Study the uses of light in architecture.

Explore the realm of what I have come to describe as “unveiling” in architecture.

Explore the essence of a moment in terms of eastern philosophical thought such as Zen Buddhism as well as through the contemporary scientific studies by Professor Ellan Lager.

Is the use of light and associated elements such as shadow, lines of sight, and the rendering of form establishing or aiding in the making of moments as I have defined them?

Does the architectural equivalent of unveiling present itself as a means to moment making?

Does materiality play a role in how the architecture is perceived?

Right now, more so than at other times in history, we are in need of something that reminds us all of our connection to one another and a purpose to look beyond those things that make us appear different. We should also be reminded of our own personal capacity and responsibility to be an agent for change and to engage rather than just float through our daily lives.

For this reason, I propose an architecture of the sublime within a place of gathering where one feels a sense of connection and engagement to fellow assembly members.

Creating moments and connections among a group of people through the presence of architecture is possible because the sublime in architecture is in the realm of conscious awareness. If a stone is dropped to the earth, it will fall at the same rate of speed and acceleration whether a person is there to witness it or not. The stone’s fall is absolute. In terms of architecture: the structure that is part of architecture is present whether we are there to perceive it or not, however that which makes it architectural is in the realm of perception and is not absolute. If we cease to exist, so to will architecture. Because architecture lies within our hearts and minds, it has the ability to significantly touch our lives. To experience architecture, and the sublime specifically, is then best described as the making of moments: moments of reflection, awe, and heightened awareness for example. To experience these moments is to experience a jolt from one’s normal state and makes for an opportunity to receive and experience something significant. To experience this making of moments among others is to experience kinship. To experience kinship among the many is to be reminded of the things that bind us together. The idea of assembly, a “moment,” and the kinship that is consequently established has its roots in the revelation moment that Louis Kahn had with respect to the National Assembly Building in Dhaka, Bangladesh. In his own words: “This came simply from the realization that assembly is of a transcendent nature. Men came to assemble to touch the spirit of commonness, and I thought this must be expressible.”

Architecture has the ability to impart these “moments” in many ways however I will explore them through three different means. Light, unavailing, and the juxtaposition of materials. Light, simply, is what renders architecture. Without light, architecture does not again exist. Because light is fundamental to architecture, it has the fundamental capacity to bring order, form, and clarity to an architectural intervention. The unveiling of architecture is quite different: architecture itself expresses a change. Unveiling takes place in architecture when something that was not fully comprehended or understood is at once relayed. It can happen when one experiences an architectural threshold or a change from compression to expansion. Finally, architecture has the capacity to incite “moments” through the juxtaposition of materials, textures, and forms. These three means of exploration all work together to establish the architectural makings of significant moments of the sublime.
