P R I N C I P A L ’ S M E S S A G E :
As we enter the holiday season, we should be mindful of how blessed we are each and every day. Please take time over the holiday season to spend with your family. Read a good book, play a fun game, or even just take the time to sit and listen to how much your child has grown since the start of the school year. The staff here at Stevenson School would like to wish you and your family a safe, joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year! Merry Christmas!!

Absent / Tardy
If your child is absent or will be tardy, call the office by 9:30am. The absence is unexcused if the office does not receive a phone call on or before the day of the absence. Attendance is vital for the learning your child achieves and also has an impact on the funding received by our district from the state.
Tardy reminder: Students need to be in their classrooms by 9:00am so they are not counted as tardy. A student who arrives after 9:00a is tardy even if a parent calls to let us know he/she will be late. Some reasons absences/tardies are not excused:
Visiting relatives, on vacation or extending the weekend—absences are unexcused
If a child is absent and the school was not contacted—absences are unexcused
If a child misses the bus or the family car doesn’t work—absences are unexcused
Leaving school early without medical cause—absences are unexcused
Getting hair done, baby-sitting siblings or oversleeping—absences are unexcused
More information regarding attendance and absences can be found on pages 31-33 of the District 87 Elementary Student Handbook.
Important Message for Parents
To minimize disruptions to instruction, we need your help! The most significant reasons
for class interruptions each day are students arriving late, calling students down for early
dismissal and announcing changes of transportation. We understand that some
appointments and emergency changes are necessary and cannot always be avoided,
but please make every effort to make appointments after school hours and send written
communication to school with your child for any transportation changes.
If you need to leave a message with your child, please be sure to call before 3:00p. After
that time, no messages can be delivered to students.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this important matter!

News from the Library Media Center
The Monarch Award:
The Bluestem Award:
During their LMC time each week,
kindergarten through second grade
classes are listening to one of the
Monarch Award Nominee books.
Once we have read and completed
activities with each of the 20 books
on the nominee list, students will
vote for their favorite. Our K-2 stu-
dent votes will be submitted to the
official committee by March 15th.
Be sure to ask your child about their
favorite Monarch nominee book so
far.
The 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students
also have award books they are read-
ing in preparation for voting that will
take place by March 15th. The
Bluestem Award also has a list of 20
books; however, not all of them will
be read aloud to the students since
most of them are chapter books. To
be eligible to vote, students must
read and take Reading Counts quiz-
zes on at least five of the books from
the master list. Look for the
Bluestem sticker on the spine label of
the books your child is bringing home
from the library and ask them how
many of the 20 books they have read
so far.
Student Council
Caring Cart Food Drive:
The Student Council sponsored the Caring Cart Food Drive in November. Stevenson students and staff donated several boxes of non-
perishable food items again this year. Thank you so much to everyone who donated over 500 items to a great cause.
Mitten & Glove Donations:
Starting the first week of December, Student Council members will be encouraging the students of Stevenson to contribute mittens or gloves to the tree
in the office. These donations of new mittens and gloves will be used for Stevenson students who do not have anything to keep their hands warm during
the cold winter months. This tree will stay up through February. Any donations may be sent to the school office. Hats are not needed.
If your child needs a pair of mittens or gloves, please send a note to the Stevenson office and your child will be permitted to pick one pair this school
year.
Thank you,
Mrs. Brenwall and Mrs. Cottrell

Twelve Health and Safety Tips for the Holidays
Give the gift of health and safety to yourself and others by following these holiday tips. 1. Wash hands often to keep yourself from spreading germs and getting sick. Wash your hands with soap and clean running water for
at least 20 seconds. Here’s a quick video from youtube on proper hand washing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5qovHD_kjQ 2. Bundle up to stay dry and warm. Wear appropr iate outdoor clothing: layers of light, warm clothing; mittens; hats; scarves; and waterproof boots. 3. Manage stress. Don' t overcommit yourself and prevent holiday anxiety and pressure. Get enough sleep. 4. Don't drink and drive or let others drink and drive. Whenever anyone dr ives drunk, they put everyone on the road in danger . 5. Be smoke-free. Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke. There is NO safe amount of tobacco or secondhand smoke. Breathing even a little secondhand smoke can be dangerous. 6. Fasten seat belts while dr iving or r iding in a motor vehicle. Always buckle your child in the car using a child safety seat, booster seat, or seat belt according to his/ her height, weight, and age. Use a seat belt on every trip, no matter how short the trip. 7. Get exams and screenings. Ask what exams you need and when to get them. Update your personal and family history. 8. Get your vaccinations, which help prevent diseases and save lives. 9. Monitor the children. Keep potentially dangerous toys, food, dr inks, household items, and other objects out of kids' r each. Dress warmly for outdoor activities. Develop and reinforce rules about acceptable and safe behaviors including electronic media. 10. Practice fire safety. Most residential fires occur dur ing the winter months, so be careful to never leave fireplaces, space heaters, stoves, or candles unattended. Have an emergency plan and practice it regularly. 11. Prepare food safely. Remember these simple steps: wash hands and surfaces often, avoid cross-contamination, cook foods to proper temperatures, and refrigerate promptly. 12. Eat healthy, and get moving. Eat fruits and vegetables. Limit your por tion sizes and foods high in fat, salt and sugar . Be active for at least 2½ hours a week and help kids and teens be active for at least 1 hour a day.

Kitchen Chat We would like to remind everyone that breakfast starts at 8:30 a.m. Students who walk or get a ride (other than bus riders) need to
arrive before 8:50. At 8:50 a.m. the choice is a sack breakfast that can be eaten in the classroom. We encourage everyone to arrive
early so that they may have a choice for breakfast.
Here is an easy recipe for some quality baking time while the kids are home over winter break:
Peanut butter cookies
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, mix the 3 ingredients well in a medium size bowl (can be mixed by hand or with an electric
mixer). Roll dough into balls. Take a fork and flatten the dough-mark with a crisscross pattern. Bake 8-10 minutes. Let cool and
enjoy!
Have a wonderful and safe winter break. See you in January!

Please dress your children appropriately for cold weather. Remember we are outside at recess if the wind chill is 20 degrees or above. Be sure to mark your child’s name on
their winter clothing.
In the event of severe winter weather WJBC is the official radio station that will announce school closings. Parents
should listen to WJBC 1230 AM starting at 6:00am or log on to the WJBC website to find out if school is closed.
You should also receive a call from the District 87 School Reach System informing you of any school closures. Please
make sure the office has your correct phone numbers. Thank you!
