Anticipated HonorsHonors designations for Spring/Summer 2016 J.D. candidates are based on grades earned through a candidate’s next-to-last semester. Final graduation honors for all degrees will be determined by the Registrar after final grades have been posted. Final graduation honors will appear on the diploma and official transcript.
Final DegreeThe listing of degrees and academic honors for Spring/Summer 2016 candidates in this program are preliminary and subject to final degree requirement evaluation. A candidate earns a degree after the Registrar determines that the candidate has satisfactorily completed all graduation requirements and posted final grades on the official record. The diploma of Stetson University College of Law, signed and sealed by its appropriate officers, is the official public document evidencing that a degree has been awarded.

The Symbols of CommencementAcademic Regalia: Academic disciplines are noted by color; law is represented as purple. The doctoral gown has bell sleeves with velvet chevrons on the sleeves and velvet on the panels. The hood is bound and edged with purple velvet and lined with green, the official color of Stetson University as the institution conferring the degree. The tam combines the symbolism of the book and that of a privileged guild. Students graduating with anticipated honors wear a gold tassel on the cap, and others wear a purple tassel denoting the discipline of law. Students wearing purple cords are LL.M. graduates. Gold cords are worn by students graduating with anticipated honors. Student leaders and named award winners wear green cords. Students wearing blue cords have earned the William F. Blews Pro Bono Service Award. Students wearing red, white and blue cords are U.S. Military Veterans.
The Mace: The Stetson University Mace, used during all commencement ceremonies, is a ceremonial staff used as a symbol of the right to confer degrees. The Stetson mace, designed by Episcopalian Canon Edward Nason West of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, New York, was presented to President J. Ollie Edmunds in 1956.
The Medallion: The President’s Medallion, worn at official academic occasions, was first used for the inauguration of President John E. Johns in 1969. The silver medallion includes the University Seal embraced by a wreath of laurel. The circular seal, adopted between 1889 and 1891, bears the motto Pro Deo et Veritate (“For God and Truth”) and the Light of Truth resting on the Book of Wisdom.

Honorary Degree Citation
RodeRick L. iReLand, you have distinguished yourself as a path-breaking jurist, legal scholar and role model.
You are a Distinguished Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, where you have taught since 1978. You have served as a judge for 37 years, with the Boston Juvenile Court from 1977 to 1990, the Massachusetts Appeals Court from 1990 to 1997, and the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court from 1997 to 2014.
You made history leading the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court as its first African-American chief justice from 2010 to 2014, serving on the court for 17 years. You were one of the four justices who voted in favor of same-sex marriage in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health in 2003, the nation’s very first case in which a state supreme court declared same-sex marriage constitutional.
You received your bachelor’s degree from Lincoln University, J.D. from Columbia University Law School, LL.M. from Harvard University Law School, and Ph.D. in Law, Policy and Society from Northeastern University. You began your legal career in 1969 as a Neighborhood Legal Services attorney in Harlem, and then worked as a public defender in Boston with the Roxbury Defenders Committee, becoming executive director after serving as chief attorney and deputy director. You served from 1975 to 1977 as assistant secretary and chief legal counsel for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Administration and Finance.
You are the author of a two-volume treatise on Massachusetts Juvenile Law published by Thomson/Reuters in its Massachusetts Practice Series. You have been widely recognized for your community contributions and professional achievements, and have received numerous honors and awards.
In light of your many achievements, and under the authority vested in me by Stetson University’s Board of Trustees, I proudly present you with the Honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
