STEM IS IN FACS COURSES!!Utah has adopted the national vision statement: "Family and Consumer Sciences Education empowers individuals and families across the life span to manage the challenge of living and working in a diverse global society. The relationship between work and family is our unique focus."

Vocational Family and Consumer Sciences prepares youth and adults for competence in the work of the family as well as for occupations based

on Family and Consumer Sciences skills.

The concept of work, whether in a family or job setting, is central to vocational/applied technology education.

Family and Consumer Sciences Education should be perceived as an important part of the academic curriculum which is a practical application of academics to everyday life.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

RECIPE RACE… GO!FOLDER FUN

This activity takes a little prep work to initially get it set up, but once you have the folders ready set up is fast. Credit to Janie Robinson and Laycee Johnson for the original idea and general template. This activity gets students into the kitchens quickly without them really cooking so it is a great to way to pre-assess students on general measuring and equivalent skills and information.

Learning and applying basic measuring skills early in Foods courses will help products turn out like this:

Instead of like this:

F-WORD PRACTICEFor crying out loud… were talking about “FRACTIONS!” Students in the classroom today (or any generation for that matter) have a love/hate relationship with fractions. This worksheet involves using a standard set of dry measuring cups, and allows students the opportunity to quickly practice measuring various fractions. Practice those basic measuring equivalents that will be used in the kitchen for every lab.

Get some cheap measuring cups for the math teachers at your school to help them teach fractions!!

This is not a lesson plan to use if you don’t want your students moving. This game is challenging and gets the students going. They practice basic doubling and halving skills over and over again. It takes a little prep work, but students enjoy it and it reinforces the math concepts your students need to know.

How Well Can You Measure?Fractions are a big part of measuring and cooking. But how do you do it? Here is a standard set of measuring cups. Notice that there is NOT a 2/3 c. or a ¾ c. Prove what you know by putting the measuring cups together to get different measurements. Put a check mark under the measuring cup(s) you would use to measure the amount. If you will need the cup more than once, mark it more than once.

Amount 1 c. ½ c. 1/3 c. ¼ c.

1) 1 c.

2) 3/4 c.

3) ½ c.

4) 2/3 c.

5) 1/3 c.

6) ¼ c.

7) 1 1/3 c.

8) 2 ¾ c.

9) 1 2/3 c.

10) 2 ½ c.

Recipe Race (practices doubling and halving a recipe)*Break students into teams of 2, and provide each team with a dry erase marker and a starter card. Have students write their names on the blank side of the starter card. Attach the numbered cards to a magnetic surface (door). *Playing the game- once students finish the starter card, they check it for correctness. If it is correct, student will attach their starter card to the board. If it isn’t correct, they will correct it. Once the starter card is complete, students will pick a numbered card from the door. Students compete to finish as many as possible in the time period (whatever time period you want… I did 15 minutes). Students must check their card for correctness before getting another card. Completed cards are attached to the board under their starter card. Each completed card is worth points. Cards # 2, # 15, #21, #27, #33, #44, #56, #61, #69, and #73 win 3 points each. All other cards are worth 1 point each. The team with the most points at the end of the playing period wins a treat.*To check if answers are correct, I put several copies of the answer key on an empty table. No markers are allowed at this table… students must go back to their own seats to make corrections.

GOT WATER?This lesson plan takes a little preparation and some planning on the part of the students to track or at least be aware of how much water they drink.

It will take a full class period to go through the entire lesson, but it could be condensed to utilize the parts of the lessons that would most benefit your students.

The imbedded math concepts are very well outlined.

McDONALDS MEALTake a few minutes to do this with your students. This is the example from the Math in CTE video.

These links will be helpful and are interesting to mess with a little:1. nutrition.mcdonalds.com/getnutrition/nutritionfacts.pdf2. www.fastfoodnutrition.org/10_r-mcdonalds/nutrition-chart.html3. www.mcdonalds.com/us/en/full_menu_explorer.html

Ma and Pa Kettle are a great example of how math can go wrong. So let’s use math to be sure we aren’t getting gypped!!Why is it important to know the cost of the recipes we prepare? Ever notice when you shop that not all food is priced the same? For example, Marie Calendars pies… are they all priced the same? If not, why are they different? This activity will help students to become better consumers as well helping them understand the cost per serving.

SHARING TIME

SHARE’N STEALPROMOTE

One of the most important things you can do to build your program is to promote the awesome things you are already doing in your classrooms. Let parents know that you are reinforcing math, language arts, and science concepts in your classes. When you are doing something cool, which is like, EVERYDAY, invite administrators and guidance counselors into your classroom so they can see it and be a part of it first hand. Call the local newspapers and invite them into your classroom. Promote your students and show off all the cool things they are doing and

Creating in your class.

Take the time to become aware of key buzzwords in the education field. STEM… know it. Know where to find the resources, that have already been created, to prove to decision-making stakeholders that FACS courses are VITAL in the public school system today.

Support each other in the things we are doing. Be wiling to share ideas and activities you have created. Join the organizations that fight for us. Educate yourself on what is going on in education in your school, district, state and on the national level.

PLEASE take the time to share what has worked in your classroom with the rest of us. Maybe as we went through the activities you saw something that could be tweaked to make it more efficient or educational… share your thoughts!!
