SELFIEAm I a Leader?

Leadership is a process of influence. Anytime you seek to influence the thinking, behavior, or development of people in their personal or professional lives you are taking on the role of leader.SELFIEA mother with a child at any time of dayA police officer who risks alienation to confront a moral failureA corporate executive who rejects offers of insider information to gain a competitive edgeA SOG Team Leader who orders his team into harms way to save a lifeAn instructor who excites the curiosity in the minds of her recruitsA medic who patiently handles the anger of a stroke victimA dictator who hoards millions of dollars while his citizens are starvingA company officer who takes an unpopular stand based on principleA terminally ill colleague who demonstrates grace, confidence, courage, and calm to anxious loved onesA chief officer who fails to confront rule violations by his political favoriteAre all these people leaders?SELFIESolo Selfie vs. Leadership Selfie

SELFIEThe Two Roles of Servant Leadership

A visionary role setting the course and the destinationAn implementation role doing things right with a focus on servingLife leadership roles, especially those within department families, can at times be our most challenging leadership assignments. Among other things, families serve as a laboratory for teaching us how to apologize and ask for forgiveness. By virtue of our close relationships, we see one another at our best and at our worst. Department members walk with us shaping our heart, head, hands, and habits to be serve. How can I model humility, honesty, and forgiveness within my department?

The leaders becomes a servant of the vision, by serving the people who are being asked to act according to the vision and accomplish the goals.SELFIEIn the context of leadership, being sure of my individual purpose in relationship to my influence on other people must include serving their best interests or it becomes manipulation and exploitation, the absolute opposite of servant leadership.
