Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving happens each year, on the fourth Thursday of the month of November. It is a national holiday celebrated by most Americans. We are going to show you how we celebrate it in our own families...

Page 3: STEM High School French 1 Class Presentation on Thanksgiving

Why do we celebrate it?In the US, Thanksgiving is about showing gratitude. We celebrate it in remembrance of the feast that pilgrims and Native Americans shared 1621.On the day of Thanksgiving, each family shares a feast and has various traditions. There is also always a big American Football game on TV, and the Macy’s parade which takes place in New York City.

Zach’s ThanksgivingWhat we do is we have a small family reunion in Utah (this is where all of my cousins live). I have all 26 cousins and all my uncles and aunts to have a huge feast with a big turkey. We also do something called forced family fun where we have to participate.

Tasveen’s ThanksgivingMy family is originally from India, so we don't really celebrate Thanksgiving; we just treat it like any other day. I plan to ski that week since I have school off and the resorts are open and I plan to finish any homework that I get. However, we do attend some Thanksgiving parties, but not often

Truman’s ThanksgivingEvery year, my dad’s side of the family gathers for a feast. This includes an uncle, two aunts, grandparents, and cousins. We get together at either my house or my cousins’ house and we eat turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and pie. There is usually two pies, one of which is pumpkin flavored, and the other is usually something we haven’t tried. This time of the year in colorado, it gets pretty cold, so we light a log in the fireplace and turn up the heat. Thanksgiving is fun for those who like good food, and that includes myself.

Madison’s ThanksgivingEvery year, my family usually has a homemade big feast that my mom and I make. Most of the time, one of our family members from California come out to Colorado and feast with us. Thanksgiving in my family is just a time to connect more and hang out until the big feast. My mom and I bake a big turkey, mashed sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top, sweet corn, salad and garlic bread. My favorite thing to eat out of the whole meal is the mashed sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top. Yum! This picture is what my favorite feast food (mashed sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top)eat looks like.

Matthew Brown’s ThanksgivingOn Thanksgiving, me and my family start off our day by watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV. Later, in the evening, we go to my grandparents house for our thanksgiving feast. My grandparents make most of the main dishes like the turkey, and my mom makes many of the side dishes. We’ve done this for many years, and we all enjoy this very much.

Haylee’s Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving, everyone in my family makes a dish. For example, last year my mom made yams with marshmallows on top, and she also made hot dogs wrapped in bacon inside a brown sugar sauce. I helped her. The things we eat vary from year to year, but we always have turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. The men often gather in the living room to watch the football game, and the women chat. The kids often go outside or upstairs to play around. < Yams with Pumpkin marshmallows pie >

Emma’s ThanksgivingThe week before Thanksgiving is busy with cooking, decorating, and coordinating guest’s schedules. But it is all worth it in the end. Most years my family spends the whole day cooking and preparing food. We make cranberry sauce, turkey stuffing, homemade dinner rolls, apple crisp, pumpkin pie, and that’s only the beginning. In my family, it is tradition for the children the make the mashed potatoes and the apple crisp. I don’t know why, it just has always been that way! While we are making food we usually watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. When the guests arrive, we eat appetizers and do group games with all my cousins in the cul de sac. Then, we do what Thanksgiving is famous for- eat! Finally, After the meal everyone watches “It’s the Great Pumpkin: Charlie Brown” and tosses around a football in the backyard.

Leah’s ThanksgivingI start my Thanksgiving off with watching the Macy's Thanksgiving parade. Then I help me dad cook the Thanksgiving meal. We cook the main dishes like the turkey and some of the side dishes like the stuffing, the mashed potatoes, and the corn bread. Then I decorate the house with thanksgiving decorations. Afters that my cousins come over and they bring the desserts (pies, and ice cream) and the green bean casserole. Around 3 o’clock or 4 o’clock we eat. After we are done eating the meal, we put the rest of the mashed potatoes on my dogs noses. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.

Peter’s ThanksgivingEach year for Thanksgiving, my family goes to my Grandma and Grandpa’s (dad’s

side) house, which is in Brush, a farming and ranching town in Colorado. We are very traditional when it comes to food. We eat turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, dumplings, and pie. But we also do some things that are different from the average family, for example, my grandma makes something called, “fish-eye salad.” It is a salad in which tiny balls of rice are coated in a sugary sauce, with marshmallow mixed into it. It is a bit bad for you, but a scoop is all I need. Since we are out on a ranch, and mostly alone for almost a quarter mile, we usually shoot guns. This isn’t a tradition in America, but it is for us. We get targets and all of the men shoot gun for fun, and sport. Lastly, we go inside and watch the football game, and enjoy ourselves until we leave.

In my family, Thanksgiving is not that big of a deal since we have originally come from India. In the morning we would watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. Then we would have a meal with the ham and mashed potatoes. After that we would watch TV then sleep.

Dylan’s ThanksgivingOn thanksgiving I wake up in the morning like it is just any other day, but when I go to my

kitchen my family is already cooking the dishes for dinner. My family usually spends the day cooking and sitting around but at dinner we have a real feast. We have turkey, salad, rolls, cranberry sauce, beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, and some others including a goat cheese and spinach dish that I can’t even pronounce right. This year will be different because my family is going to a resort town called Steamboat Springs. We go to a nice hotel when we usually go in the summer. Thanksgiving for my family is a special holiday for fun and socializing.

Broder’s ThanksgivingI wake up early to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. We have dinner earlier than normal. We get to see relatives close and far. My parents are divorced so I go to both and have two small Thanksgivings. I sometimes get to see a lot of distant relatives and sometimes it is just my parents and sisters and brother. At midnight, Black Friday comes around and we get amazing deals for Christmas gifts. Black Friday doesn’t have anything to do with Thanksgiving though.

Jakob’s ThanksgivingUsually we hang around the house during Thanksgiving and invite friends of ours over for Thanksgiving dinner. Once we say our prayers and what we are thankful for we eat the wonderful feast that my mother has made. We usually have turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. After that, everyone has a good time by either having a party or watching football on TV. After a while everyone leaves to go home.

Joshua’s ThanksgivingEvery Thanksgiving day, my family and I wake up early to watch Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. The rest of the day contains playing games and watching television until around 5:00 p.m when the fun begins. From five o’clock until dinner, the whole family and some friends comes over to eat a variety of foods such as turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, fruits, and pumpkin pie while my parents cook the food. My mom cooks the turkey along with the mashed potatoes; my dad makes jello, cranberry sauce, and organizes the variety of fruits. When the food is done, everyone sits at the table awaiting the food until it is time to eat. After everyone has gobbled up their food and the table is clear of crumbs, my family goes outside to our backyard to play some soccer and football.

Nicki’s Thanksgiving

My Thanksgiving parties are fairly large. A small party for us is around 16 people. My mom and my aunt switch every year for who hosts. We tend to have five tables to seat everyone, and at the end, we all play a game of Monopoly. Sometimes we even invite our friends’ family come over to hang out too!

Keric Warton’s ThanksgivingThanksgiving is a great way for my family to meet cousins that we haven’t seen in a while. Our grandmother makes the best mashed potatoes and gravy, which makes this holiday a whole lot better. I tend to think of Thanksgiving as Christmas without the presents.

Aaron P’s Thanksgiving

On thanksgiving normally my mom’s side of the family meets up at my uncles house and we feast on turkey, pumpkin pie, and triple chocolate brownies. After the feast me and my cousins normally play games for a few hours while the parents talk before I have to go home.

Sophie’s ThanksgivingFor Thanksgiving, we go to Arizona to celebrate with my extended family. Usually, my family wakes up, and we eat our favorite muffins. We watch the Thanksgiving parade while we eat breakfast. Then, we get ready and go hang out with my Grandparents and cousins. Then, we go out to lunch, and we eat Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, potatoes, green beans. We like to stuff ourselves silly! Then, for dessert we have Jell-O and pumpkin pie! We usually stay for a couple of days just for some family time! My favorite part is being with my extended family, and being in the warm weather, instead of cold Colorado. My favorite food is either sweet potato mash, turkey, or pumpkin pie.

Page 29: STEM High School French 1 Class Presentation on Thanksgiving

Karenna’s ThanksgivingI usually celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving which is on October 13th rather than American Thanksgiving on November 27th. We have the same food and celebrate the same way as Americans by having dinner with really good food. Such as pumpkin pie, turkey, and cranberry sauce. Basically the only difference is that we do not have a Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, which happens in NYC.

Page 30: STEM High School French 1 Class Presentation on Thanksgiving

Allie’s ThanksgivingEvery year my family usually gets together at

my house or one of my aunts house, and we starts cooking 4 hours before dinner. We always have a turkey and pie. We have pumpkin and apple pie every year. The rest of the boys all go and play football at a park or out front. Then once dinner is done, we all start like a buffet and everyone gets their food. We all sit down at the tables in the dining room. All the little cousins sit at another table.

Hope’s ThanksgivingFor Thanksgiving my family always visits my house. All my older siblings and their kids come. We spend time together until Thanksgiving Dinner is done. We eat things like turkey, cornbread, corn casserole (really good), punch (soda and sherbet) and other typical thanksgiving foods. Before eating we go around the table saying what we are thankful for. After eating we either watch the football game or take a nap.

Peyton’s ThanksgivingOn Thanksgiving, my family usually goes to Virginia where my grandparents live. This year, my aunts and uncle will be there to. In the morning, we watch the Macy’s Day Parade which is so much fun. After that, we usually decorate the Christmas tree, which my grandma is very particular about, but it is still a lot of fun. After we decorate the tree, we usually watch a Christmas movie while my grandma prepares dinner. When it gets close to time for dinner everyone helps out. We make cranberry sauce, stuffing, bread, mixed vegetables, potatoes, and of course, a giant turkey. The food is so good and the left-overs are even great. After dinner, we have dessert. Dessert is usually pumpkin pie, pudding, and sometimes brownies or cake. After we have dessert, everyone has to help clean up and then we can settle down and get warm up and watch more Christmas movies. I love spending Thanksgiving with my family! It is so much fun to eat lots of great food and spend lots of time with everyone!
