An executor or executrix is a person named in a deceased person's will. Their role is to bring in the assets and pay the liabilities of the deceased estate. The Executor also ensures that the wishes of the deceased person as recorded in the will are carried out.

In general terms, the Executor must:

• Obtain the death certificate• Locate the original will• Notify the beneficiaries

• Arrange and pay for the funeral• Value, secure and insure the

assets of the deceased estate.• Obtain a Grant of Probate (if

necessary)

• Manage the deceased person's assets

• Pay the liabilities• Finalize the deceased's person's

affairs such as arranging for pets to be cared for, mail redirected and the cancellation of services

• Divide the estate and distribute property and/or money to the beneficiaries

• Finalize the tax affairs of the deceased.

• In the event of a dispute about the meaning of the will or an inheritance claim, an Executor may defend legal proceedings.

• The will may have also established trusts and appointed the Executor as the trustee of those trusts
