1 Jul 1873 for the provinces Alava, Biscay, Guipuzcoa and Navarre, in Apr 1874 for Catalonia, and Sep 1874 for Valencia. The stamps bear various portraits of the self-proclaimed king. Prior to the release stamps of France were used on mail in these rebel provinces. It must be noted that reprints are plentiful and fake cancellations have been reported.

Carriers’ stamps (bestellerseëls) Strictly speaking, these are stamps issued by carriers and freight companies to prepay the charges on packets conveyed by them. Specifically, however, the term denotes the stamps issued by freight companies in the United States to indicate the charges on packets conveyed to or from local post offices prior to 1863 when general town delivery services were instituted. The stamp left was

an official issue of the US Post Office (the New York City Despatch). The first of these issues appeared in 1842 and are ranked second only to the British stamps of 1840. Cash on Delivery Labels (kontant by aflewering seëls)

These labels were issued by many post offices for packets on which trade charges (i.e. for the goods contained therein) are to be recovered from the addressee. Such a scheme was proposed for the British parcel post in 1883, but was rejected by the Treasury, Britain only introducing such a system in 1920. Many European countries developed their own COD system in the early 20th

century. These labels may be recognised by inscriptions such as Remboursement (French), Reembolso (Spanish),

Nachnahme (German), Dobirka (Czech), Rimborso or Assegno (Italian) or Postfoskott (Swedish). Swiss labels even included the name of the post office (shown). Check letters (kenletters) Check letters or corner letters appear in the lower corners of British stamps from 1840, and repeated in the upper corners as well from 1858. This was done as a precaution against piecing, the technique of matching up un-obliterated portions of two previously used stamps. Theoretically it also was a means of preventing forgery, something it failed to achieve. Of the 63 combinations of corner letters known, 15 of them could not exist on genuine stamps. Check letters were gradually discontinued in Britain between 1880 and 1902. They were briefly used by Victoria, Australia, between 1850 and 1857. Christmas stamps (Kersseëls)

These are special postage stamps, with or without a charity premium, issued for use on greeting cards at the Christmas season. Although Canada issued a stamp inscribed XMAS 1898 the first stamps actually intended for use on greeting cards were issued by Austria in 1937, followed by Hungary in 1943, Cubs in 1951 and Australia in 1957. Britain introduced Christmas aerogrammes in 1965 and adhesive stamps in 1966. Costa Rica pioneered compulsory stamps for use on Christmas mail in 1959.

Chromolithography (kleursteendruk of kleurlitografie) This is a form of lithography using two or more colours simultaneously. The earliest stamps of this type were the Zurich cantonal issue of 1843, with red lines as a background to motifs printed in black. This process was not widely used, although notable examples of four-colour stamps include the 1879 Soroka zemstvo issue and El Salvador’s pair of 1897 (shown on the right. Climax dater This is a rubber date-stamp used in 1855-1935 at minor sub-post offices in the UK. Originally intended solely for stamping postal orders, their use was extended to parcel labels (about 1895) and ordinary mail (about 1905). Because they had an average life of only 2-3 years, these date-stamps are sometimes, though erroneously, regarded by collectors as temporary rubber date-stamps, although some are known to have remained in use for upwards of 20 years. Coffee House mail (koffiehuispos) In the 18th century coffeehouses were often used as unofficial post offices to which mail was addressed for collection. Letters showing such manuscript endorsement are now much sought after by postal historians. These coffee-houses were also the start of insurance, and Lloyd’s of London owes its start from them – Ed) Compartment lines The term refers to irregular lines outside the normal printed area of the stamps (they can be seen on the right hand side of this block), occurring in letterpress plates where extraneous metal flashing has not been removed in the manufacturing process and therefore picks up ink during printing, and are common on Australian stamps of 1914-23. Compound of Perforation and Roulette (gemengde tanding en roelet)

The term refers to stamps using both of the principal methods of separation simultaneously, usually having horizontal perforations and vertical rouletting, or vice versa. Examples include the South African bantams of 1942-4, the Dutta quarter anna of 1912 and the Elema Art series of Papua New Guinea of 1969.
