The campaign’s working definition of youth social action is…

· Young people taking practical action in the service of others

Whether it’s campaigning against climate change, caring for someone in their

community, providing peer support online or fundraising for a charity, we want all

young people to see the difference they can make

Qualifying statements:

• Relates to people or the environment outside of their own home, including the

digital environment

• Is generally voluntary but there may be occasions where organised activities

(e.g., in school) qualify as social action

• Is generally unpaid unless subsidised as part of a service year, apprenticeship, or

employer-supported days

• Examples include volunteering, fundraising, community organising, campaigning,

mentoring, tutoring, befriending, etc.

Six principles

Page 15: Step up to serve: presentation to CCCW, Dec 2014

The Red Cross UK

Recognising the amazing things that young people do through the annual Humanitarian Citizen

Awards, encouraging people to nominate young heroes who have taken social action through,

volunteering, community service, fundraising and responding to first aid emergencies.

Offering crisis education in communities where there is a greater risk of: emergencies of localised

flooding and the harmful effects of the weather, stigmatising behaviour towards refugee and migrant

communities, understanding the impact conflict can have on a community

National Trust

National Trust will increase the number of family volunteering opportunities in the National Trust, finding

ways for 1000 young people to volunteer their time alongside parents, grandparents and other family

members.

By also increasing to 200 (by 2020) the number of three to six month voluntary internships for young

people, helping support them to develop skills for employment.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE)

Work with the Step Up To Serve team on a call to action to the 30,000 extra adult volunteers who would

be needed to join our partner organisations in order to support that volume of participants.

Grow the availability of the DofE programme so that by 2020 there will be 500,000 young people

participating.

Suggested discussion points

• What is happening in terms of young people taking action to combat climate change in

Wales?

– What is great that the rest of the UK could learn from?

– What is challenging?

• Is there a good evidence base for: The impact of this kind of youth social action on

young people? The impact on the community?

• Do young people move easily between opportunities from 10-20 years old?

• Is the term ‘social action’ widely used? Does the definition we have used resonate?

• How can the #will campaign best work with colleagues in Climate Change Commission

Wales and other key partners of the commission moving forward? How can we add

value? How can we best ensure you are all able to play an active part in shaping and

growing the #iwill campaign?
