STEM Mentoring: 8 Pathways to Getting StartedCo-written by Julie Kantor and Justin Miteng

In light of the diversity reports coming out these past two years from the top tech companies in the country such as Google and LinkedIn, we hope that we all can jump into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) mentoring to make sure women and minorities have the skills needed for the jobs. Almost all jobs will require some skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

We need to THINK BIG NOW about girls in STEM. Over 80% of America's jobs will require STEM skills and remember, the iPhone would not be the iPhone without the 'A'- arts and design.

So we invite you, our STEM workforce (if you choose to accept this mission to join us and commit to mentoring in STEM skills).

But first, who is a mentee and how do I find one?

She or he is out there. Close your eyes and visualize:• A young woman/man who has reached out to you in the last three to six months for career help.• Perhaps someone you met visiting a school, or who sent you a follow-up email that grabbed your

attention.• A friend who asked you to meet with her daughter, sister or niece for career advice or a Summer

internship.• Part of your company HR strategy or ERG/BRG group.• Maybe a young woman who left a B-level impression on you but was passed up for that IT job at your

company for a common error that you see in recent employee candidates.• A young woman at the gym, church, synagogue, or mosque who asked you about your career or how

you balance it all as an Engineer.

She or he is out there. Close your eyes and visualize (Continues):• A high school girl or college freshman who is just about to drop her STEM career

dreams because she thinks it is difficult or because of peer pressure or lack of knowledge about how a STEM course could change her life.

• The young man introduced to you by a youth serving organization in your community, state, or online.

• That bright young woman/man who says 'hi' every day as you pass her each day on your walk to the lab.

To get the relationship off to a great start . . . reach out to him/her:A. One to One -- Start Simple"I would like to invite you to meet for a cup of coffee, tea, Google or a Skype chat." See if there is chemistry and if you can work together toward specific educational and career goals with a skills-based approach.B. If #1 goes well, the mentoring relationship begins. Set expectations right on the front end around goals and meeting timetables. We suggest you meet for 6 months to one year (12 - 24 hours). Need help at the company level? Ask Twomentor to help your with Flash Mentoring and The Mentor Road Trip™ Action Guide and Training.C. Here are our eight suggested pathways to build your mentoring 'initiatives with great intention:• 1. Face-to-face mentoring that includes a skills-based component and can include

competitions if you work through a fabulous NGO like SkillsUSA, Real Robotics, Girls Inc., Girl Scouts, Girls Who Code, InRoads and more.

• 2. Online mentoring (Skype, Google Chats, Lync, MentorNet.org, Email, Text, White Labeled Online Platforms . . .)

• 3. Internships or apprenticeships with a designated mentor for high school and college students or returning veterans. If we could wave one magic wand at Twomentor, LLC, we want to see every young person in America have an internship experience before graduating high school and bonus credit for middle school internships with a defined mentor. Here are some tips if you have interns this Summer.

C. Here are our eight suggested pathways to build your mentoring 'initiatives with great intention (Continues):

• 4. Establishing workplace mentoring of the young women/men who already work at your company and are getting their sea legs or need to evolve to the next level.

• 5. Sponsorship -- Men are 42 percent more likely to have a sponsor champion them for opportunity according to Economist Sylvia Ann Hewlett. Helping a young woman or an executive with key introductions for opportunities, networking, promotions and more!

• 6. Reverse Mentoring -- Ask the new Gen Z's and millennials to mentor you about their world, their cultures, the technology they use and so much more!

• 7. Diverse Mentoring -- Stretch yourself, mentor someone who doesn't look like you. Someone of another gender, race, religion. You both will grow enormously as will the future Diversity of our companies. Just do it!

• 8. Peer Mentoring -- or a start a Leanin.org circle, a great one for more senior executives with less hierarchies.

We advise that you as an individual or company choose the appropriate pathway or a combination of pathways that suit your preferences and the preferences of your mentee. Twomentor, LLC, is a management consulting firm that provides mentor & sponsor training, MentorCULTURE strategy, flash mentoring sessions and global speaking to elevate women and millennials in the workforce.
