The process of preparing this application has been very cathartic. I have spent time re-reading my MA dissertation (and finding lots I now disagree, and still agree with). I’ve looked over old work and re-considered what it meant then and now. I have also taken the time to think about where I stand with regards my own viewpoint on interactive design and what I have contributed to this field.

Online. Digital. Interactive, call it what you will, has arguably gone through roughly three major phases in the last ten years. Phase one was really the boom/bust years where it was about technology and software; I call it the Skip Intro era.

Phase two has been about people and connections; social networking and empowerment. Phase three, which feels like it is here, or almost here, will most likely be about connecting ‘stuff’* to the network to the people. Look at how technologies like iPhone (Apps) and syncing is connecting people to stuff much more easily. Nike+ is an early example, but still requires manual operations;

namely taking something out, plugging it in and clicking it.

I digress, more of this can be found in my short paper about Interactive Design (StevePrice_shortpaper.pdf).

I decided to show a selection of my (interactive/online) work spanning the last ten years. I have accompanied this within a chronological timeline, which also serves as a device to see how I have adapted and changed according to the various phases that online/

Whilst applying for my MA I was working with the (then) three-man team of State. Consisting of Philip O’Dwyer, Mark Breslin and Mark Hough. Whilst there I worked on projects for Playstation, Dreamcast and onedotzero.

However, my MA at Central Saint Martins was amongst other things a great way for me to start really challenging myself and my abilities. So I set about working in Flash.

The brief was simply to create a response to the theory of the Six Degrees of Separation, so I chose to animate mine, however badly it looks now, it was the beginning of my interest in interactive design.

We were required to present the governing body with our research for our individual MA dissertation and practical project. We were asked to present our findings to the MA course and our tutors in any way we felt suitable. I opted for an online version of a timeline documenting my work over the months.

The result was something that feels altogether vacant and difficult to read. But it was the first time I started inter grating flash in to HTML and framesets, and from that standpoint I am still proud that I got it to work. I was also the only one on my course to send a link to my entire class so that they could all review it. I also, at the time created my own blog and used that to document my work.

Egg: the internet bankHaving just graduated from the Masters at Central Saint Martins I worked on a project to produce a CDROM for the (then) internet bank Egg.

The project was typical of the era. The client wanted a CDROM to go out as part of a promotional Direct Marketing tool. They wanted a big intro-animation, lots of information, and text and sounds and rollovers and as much animation as you could possibly think of.

Presenting and selling this project to the board of the Prudential Bank was an enormous challenge, as was the build; there was one developer whose Director skills were, even by those days standards, quite sketchy.

The result was a CDROM that was a bit jerky in parts (depending on your processor speed), but it worked and worked well for the client.

Having been introduced to Flash coding by pier Mark Hough I tried my best to understand dynamics, and maths and script and... well, I decided at the end that it would be best to leave it to the professionals; i.e always employ someone else to do coding/programming.

Having dabbled with flash coding and thinking I was something new to the world of “target string variables” I set about creating a web presence for Plan-B Studio. I launched a holding page with had a looping, military style feel to it for reasons that escape me now.

However this then lead on to a more considered approach, albeit it rather web 1.0 looking.

“We are constantly complemented on our marketing material and I truly believe, the website particularly, has increased our national and international profile. The longevity of our relationship means that he truly understands our needs and budgets and acts accordingly with ease and humour.”June Swindell,Founder of salt.

Salt specialise in designing and producing individual textile patterns and blinds. I was approached by them in 2002 to design a website for them, along with a range of printed, promotional literature. The website simply showcased each project both private and commercial.

Since all of their work is about space, light and layers of textures; the web site followed the same colour palette as the rest of the re-branded stationary and promotional literature.

Produced in 2001 this site reflects the extent of the budget; next to nothing. The whole site was built by me using HTML, and was a little clumsy and impractical - but we live and learn.

Wild-Bunch was an independent film production and distribution company. They wanted a new site and they wanted it content-managed. CMS was then [2003] relatively expensive, but software programs such as ColdFusion made it possible to offer this as a product.

The result was, well, a site that was controlled by a ColdFusion built CMS. Anyone who knows that ColdFusion 1.0 was like knows that the site probably would be (if it were still live) a haggard old horse, but in 2002 it was the most affordable option for clients who couldn’t afford Mediasurface.

Critical Sales dealt with the business sector. Its core business was to help train and redevelop internal business strategies in order to increase the profit margins of companies such as PwC, KPMG and many more.

The identity needed to emphasise the idea of growth, network and above all Critical Sales on top.

The web site was developed to try and challenge the norm. The layout was different - the navigation was on the right of the page. The content centred, and all the information was fed from the hexagonal stack. The use of flash integrated with HTML framesets was (for me back then) really exciting, but primitive in todays expectations.

The actual site never saw the light of day because the client couldn’t find the budget.

This was a web site for a friend with no budget. A photographer whose only brief was that she wanted all her work to be on one page. So I created a strict grid in Flash and set to work. Once you click on a section, such as Reportage, you saw which images related to that section by the others being covered with blue. Click on one of those left and you could see it bigger. Simple.

Although an example of an early flash web site that although it had an exact loader, was clumsy and restrictive for updating.

There was very little call for anything too complicated with the build of this site. The nature of the site merely represented the clothing labels new range, and showcased this throughout the site.

Hard-nosed businessman (HNB) was a campaign created by Mother for Orange, The TV campaign (prior to launch) was represented online. Poke employed me to design the site with their team in-house.

The concept was to create a site that looked like an actual desktop that belonged to the HNB with quirky happenings, as well as relevant information to the campaign and product offerings.

One word: ‘Experiential’ was key throughout this project, and indeed was the first time I heard it. They wanted the essence of that game to be present so we decided to build a whole map taking it’s origins from the beginning of the game itself which was based around a school that becomes haunted; original(!).

The whole site was supposed to be a walk-through with ghosts snapping and appearing everywhere. The sound design was pivotal; but was lost on people in offices who have the sound turned off because of such sites!

This was a great example of a project that the client kept calling a ‘micro-site’ when in fact it was much, much, much bigger than that. The amount of interstitial animation between (tween) scenes was enough work to keep two animators busy for a month. We lived, and we learnt!

This site started a new visual style for Isokon, whilst taking into consideration their history born from the Bauhaus era. Using the subtly of gradients to create tonal changes, and spatial drawings that create a protraction of depth, space and pattern.

My main concern was to make sure that the development of the Isokon site was consistent within the existing brand identity whilst enhancing its visual communication. Ultimately making the process of actually viewing the furniture and content an easier and more stimulating experience.

Laurence King publishing was a long standing client of mine in the early years of my company. I worked on a whole range of projects including marketing strategy, promotion and book design.

I was asked to re-design their web site, but which would be built by there freelance IT consultant; who was incompetent. My vision was to have a very simple site, focusing on the core areas, and driving traffic to the key sections that would increase sales. The use of photography was to be much more random and less formal, but the relationship between the client and the developer broke down and this site took nearly a year to be launched, by which time funds and time had been wasted and we scrapped the site.

I was invited by unit9 to collaborate with them and Cake to design both a promotional micro-site and a viral game for Evian’s ‘Live Young’ campaign.

Apart from the campaign the objective of the game (which was timed with the general election) was to pelt politicians with snowballs inside the Houses of Parliament. You could choose which party you wished to be and the pelt all the opposing parties.

The supporting micro-site then tracked the scores and popularity using a very complicated system called the ‘Snow-o-meter’ - inspired by John Snow!

Together with Mark Hough we travelled North to the Arctic Circle to produce a web site for Norwegian artist, Sigrid Szetu. The site needed to focus simply on her work, her studio and the subsequent exhibitions that would be hosted there each year.

Whilst there was no brief as such we began the project with lots of discussions about the studio space, why Sigrid had chosen that particular part of the world, how she had come up with the design for the studio space itself and how it affects her in her work. It became apparent very quickly that the space, and the landscapes surrounding it needed to be at the core of the site.

The animation is taken from a 3-d lightwave render of the studio space. We then rendered a simple 360° degree rotation of just the window panels and then used those as masks in flash over images of Sigrids work and the views from her windows.

I was commissioned by unit9 to art direct and design seven features for the Sunday Times CD-ROM, The Month. Together with unit9, who produced the entire project we worked with Rory and Andrew from State of Emergence.

Each project ran for ten days. In that time we had to produce an fully interactive, flash built feature for the CD-ROM.

As well as conceptualising an approach, designing the four chapters of content I also produced a 60 second video edit for each feature, along with three subsequent interstitials.

The designs were then developed and animated in Flash and skillfully built by the team at unit9.

Collectively they were constantly challenging projects and only made possible due to the creative team involved, but more so the capabilities of unit9 for managing and producing such a demanding project in such a small amount of time.

This project never actually got released, but it was a huge amount of work that went in to the build-up for the release of Mike Skinners third studio album ‘The Hardest Way To Make an Easy Living’.

The build of this site was in mind from the conceptual stage. A huge landscape that could be scrolled around (left>right, vice versa). The landscape was design and created to reflect the lyrics from each track to focus on the theme of the album which was all about loosing your way and trying to pick up the pieces.

It was being built in flash, but a big push for this site was for incorporating user-generated content (UGC); getting them to submit stories, download and remix samples supplied by Mike, etc).

RedDot ClothingRed Dot like things to be comprehensive, subtle and (usually) to have hidden humour.

Given a blank canvas for designing any job, never mind a web site for a client like this, can be daunting. Eventually, after several coffees and cigarettes I devised this cunning plan.

Originally developed as a sneer at the art world I wanted to have a gallery space for RedDots previous clothes. Frames sprang to mind and then I thought about a gallery environment. I thought about one (pretentious) place in London’s east end. I went about creating the whole site to appear like an art gallery – where everything appears as an installation, a piece of art. I loved it, and thankfully so did Red Dot, which is always good.

“We have found it very difficult to find people to work with on Red Dot. As a general rule they either don’t get it at all, get it but can’t take it forward, or get it, could maybe take it forward but can’t get it together. Our experiences with Steve have been that he got it, moved it forward and all without any drama ... I’m not sure what this says about him but it’s been very good for us.”Kieron Hurley, Brand DirectorRed Dot Clothing

Enlisted by Cake to art direct and design this micro-site for Cointreau in aid of a photography exhibition at the Getty Images Gallery in London.

The purpose of the site was to promote the exhibition, but to also offer the chance for Cointreau to promote other key features of their ‘Cointreauversial’ campaign through interactive features of the site.

The design was primarily based on the basic layout of the Getty Gallery.

RedDot ClothingThe [then] forthcoming Spring/Summer 2007 collection was (loosely) based on a fictional character, William Samuel DeBon; created by RD. A old gent, a cad, a card, a complete bastard. Part of the old boy network’, an ex-pat who’d travelled, drank, slept and generally screwed his way around the world both in socially and business realms. Perfect for the basis of developing a concept for the holding site.

I designed what appears to be a desktop cladded in leather, upon which rests a journal an envelope of polaroids, and other references to Mr DeBon.

The journal is a collection of his findings/stealings from his recent trips abroad, each page drawing signifcant inspiration for a new garment or print for the new SS07 collection.

HSBC InvestmentsI was approached by HSBC Investments to develop an online viral game. Now I know my strengths and backend development is not one of them. So I approach unit9 to produce and develop the game with me as creative director.

The game was launched to coincide with a new product called OpenFunds. Aimed primarily at the IFA (Independent Financial Advisor) market and in-line with their offline campaign - based on the IFA marketplace being like a monster that is out of control.

We called our game ‘The Office Escape’, set in one office, but over three levels you have to slay as many monsters (Dracula, Mummy and Frankenstein) to escape using office items - staplers, mugs, photo-frames.

WhatIf InnovationThis was a ‘promo-site’ to compliment the

launch of a book by Chris Barez-Brown called ‘How to have Kick-Ass Ideas’. All about self-motivation, inspiration and where to find it.

It needed to be simple, easy to use and navigate, but they also needed the ability for visitors to the site to post their own suggestions and thoughts.

The design of the site embraced and brought to life some of the artwork from the book in flash banners.

The success of the site has meant that the US launch of the book is going to promote the site there too.

Moreover the site was the first (for me) to be more focused on encouraging and utilising user content sent to the site.

“Our new site is exactly what we wanted. It’s clean, simple and perfectly executed to marry with our stationary and new branding created by Steve. Our new site is also fully content-managed. Before we were updating our site on a monthly, which was not always convenient or cost effective. Now we are able to look after our own site and update it as and when we need to. The CMS is easy to use and we have two or three people in the office who manage it.”

Neil Chivers, Operations DirectorLD Communications

LD CommunicationsI designed a new logo and range of stationary for LD. The Business cards have a clear foil applied to the logo to give it a bit more richness. The bottom-right-hand corner of the business cards, stickers and compliment slips all echoed the curve of the new LD logo.

LD also needed a new site, but more specifically they wanted complete control over it and the management of the content.

Aside from wanting to have a fresher looking site, the new site is simple, easy to use and extremely dynamic.

Utilising a custom built CMS software there are some really intuitive features, for example, the homepage randomly selects three various sizes of images from the archive of clients. Meaning that the homepage is never the same twice.

Because they are a Music PR company the site really just needed to be very simple. It also has a secure area for press releases. ArisingArtist

“Jobsgopublic goes from strength to strength as the latest figures from an independent audit of web traffic for September 2007 recorded the biggest leap yet in unique visitor numbers now attracting over 400,000 unique visitors a month.”www.prlog.org, Jan 22nd 2008

jobsgopublic.comjobsgopublic (JGP) is a public sector recruitment web site who were in dire need of a refreshed user-interface design for their site. They wanted a new site designed with an emphasis on getting more people to register, but also to enhance the whole user experience.

I worked with JGP to restructure the information architecture, layout, starting by moving all advertising to the same place (right) and below the branding/navigation. I introduced a more impactful use of photography with ‘feature’ panels. Making the whole site much more attractive, whilst not being ‘too heavy’. Using a mixture of serif fonts for headings and navigation (set in lowercase) also helps to create a much less informal environment.

“If Steve suggests that your company needs a complete design over-haul then I’d strongly suggest listening tohim – As a company in a very saturated marketPokerTrillion.com needed to stand out from the rest, and I’ll always remember a few words spoken by Steve when we first sat down with him, ‘no poker site has ever won a design award, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen.’Steve ‘got it’ straight away.”

Andrew PyrahCEO, PokerTrillion

This site is really just a portal for Poker Trillion to get players to download their game. Nothing more, nothing less.

This site is not that pretty, it’s simple beyond belief. It doesn’t scream at you and it doesn’t necessarily look like a typical online poker site*. Good. That is the point.

To target the more sophisticated poker players - the high rollers, the discerning players Poker Trillion needed to position themselves accordingly. Every poker site you go on is predominantly green, it has cards somewhere, or poker chips - all very original.

It was important for Breast Friends web site to reflect the product and the owners Norwegian heritage.

The design needed to create an air of calm but also start to develop the whole essence of the brand which is about being a ‘breast friend’ to those nursing mothers whose breastfeeding is a cause for discomfort.

If you have no kids, or don’t know of anyone that does then there is a good chance this site will not be of any use, but if you do, or you are a breastfeeding mother whose suffering as a result then go to this site, buy the shells and there is a very good chance your sore nipples will be sore no more.

I love this company, the help, advice and support it will offer to women who take the brave, but essential choice to breast feed.

I was enlisted to re-design the web site for Arising Artist. Their old site was a mishmash of heavy colours, too much text an tired repetitive layout and design.

I stepped in a stripped the whole site back. I minimised the use of colour, but made the colours much flatter and brighter.

I encourage more space and less text. Simple and easy navigation. Concise and clear copy that was easier on the eye.

Creating a clear, but strict grid enables a much easier level of consistency and usability, along with restricted colour palette and easier to read copy.

“With Steve and Mei providing the actual stage, and one of the buildings we were really happy when Steve also produced the web site. Our expectations were no where near what he designed for us and we believe we have an awesome site which fits the nature of the festival, whilst also celebrating the place and the people. Brilliant!”Rune Mikkelborg, Event organiser

Nyksund is a small, formerly abandoned island in the North of Norway. What it lacks in size it makes up for in a vibrant mix of music, artistic and cultural diversity.

With a population of around fourteen it is in a remote but beautiful part of the world.

This year was the third, and biggest (yet) music/storytelling/art festival and I worked with the organisers to design the site. Built by a local developer I helped to try and ‘put them on the map’ so to speak.

I made photographs of the island a focus and utilised the Tilt Shifter Maker tool to set the photos in an almost model village style setup; as it sometimes feels like this when there.

“From day one I’ve never had any concerns about working with Steve. He has a very calming, relaxed approach and has consistently managed to delivery great design and now a great web site. But more than that he’s very open to discussing issues, thoughts and concerns which is a refreshing change to most designers.”Paul Baptiste, Bluebird

I was contracted by The Shop at Bluebird on London’s Kings Road to develop an entirely new online strategy and site design. The brief was crafted out of lots of meetings between the manager and myself.

It soon became clear that not only did they want to manage the content, but also have something that was very immediate-feeling. Something blog-like, but more refined.

I bought in my trusted technical Partner Nico Nuzacci (in Sweden) to help realise the projects potential, and the result is a web site created to allow the shop to present only the items that are the ‘hottest’ for that day, week or month. Each area of the shop has it’s own blog-like status and allows for each section to update itself.
