Held at the Stettler and District Agricultural Soci- ety’s agriplex on July 25, the glowering skies held in its rain until the end of the competition, and let the ground stay mostly dry, an improvement over the pre- vious year’s competition. As part of the festivities, tractor collectors brought out their collections and shined them up on show, a barbecue was held, and the competition itself took place. According to event orga- nizers, tractor owners came from all across Alberta to participate in the event, resulting in seven different classes of tractors pulling in the event. The classes were determined by the weights dragged behind the tractor. The tractor tires worked hard to keep a firm grip on the ground, kicking up dust as the tractor dragged a counterweight behind it. Drivers and judges knew the tractor had reached its limit when the tires began to spin, giving up on the haul. Each driver and his or her tractor had two pulls to determine who would wear the crown in each class. In the Bantam class, Robin Larsen took first place with an impressive 222.6 feet pull. In Class 1, Dave Sandin came in first with a pull of 293.4 feet, followed by Bill Adam with a pull of 283.8 feet, and Vernon Puzey with a pull of 265.8 feet. The competition’s sole woman competitor, Deanne Mossel, took the crown in Class 2 with a pull of 341.7 feet. “I love that there’s a woman competing,” Stet- tler and Country Museum’s Karen Wahlund said. “This isn’t just for men. I hope we have more next year.” Mossel’s impressive 341.7 feet was followed by George Dell with a pull of 311.3 feet, and Puzey with a pull of 279.6 feet. In Class 3, Darren Rouse pulled the counterweight for 270.3 feet before his wheels began to spin. He led the pack, followed by Erik Vokes with 245.7 feet, and Rouse’s run on another tractor with a pull of 232.5 feet. Class 4 was won by Regi- nald Mossett with a pull of an even 600 feet, destroy- ing his competition. The nearest competitor, with a pull of 478.2 feet, was Ken Jones, followed by Howard Shields with a pull of 356.2 feet. Puzey was back on yet a third tractor, this time claiming the top spot in Class 5 with a pull of 261 feet. Alfred Erichsen fol- lowed with 244.2 feet, and Brian McDonald came in third with a pull of 170.7 feet. In the final class, Class 6, Ken Norman took first with a pull of 304.2 feet, fol- lowed by Dean Fuller with a pull of 164.5 feet. The classes are de- cided by tractor strength, so a lighter-weight trac- tor wouldn’t be competing against something with a much stronger engine. As each tractor took to the drag stretch, judges kept watch and walked alongside, wearing bright reflective vests and carry- ing neon orange flags. The announcer spoke a bit about each competitor – announc- ing their name and where they were from – and then spoke at length about the type of tractor and any after-market modifications made to the farming equip- ment. What tractors weren’t pulling were on display, and did relatively decent traffic, especially amongst tractor fans and young families, who brought their children to see the big-wheeled farm machines. The Antique Tractor Club, which officially was formed in 2013 but has been an unofficial group- ing of tractor aficionados for many years, runs out of the Stettler Museum, where a building to display trac- tor and tractor history was erected in 2013. The event wouldn’t have been possible without the help of many volunteers, according to event organiz- ers. Sponsors helped cover the costs of the events, but it was the pullers and vol- unteers who made it pos- sible to run. Stacey Lavallie/Weekender reporter Deanne Mossel, the only woman competing in the Stettler Antique Tractor Club’s annual tractor pull, aggressively powered her tractor 341.7 feet to take first place in her class-two competition, blowing away her male competition. Weekender reporterThe annual Stettler An-

tique Tractor Club’s third annual antique tractor pull saw competitors and audi-ence come from far-and-wide to see whose antique prize had the most pull.

Held at the Stettler and District Agricultural Soci-ety’s agriplex on July 25, the glowering skies held in its rain until the end of the competition, and let the ground stay mostly dry, an improvement over the pre-vious year’s competition.

As part of the festivities, tractor collectors brought out their collections and shined them up on show, a barbecue was held, and the competition itself took place.

According to event orga-nizers, tractor owners came from all across Alberta to participate in the event, resulting in seven different classes of tractors pulling in the event.

Each driver and his or

her tractor had two pulls to determine who would wear the crown in each class.

“I love that there’s a woman competing,” Stet-tler and Country Museum’s Karen Wahlund said. “This isn’t just for men. I hope we have more next year.”

Mossel’s impressive 341.7 feet was followed by George Dell with a pull of 311.3 feet, and Puzey with a pull of 279.6 feet.

In Class 3, Darren Rouse pulled the counterweight for 270.3 feet before his wheels began to spin. He led the pack, followed by Erik Vokes with 245.7 feet, and Rouse’s run on another tractor with a pull of 232.5 feet.

Class 4 was won by Regi-nald Mossett with a pull of an even 600 feet, destroy-ing his competition. The nearest competitor, with a pull of 478.2 feet, was Ken Jones, followed by Howard

Shields with a pull of 356.2 feet.

Puzey was back on yet a third tractor, this time claiming the top spot in Class 5 with a pull of 261 feet. Alfred Erichsen fol-lowed with 244.2 feet, and Brian McDonald came in third with a pull of 170.7 feet.

In the final class, Class 6, Ken Norman took first with a pull of 304.2 feet, fol-lowed by Dean Fuller with a pull of 164.5 feet.

The classes are de-cided by tractor strength, so a lighter-weight trac-tor wouldn’t be competing against something with a much stronger engine.

As each tractor took to the drag stretch, judges kept watch and walked alongside, wearing bright reflective vests and carry-ing neon orange flags. The announcer spoke a bit about each competitor – announc-ing their name and where they were from – and then

spoke at length about the type of tractor and any after-market modifications made to the farming equip-ment.

What tractors weren’t pulling were on display, and did relatively decent traffic, especially amongst tractor fans and young families, who brought their children to see the big-wheeled farm machines.

The Antique Tractor Club, which officially was formed in 2013 but has

been an unofficial group-ing of tractor aficionados for many years, runs out of the Stettler Museum, where a building to display trac-tor and tractor history was erected in 2013.

The event wouldn’t have been possible without the help of many volunteers, according to event organiz-ers. Sponsors helped cover the costs of the events, but it was the pullers and vol-unteers who made it pos-sible to run.

Bankruptcy – a big risk for today’s seniors

Many Canadians approaching retirement today are facing a risk that seemed unimaginable a decade ago, and that is running out of money and facing bankruptcy. A typical case is a couple in their mid-sixties with good jobs, who raised their family, own their home, and thought they were set for retirement. Then several things happened. One of them had a stroke, which took two years to recover from. Their RRSP GICs rolled over from an 8 per cent rate of return to 2.5 per cent, and their basement fl ooded, damage which wasn’t covered by insurance. They found themselves deep in debt with no choice but to declare bankruptcy. Forced to sell their home and rent an apartment, they ended up living on monthly government CPP, OAS and Seniors’ Benefi t cheques.

Many today are in similar situations, carrying mortgages and other debt into retirement with less than $100,000 in savings, thinking that with their monthly government cheques that they will be OK. Sadly, instead of the golden years of retirement, a growing number are going to go bankrupt. According to the Offi ce of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy, 10 per cent of those who declared bankruptcy in 2014 were aged 65 and older, a disturbing 20 per cent increase from 2010. And

more seniors are retiring with signifi cant debt. According to Statistics Canada, close to 50 per cent of those aged 65 and over today retire with debt.

There are several reasons for this. Seniors often end up digging into their savings to cover unexpected bills, and sometimes take on more debt in the process. Another reason may actually be a plus; we are living longer, but it means many of us risk outliving our savings. Another factor is today’s low interest rates. This can be a double edged sword for seniors, as on one hand

it may encourage them to take on more debt, but on the other, few have enough savings to live on GICs earning 2 per cent.

Paying down debt in senior years on a fi xed income can be challenging. Add in unplanned setbacks such as a fi nancially needy adult child, illness or other unexpected expenses and the bills can become overwhelming. It’s easy to underestimate the fi nancial costs of dealing with ill health. For many people under 75, the most common event that derails their fi nancial plans is an unplanned early retirement, often due to ill health.

Rather than waiting until you are retired, take the time to fi gure out if you can actually afford to. Retiring at 65 without suffi cient retirement savings when you may live into your nineties is risky.

Weekender reporterA strange thing happened

to me in July, one I’ve taken a few weeks to consider.

As anyone who has had the opportunity to speak with me for more than five minutes would know, I had my first vacation in July, the first since joining the Stettler Independent, Cas-tor Advance, and Regional Weekender. As I hadn’t been with my previous pa-per long enough to accrue vacation time, I hadn’t had a vacation there either. I hadn’t had one since I left Ontario in March 2013.

To say that I was excited would be very disingenous. I was ecstatic. I missed my family, especially my moth-er. I missed the local pizza places, because I’m a big pizza fan and, alas, I’ve not quite found anything like Toppers Pizza or Cortina Pizza out here.

Mostly, I just wanted to go “home” and enjoy that atmosphere, the place I’d lived almost my entire life, save for a small time living in Toronto.

And the trip was fabu-lous. There were trees ev-erywhere, the road never ran straight for more than a sneeze, the speed limit was 80km/h in most places.

And the pizza was amaz-ing.

So was the lake.So was being with my

mom and my family. Two weeks flew by like a

lightning strike and I soon found myself through se-curity at the Sudbury, Ont. airport, standing at the glass wall that separates the arriv-als from the secure depar-tures. On the other side was my mom.

(Seriously, it could have been a Spock/Kirk moment. “MAAAAAAAAWM!”)

I was sad to leave, but the soul-crushing fear and de-spair didn’t come over me. In fact, I was kind of excited to go.

I wanted to go “home.”As I flew from Sudbury

to Toronto, then from To-ronto to Edmonton, chasing the sun as it set, that thought bounced around in my head.

I had spent the past two years wanting to go “home” to Ontario. I remember driving away, crying and sobbing, because I knew I

wouldn’t see my family for months, if not years.

Yet when I was there I

wasn’t home. I was a visi-tor.

No matter how much Alberta, and Stettler specifi cally, has become my home, this will always be a magical place for me. Even if the fl agpole is atrociously crooked. This is Fairbank Lake, in Greater Sudbury, a view from the “small lake” bay from our deck.

You may have to keep working, as even part time work will make a big difference in supplementing your savings and government benefi ts. Figuring out a budget and a best estimate

of future living expenses will help to determine if you can retire as planned, or if you need to delay it until you are able.

An increasing number of seniors are looking at reverse mortgages, which uses their home equity as a piggy bank to make ends meet. If you are

considering this, I would suggest you fi rst sit down with a trusted fi nancial advisor and check out other options that may have lower fees and offer more fl exibility.

There are a lot of sources for information out there. Take the time to fi gure out your numbers. If you need help with this process, fi nd a trusted fi nancial advisor to work with to develop your retirement plan.

Bankruptcy – a big riskfor today’s seniors

A visitor to a very famil-iar place, sure, but a visitor. Somewhere in the past two years, things had changed.

My friends picked me up from the Edmonton airport and took me to their home, where I slept out the rest of the night, then woke to drive home from Edmonton to

Stettler.Drive “home.”When I lived in Saskatch-

ewan, I never felt like any-thing but an outsider. But Stettler and the area around it has become home in the past 18 months I’ve lived here. Watching the sun rise higher in the bright blue sky, over rolling hills of gold (and a rippling field of blue as I passed a blue field too –

what’s blue?), I realized that I’d settled down here.

I had the opportunity to take a job offer in Ontario, in my home city, for the first newspaper I ever worked for. It pays about the same, comes with reasonable ben-efits, and has the advantage of bringing me “home.”

I didn’t even apply.It’s weird. I don’t want to

leave. This is home.

That’s not fair!

Stealthily sneaking to the plunger after missing her previous throw, this intrepid Stettler youth let the oth-ers playing distract the victim and sent him for a wet dunk! The dunk tank was present at one of the many Stettler “block parties,” a fad that’s taken the commu-nity by storm after the town created a permit system to allow them this year.

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

5021 - 50 Street Stettler, ABemail: [email protected] Smile is our Reward

Back to school season can be as expensive for parents as it is exciting for students. Once the ini-tial letdown of the end of summer vacation wears off, many kids are excited to return to school, where they can see their friends, study their favorite sub-jects and participate in extracurricular activities.

Parents of school-aged youngsters may share in that excitement while also knowing that back to school season can stretch their budgets. One of the ways to salvage those budgets is to save on school supplies. Fortu-nately, there are several ways parents can do just that.

• Be patient. Shopping early can save shoppers money in many instances, but parents may benefit by exercising patience when it comes to buying school supplies for their children. Teachers often give students lists of sup-plies they will need for each class, and parents who wait to receive such lists can avoid spending money on items their kids won’t need. Even if you wait it out, you may be able to get a head start, as some teachers may post supply lists on school websites, while others might email lists to par-ents before back to school season hits full swing.

• Take inventory. If you have more than one child, chances are you already have lots of school sup-plies around the house. Dust off kids’ backpacks and study areas from last school year to determine which supplies you need to buy and which you already have. Going for-ward, encourage kids to store their supplies in a predetermined area once the school year ends, as this will make next year’s inventory that much easi-er to examine and assess.

• Spend more now to save later. While inex-pensive supplies can be hard to resist, such items likely won’t withstand the test of time, forcing you to spend time and money each year buying replace-ment supplies. Paying more now for certain items, including stronger

backpacks and more high-ly rated calculators, may end up saving you money in the long run, even if the initial pill is somewhat tough to swallow.

• Use technology to your advantage. Depart-ment stores and busi-nesses that sell school supplies, such as phar-macies and office stores, may or may not discount too many items once back to school season hits full swing. But savvy par-ents can still find deals by using technology to their advantage when shopping for school sup-plies. Download apps

like RetailMeNot to your smartphone and enable its updates so your phone es-sentially notifies you of any discounts the moment you walk into a given store.

If you don’t receive any updates, search for discounts via the app or the Internet as you shop. Chances are strong that there are deals to be had, even if you don’t learn of the deals until you arrive at the store.

School supplies can be expensive, but parents can employ several strategies to save on school supplies now and in the future.
