1 CAT STEVENS has been added to the Isle of Wight Festival bill next week - his third festival appearance in six weeks. Immediately after his senvtiorial performance at the recen;. Plumpton Festival he was booked for last week's Yorkshire Folk, Blues and Jazz Festival at Krumpton and then, later on, he was added to the Isle of Wight Festival. Meanwhile, Cat himself is still preparing his next album, 'Tea For The Tillerman', which is scheduled for an October release. The album includes Cat's version of 'Wild World' -- one of his own songs which has recently been recorded as a single by Jimmy Cliff. On Monday Cat flew to Munich to complete the dubbing for the soundtrack he has written to Jane Asher's latest film, 'Deep -End', directed by the Polish film-maker Jerczy Sxomolvski. Cat was chosen to write the film track on the strength of his 'Mona Bone Jakon. album. The film's debut will be at the Venice Film Festival later this year. FREE... are postponing an American tour this year - because the group want to complete their European dates.

Free were due to go to America later this year, where their single, 'All Right Now' shows signs of becoming ahit - it has already reached the Top Ten in a number of cities and in Cleveland, Ohio, last week, for instance, itsold ten thousand copies in one morning.

But because of Free's European commitments the group have decided to tour America in the New Year. Thegroup will be appearing at nermany, Copenhagen, and Sweden during November and Switzerland and Italyduring December.

Betore that, however, the group will be making a series of concert appearances in Britain, during Septembercoupled with other Island Records acts. The first will be at Croydon's Fairfield Hall on September 13, when thegroup will be recording a live album with Mott The Hoople.

WANTED-A NEW RADIO

MESSIAH!THE GOVERNMENT'S decision to give thego-ahead to the BBC's 20 new local stations hasmade some commercial radio operators thinkagain. Should they gamble and try to run theirstations in opposition to the BBC ... or shouldthey go for the less populated areas at presentnot served by local radio?

Confirmation of a new batch of BBC stationsmeans that all is now 'go' for London, Liverpooland Birmingham. London's local radio opens inOctober.

The format for the station will be "sweetmusic" and the London station will no doubt filla great gap in the U.K. radio set-up. Several ofthe existing BBC stations have already proved tobe very popular indeed.

But one problem remains. The stations willcontinue to broadcast on VHF (London on 96Megs). A big disadvantage with VHF is that thelocal radio planners will not be able to offerup-to-date road information to motorists ...because most car radios are not equipped withFM/AM receivers. Still, we await 'Radio London'- and the other stations - with interest ...

What is happening to RNI ? This is thequestion many Record Mirror readers are askingin their letters. The programmes, say your letters,are getting boring and the station is playing thesame old records all the time. A boring format?

"I think its about time RNI got down to someserious real programmes, not just the usual 21hours of churning out the same old stuff they'redoing at the moment," writes Colin Martin of104 Beach Road, Scratby, Gt Yarmouth.

"Even the dee-jays are sounding mostly alike- we've missed the sparkling voice of Roger Daylivening up breakfast with hisnever -know -what -to -expect type of show. Butnow RNI is gradually slipping - it's up to thestation's programmers to get down and organiseprogrammes that appeal to everyone and stopconcentrating on idle chat, and going off the airevery few days to mess about with transmitters,"continues Colin.

"RNI call themselves the 'sound of Europe'.The station has gone from good to bad."

Fairly strong criticism - and I've receivedquite a few letters saying the same thing. I

reprinted this letter in full because at one timeColin Martin was one of RNI's greatest fans. He'swritten to "Airwaves" at least half a dozen timeswith praise for the station.

It seems a great shame that so many listenerswho stuck with the station throughout the'jamming' period should now.get disenchanted, I

think that some of RNI's early vitality has beenMissing in recent weeks - but it is still animportant and entertaining station.

NEWS - growing lads no longer want to beengine drivers when they grow up - what wereengines anyway? The top of the youthemployment pops is undoubtedly the disc jockeyvacancy.

Letters arrive by the score at RadioLuxembourg each week from young chaps, andladies too - they write from all over the countryto get behind the 208 microphone and 'sock it tous from the Grand Duchy'.

The letters usually ask "How do I get started?- cause given the chance I know I'd be great."Well, two years ago I would not haverecommended anyone to seriously pursue a careeras a DJ in this country. There were shortcontracts, constant changes of DJ's who failed toband together for the good of their profession asa whole, but watched as colleagues were droppedand forgotten by producers. Now the RadioRevolution is gathering force and openings willoccur. You may have to start in Wigan and workyour way towards London town and the pluggerslunches but at least the opportunities will bethere. So if you want to be DJ then this is whatyou have to do:

(1) Get a tape recorder and practise till yoursick of the sound of your own voice. Try yourhand at programmes, interviews, commercialreading and newscasting. Until you are good in allthose areas you won't be saleable property to a

station.(2) Read a good quality newspaper everyday.

It's no good knowing where Diana Ross concealsa birthmark - or the name of Stevie Wonder'safter shave. You'll get all those bits and piecesfrom pop papers and whilst they are jollyinteresting in their own way - the emphasis thesedays is swinging towards news and current affairs.

I never thought that it was necessary to be anall rounder and used to concentrate on pops andmusic information till one night whilst I wasbroadcasting in Luxembourg doing 'FridayRequests' (now sadly departed) the Secretaryrushed in to say that President Kennedy had beenshot and would I stop playing pop music, make

WHEN RINGO STARR arrived in Nashvilleto record his country album, Pete Drake,steel guitar player and producer who set upthe session, had the commercial airlinertaxi right across the airfield to a remotecorner in order to whisk Ringo away fromover enthusiastic fans. No report aboutwhat the rest of the passengers thought.

Apparently when Ringo arrived in thestudio and faced all the Nashvillepickers and pluckers, he was very nervous,more so than at a normal Beatle session.DJ Fontana there and _Scotty Mooreowned part of the studio so there were alot of Elvis connections going around.

Ringo spent time in his room learningthe songs, didn't see much of Nashville, butmade a trip to a farm owned by rockgroup Mother Earth for a photo session. Heromped around for the photographer butconfessed himself "very nervous" about thepossibility of snakes lurking around.

As a result of teaching Ringo the songs,writer musican, Sorrels Pickard now has,apparently, an Apple contract.LESS PEOPLE than expected - around20,000 -turned up for the 12 hour SummerFestival for Peace at Shea Stadium in NewYork. Highlight was a surprise appearanceof a very together Janis Joplin. The otherbig New York festival, Powder Ridge, wascancelled through official pressure, but30,000 kids still turned up to do theWoodstock Generation bit. Despite threatsof fines and imprisonment if theyappeared, Melanie showed up to sing to thecrowd.

Odd twist: B. B. King says that he isnow noticing more Black kids in hisaudiences. He says that until recently whenhe played gigs like the Fillmores or otherrock venues, his audience would be allwhite, all either college or hippie. NowBlack teenagers are coming back to theblues, says B. B. Their blues - you don'thave to add.

Try somenewsreading on the tape, also do a promotionspot for another show later in the day and readthe odd request card.

Auditions do work. The majority of the 208record spinners came to us this way but makesure your work is good and that you're notrushing in too quickly. Also remember that yourlife span is limited at the microphone till you areprepared to expand as a broadcaster, unless youare a 'genius' like Jimmy Savile and I use theword 'genius' in its most sincere sense. Here is aman who has adapted his style and moves withthe times - he's still around, very much with hisfinger on the pop pulse. Others of his generationare loosing a little of their glitter.P.S. When you burst upon the radio scene bringsomething fresh and original with you. We allneed a new Messiah - perhaps it's you?

Stevie andthe drumsthat died!FADING OUT of the public eye is a hard thing to endure for those who achieve fame, but whatof those who are heard or seen, but never credited? The technicians, bit actors - and sessionmen. Pop's unsung heroes.

Stevie Wonder knew Benny Benjamin was one of those. Benny was a drummer and hisexceptional rhythms provided the backbone for many a Tamla-Motown hit. Benny, however, wasnever billed on a record; he just played on, making hit after hit until he died. A lot of people inthe Motown organisation were v

FLOWER -POWER BACK -LASHERIC CLAPTON in the guise ofDerek and the Dominoes launchedhis tour of British clubs earlier thismonth. Now he's been joined fornine concerts by ... none otherthan Brett Marvin And TheThunderbolts.

Which makes an incredible bill:Derek And The Dominoes withBrett Marvin And TheThunderbolts.

The Dominoes we already knowabout. Formed by Eric Claptonaround the old backing band usedby Delaney And Bonnie, they'vedecided on touring the outerregions of the British Isles insteadof doing the super -star bit ofplaying at only London's RoyalAlbert Hall.

But Brett Marvin And TheThunderbolts? The name isreminiscent of those endless rock'n' roll revivalist groups completewith the Burton's tailored drapesand the slicked hair.

Only it ain't like that.

Regionaldifferences

Now B. Marvin And TheThunderbolts are a blues band.With one or two regionaldifferences - like, for instance, azobstick and tin cans.

Individually, the line-up is PeteGibson (trombone, violin, kazoo,whistles, tin cans, vocals); GrahamHine (slide guitar, vocals); JimPitts (guitar, mandolin, harmonica,vocals); John Lewis (piano,vocals); John Randall (washboard);Keith Trussell (zobstick,percussion).

Pete Gibson was yet anotherstudent who came up through

BRETT MARVIN and the THUNDERBOLTSLiverpool College of Art - alongwith John Lennon and a millionother people who have since foundfame and fortune.

He explained how theThunderbolts came about: "Westarted two and a half years ago atCrawley new town. I was thendoing a solo act on the folk sceneand I knew Graham and Keithfrom teaching them art at theirschool. And one night they turnedup at the East Grinstead folk clubwith an eight watt amplifier and azobstick and blew right into'Hoochie Coochie Man'. It was anincredible sight - the secondnumber they had to stop half waythrough because they's tiredthemselves out."

"Anyway, the next week theywere all playing at Crawley and Ijoined up with them. So, sincethen we've been together withJohn Lewis joining much later."

"The name was born against

the flower power trend that washappening at the time. Originallywe were in a pub and Graham'sgirl friend started making up sillynames for the groUp and the nameBrett Marvin And TheThunderbolts was graduallyevolved."

The band worked around theclub circuit, building up asubstantial following with theirgood-time approach to the blues.Two of the people who heard theband were Jo -Ann and Dave Kelly- two of the most influential ofthe younger generation of Britishblues exponents.

For instance. Pete Gibson wasat the Slade College of Art inLondon completing a

post -graduate research course onlight and sound. "I realised thatbefore I could get to experimentalthings it would be better if I made

a documentary, and as my twoloves were music and film, I'd liketo make a film of a musician.

"Anyway, we went to see JohnMayall who eventually gave us thego ahead. So for about a year wefollowed him about filming himand his bands. On film we've gotJohn McVie, Eric Clapton, PeterGreen, Mick Taylor, JohnnyAlmond, Jon Mark, Colin Allenand Aynsley Dunbar. In fact wefollowed him through from hisLaurel Canyon band to 'TurningPoint'.

"We eventually decided to callthe film 'Turning Point' and I

hope it gives an honest portrait ofthe man.

Fantastic"Mayall was fantastic to us. We

travelled with the band and theylugged all our gear along withtheirs. All very enjoyable, althoughthere obviously must have beensome conflict of interest betweenmy film work and Brett MarvinAnd The Thunderbolts. But therest of the boys understood what I

was trying to do and they werevery tolerant.

"It's funny really, because wewouldn't be where we are now ifit wasn't for that film."

One of Mayall's road managersrealised that Pete was also in band."I'd never pushed the . bandbecause of the film," Petecomments, "because I'd obviouslynever wanted anyone to feel I wasmuscling in as a musician becauseof the film. But, anyway, JohnGunnell from Stigwood's was toldabout us.

"He came and heard us andnow we are with Stigwoods."

Pete describes the band's styleas: "blues inspired good timemusic, with interests from thebasic blues right through to theclassics."

Which covers a lot of ground. Itshould be quite a bill - DerekAnd The Dominoes with BrettMarvin and the Thunderbolts.

release LPTHE BEACH BOYS collected best recordings are to be issued in a specialrush -release album from EMI next weekend. Sixteen tracks - all of themhits in either the U.S. or UK - and all in stereo.

The album - "The Beach Boys Greatest Hits" - is being issued by EMIfollowing the success with the group's last single "Cottonfields" (includedon the LP).

But the Beach Boys futurerecording activities are stillundecided. It is not known whichUK company the group will tie inwith, but it is virtually certain theywill have a new album and single onrelease in time for their Europeantour which includes dates atSheffield and Stockton at the endof November, RM understands.

The group may also undertaketwo or more London concertsduring the visit at the end ofNovember or early December.

The "Greatest Hits" album -the group's first UK offering since"20-20" (with the exception of twobudget LP's) - will be issued onCapitol ST 21628.

Meanwhile, his new album,'Mad Dogs And Englishmen', - hisfirst on the A&M label - is to be.released on September 11. Thealbum is a live recording of theCocker entourage in America, andalthough he has now disbandedthe Mad Dogs and Englishmengroup, he is likely to bring overside -men Chris Stainton and LeonRussell for the European tour.

TOOMORROW - the latest Don Kirshner discovery - are now recordingfor MAM and their future releases will be issued here by Decca.Toomorrow's new single, produced by Bruce Welch of the Shadows, isreleased this weekend.

And the group will be replacing their drummer, Karl Chambers, whoquit the act last month. An announcement about the new member isexpected in September.

THE ISLE Of Wight Festival hasbeen extended to five days to takein all the new additions to the bill.

The Festival now starts onWednesday with the Groundhogs,Judas Jump, Rosely Sorrels, theAmerican folk -singer KrisKristophoson and, by Bob Dylan'sspecial request, Kathy Smith.

On Thursday, Tony Jae Whitetops the bill, followed by theLiverpool Scene, Supertramp,Cactus and Black Widow.

Meanwhile, the whole Festivalwill be the subject of a full-lengthcolour feature film by Americandirector, Murray Lerner, whomade the prize-winning film,'Festival'. Also involved in the filmwill be Jo Durden-Smith, thetelevision director responsible for'Johnny Cash At San Quentin' and'Stones In The Park'.

The Isle Of Wight film willcover the preparation of theFestival - including the views ofthe local inhabitants opposed to it- as well at the actual musicitself.

*The Festival's organiser RonFoulk this week issued thefollowing statement about theMoody Blues withdrawal from theevent: "The Moody Blues madedemands over their billing whichwe did not consider reasonable.They refused to be listed beneathparticularly importantinternational artists like Joan Baez,Jimi Hendrix, Leonard Cohen andJethro Tull. I had a telegram fromthe Moody Blues' agent sayingthat the group would not agree tothe billing we were prepared togive."

NEWS IN BRIEFBRITISH COUNTRY Music Association are holding a CountryMusic Festival at Islington Town Hall on September 12th. Artistsappearing include Orange Blossom Sound, Little Ginny and theNew Ragged Company.

One of Cilia Black's next series of "Cilia" shows for BBC TVwill be a spectacular intended for showing in America as well asBritain. Cilia is also due to appear on a Rolf Harris BBC TVspecial in October when she will sing in German for the first time.This show will be shown in Germany as well as in Britain.

Elton John leaves for his American tour today (Friday). Whilein America he will appear in Los Angeles, San Francisco andPhilmore East. He returns to England on September 15th to startwork on a new album.

Ember are releasing a new LP titled "A Drop Of The HardStuff." Tracks include "Soul Serenade" by King Curtis, Do TheWalk" by The Checkmates Ltd. and "Call Me Lightnin" by TheGood Vibrations.

The Decca single is 'WithoutYour Love' and the disc quicklyfollows the unsuccessfulRCA -Victor release 'You're MyBaby Now'.

It appears that the group's discswill no longer be issued by RCA -except for the debut Toomorrowalbum, which is in line forSeptember release. Toomorrow hasa new contract with MAM - thecompany which handles TomJones and Engelbert Humperdinck- and the new release is the firstToomorrow disc under the newdeal.

The group hit the UK marketin July in a blaze of national andmusic press publicity. They are thelatest "discovery" from DonKrishner (who is responsible forthe Monkees and the Archies) andfilm producer Harry Saltzman.

NEW SIGNINGSRAYMOND FROGGATT has beensigned by Bell on a world-widebasis. The deal, negotiated byEuropean manager Dick Leahy, isfor three years. The group waspreviously with Polydor.

And RCA has signed the ChrisBarber band and has released itsfirst single next week. Formerlywith the now defunct Marmaladelabel, Barber has recorded theJames Taylor song 'Fine Rain'.

A NEW Rolling Stones LP - their 14th - is about to be released byDecca, although the group's contract with the company has now expired.

Decca have now confirmed that the album, 'Get Your Ya Yas Out'will be issued this summer. It is expected to be available in the next twoor three weeks. Catalogue number will be SKL 5065. The LP wasrecorded about a year ago in America during a concert which was alsofilmed and is therefore available to Decca.

"There is no significance to there I ease ," commented Decca'smanaging director, WilliamTownsley, when asked if therelease indicated the beginning ofa new association between Deccaand the Rolling Stones.

However, asked if the groupwere in arrears in fulfilling itsproduct guaranteed under the oldcontract, Townsley replied: "Youcould be right at that."

Although the Stones willlaunch their own label here, it is

still not known who will distributetheir new product. News of thealbum, 'Get Your Ya Yas Out' wasreported in Record Mirror on July26.

The album will be the first newproduct from the group since the'Let It Bleed' LP was issued onDecca in November last year.

BluesBenefit

THE NATIONAL Blues Federationare holding a benefit concert atLondon's 100 Club in order topay off outstanding debts causedby a couple of unprofitable tours.

Playing at the concert, onAugust 25, will be Peter Green,Dave Kelly, Duster Bennett,Burning Sunflower and ErrolDixon.

The Federation's deficit is£250. Commented the secretary,Chris Trimming: "It may notsound a lot, but when you operateon a shoestring like us, it is aconsiderable amount of money."

Burrito BrosFor UK Tour

AMERICAN GROUP the FlyingBurrito Brothers are to tourBritain from November 20th.

The group will fly in to appearat a London venue (either theRoyal Festival Hall or theLyceum) on November 20th andthen begin their tour. Britishgroup Hard Meat will tour withthem. Confirmed dates are:November 23rd Birmingham TownHall; 24th Manchester Free TradeHall; 25th Newcastle City Hall;27th Bristol Colston Hall.

From there, the groups will flyto a concert in Paris and on to doa European tour. They will beplaying in Germany, Copenhagen,Gottenburg, Stocholm and Oslo,finishing on December 12th.

THE SOFT Machine's historicappearance at one of last week'sPromenade concerts - they werethe first pop group to perform atthe Proms - will be shown on theBBC 1 'Omnibus' programme onSunday.

Review:SOFT MACHINEFORTY MINUTES of non-stop music making by one four -man popgroup might well be enough to make even the most pop -consciousperson a trifle aprehensive. But Soft Machine's 40 -minutes longperformance as part of a Henry Wood Promenade Concert at the RoyalAlbert Hall last Thursday was certainly no disappointment. There wasnever a minute wasted.

The programme notes made no mention at all of the title of SoftM.4Fhine's intriguing and lengthy party piece (nor its composer). As thegroup itself made no verbal reference to the composition, perhaps weweren't meant to know anyway.

Still, title or not, the music itself was hugely successful. Sometimesturbulebt, sometimes placid - always interesting - the unnamed pieceebbed and flowed with startling effectiveness. Tempos and moodschanged continuously. The whole piece had the effect of being, at oneand the same time, complex and simple.

The individual members of Soft Machine - Elton Dean(alto-saxophone/saxella) Mike Rutledge (organ), Hugh Hopper (bass),and Robert Wyatt (drums) - are superb musicians. But though theirindividual efforts were never less than interesting, their contributions tothe concept of the group itself were most rewarding.

Someone should have recorded this - it is pretty doubtful that SoftMachine has ever performed so well, sounded as well, and contributed asmuch.

Pre -interval proceedings concentrated on the avant-garde in classicalmusic. The music results overall ranged from the slightly tedious(American Terry Riley's Keyboard Studies performed by Andrew Powell,Robin Thompson (amplified pianos), Roger Smalley (electronic organ)and Mike Rutlege (organ) to the unusual and rewarding (Tim Souster'sTriple Music II, performed by three orchestras under three differentconductors and totalling 103 musicians). It says much for the ability ofSoft Machine that their portion of the concert was the most rewarding.They certainly deseved their top -of -the -bill status.

A COUPLE of weeks back, theChicken Shack gave up the blues.Is it the beginning of a twelve barlag for the blues field and its fans?Now the Groundhogs - heretoforereOrded as staunch blues men -have packed it up in favour ofother music forms.

"The blues don't pay,"exclaimed leader Tony McPhee,"at least not for this group. Forpeople like Mayall, yes. We neveractually called ourselves a bluesband, although we knew peoplewould label us that, but playedthem anyway. It was only thecategory nobody liked - it wasassociated with a period about fiveyears ago. At the time, it was theeasiest thing to fit into while wewere looking for the direction thatwould fit the group. With onlythree pieces, it was best for ourstage appearances to stick tosimple blues things and save thecomplex things for the albums. I

didn't realise when I started thatso much prejudice would be builtup against blues when peoplesuddenly decided they were an outthing.

Touchy job"It was pretty good until that

happened. Then the bookingsbegan to drop, but we had tocarry on until we found thedirection that suited us. Then wehad the touchy job of easing outof the field. This was done on ourlast LP, "Thank Christ For TheBomb" (which sold better than alltheir LPs and scored well in theLP charts). Now we want peopleto forget our association with theblues, not because we're ashamedof it, but because it was only a

Quite obviously they found theright sound from the statisticalsuccess of "Bomb" as well as theacclaim it received. It. was,however, the linking album; theone that experimented with a newconcept and approach. The LPthat is to follow will be tencountry miles from blues territoryand will feature their new aims ingreat concentration.

`More melodic'"Heavy music is all right in

clubs and great for crowds,"continued Tony, "but I don'tthink it goes down that well onrecords. When I sit down to reallylisten, I like to hear somethingmore melodic. That's the idea forthe Groundhog's music. I'm stillglad we have all that experiencebehind us, because I believe whenyou make it in a sudden burst,success is usually temporary. Youget worried about following up abig single. I'd rather try to make itnice and slow. Ease up to it.

The only singles we've hadreleased were for the purpose ofsecuring a few radio plays to helpthe albums as we're not a singlesband. There is far too muchexposure given to singles and theirbrief exposure leads to briefnotoriety If you make a bad

single after a big seller, that'salmost the end. A bad LP goes notunnoticed, but often as a mistakethat can be rectified with the nextone.

InsidiousOn singles, people tend to

knock follow-ups unless you comeup with something identical to thefirst, which is stupid. There issomething insidious about thisbusiness; something that iscreeping over me. It isn't thefeeling of instability or financialinsecurity, but more a mentalforce that seems to be drawing meaway from myself and into it.Sometimes I think I'll chuck it alland do something really straight -like accountancy. But that's reallythe other extreme. Sometimes I

think I'll just FREAK. That's theonly way to describe it."

YES -NO -YES AGAINMISSING FEARED dead. That was the sad story of Yes a few months ago, when the group lookedlike being swallowed up by internal disputes and management hassles.

It was a pity, because they had made a really bright start only a short time before. Yes had beentipped as the big new find of 1969 by Television's 'Magpie' programme and they found therr.elves onthe same bills as Cream and Janis Joplin.

But then came the troubles. And that bright start crumbled a bit as the group fought to keep on itsfeet.

It took a little time, but they eventually made it. Yes weren't exactly intact - they had lost theirmanagement and the lead guitarist Pete Banks - but they were on their feet again.

The new lead guitarist was Steve Howell - at one time guitarist with Keith West's group,Toomorrow - and the whole group decided to handle all their business arrangements by themselves.

And then recently, it all happened again. Yes had a new album, 'Time And A Word' released andthey started the long climb back again.

Commented singer Jon Anderson: "It's like when we first started out, there's such a lot ofenthusiasm with the group.

"What is happening now is a huge revitalisation inside the band. We now realise it's up to us entirely.We haven't got a manager or anything. All our work is done by the band and our friends."

THE SITEThe Festival Site is at East Afton Farm, near Freshwater in the West Wight. It comprises of several hundred acres of natural grassyland and commands extensive views of the English Channel, The Mainland Coast and Tennyson Downs.

TRANSPORTSpecial trains and regular services will run from London and other major cities to Portsmouth and the South Coast. From here specialferries will operate a constant 24 -hour shuttle service to Ryde, Isle of Wight, and will connect with buses which will run direct to theFestival Site.

FACILITIESThe site is elaborately constructed and entirely self-contained. The 3,0-acre grass arena will be banded by double walling between whicha road will run, allowing shops throughout the area to be serviced. There will be complete catering facilities and every type of food willbe available. Bars will be open from 11.30 a.m. to 11.30 p.m. continuously. Facilities on the site will include 100 food stalls,restaurants and snack bars, 120 shops of every type, welfare enclosures, exhibition areas, car parks, free camping sites and full toiletand washing facilities.

THE PROGRAMMEThe Daily Concerts will commence at mid -day and continue until midnight. In addition to the 3 days of advertised music, there will beadditional concerts on Wednesday and Thursday, 26th and 27th August. The artistes and details of this extended programme will beannounced soon.

Georgie talks to Record Mirror...

FAME AT last for the UnitedStates.

The British breakthroughinto the lucrative Americanpop market, started, ofcourse, with the fable -likedays of Beatlemania. Sincethen, the Rolling Stones, theWho, and, more recently, theKinks - all from those daysin the middle sixties - havemade it in the States. ExceptGeorgie Fame.

STATES TOURGeorgie never made the

States during the 1960s. Hecould have gone - the marketwas wide open and waiting forhim. Georgie had hisAmerican hits and thetransatlantic grapevine hadgiven him an establishedfollowing.

But it wasn't until this yearthat Georgie finally toured theStates, together with his newband, Shortly. They weregone six weeks, playing at theWhiskey in Los Angeles, theF illmore West in SanFrancisco, a week in NewYork and dates in Detroit andPhiladelphia.

EXPLANATIONBack home in Britain,

Georgie explained why hisStateside tour was so delayed:"It was a question of how toapproach the United States.Looking back at it all now, I

think we really should havegone out there with the BlueFlames. We had 'Yeah, Yeah'and 'Getaway', both of whichwere fairly big hits for us atthe time.

"But somehow things werealways being put off untileventually, we only made itthis year.

0"The tour itself wasn't

really extensive although thereaction we received wasreally very good. A largepercentage of our audiencesseemed to know who wewere, although I don't thinkthey knew what to expect. Allin all, though, I think we didwell.

SOLO TRIP?"We were going to go back

and do a tour with John Mayall,but we've pulled out, because,even though the reaction toShorty was good,rather than goout again and be the fourth andfifth on the bill - and losemoney - I'd rather go out bymyself sometime later and tryand make it on my own."

Georgie's latest single, 'Fireand Rain' was recorded in NewYork's CBS Studios - the samestudio's that were used bySimon And Garfunkel for their'Bridge Over Troubled Water'epic.

Commented Georgie: "Iused American musicians for

TUNESthe sssion and we recorded threesongs - 'Fire And Rain', thesingle's B side 'Someday Man'and a joke song called 'MovieStar Song' - using GeorgieAndrews as arranger. He was theguy, I believe, who wasoriginally connected withBlood, Sweat and Tears. From aprofessional point of view, I'mreally pleased with the waythings have turned out.

" 'Movie Star Song' willmaybe be the last track on analbum, or even a single B side.It's just a funny song - almostin the 'Bonnie And Clyde'vaudeville style."

Georgie has plans to returnto America to record a soloalbum - although he still hasanother British album in thepipe -line.

"When I went to Australiaearlier this year for cabaret I

thought I'd hate it - although asit turned out, it was reallyenjoyable.

"It was just a case of runningthrough half a dozen hits andthen getting into some othersongs. Strangely enough, the

audience appreciated some ofthe more jazz based songs.

SEARCHING

"And then I've got a songwhich is basically the'Coronation Street' theme withsome lyrics added. It's all donein my north -country accent andit went over so well, I've decidedto put it on the next album."

Georgie, however, hasn'twritten any material for the newalbum. "It's depressing fromtime to time, but I haven'twritten anything for over a

month. I suppose some peoplecan be prolific, and I'm one ofthe people who just can't. So atthe moment I'm searchingaround for material to put ontothe album - maybe a couple ofJames Taylor songs, like 'FireAnd Rain'. That's a verybeautiful song - Taylor reallyhas a way of putting meaningover."

bigger than ever, growing like ivy over thewalls of the pop foundation. Berry Gordy Jr.,president and founder of Tamla, had thoughtabout forming the label since he was a rattlingyoungster, so with songwriting dividends, he

It's Tamla's birthday!started work on it in 1959. The first major hitfor a group that was to become one of theapples of Motown's eye was the Miracles, with"You Better Shop Around." It was a golddisc. Mary Wells then followed with severalmajor hits, but left the label for virtualoblivion soon afterwards. Later, more nameswere added from inside the city limits ofDetroit; The Temptations, the massive sellingbut late starting Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, theMarvelettes and the biggest Tamlaphenomenon on the books, the Supremes.

The company began to operate in a

different manner than its competition - itsprouted as a family instead of a strictlycalculated business. A large portion of itssuccess was due to the fact that it kept itsartists happy. They had a say in what theydid and at no time was the pressure greatenough to injure their performances. Theysang on each other's songs and produced eachother's records. Everybody knew everybody

and a rare ease of operation came into being.Martha and the Vandellas and Stevie Wonderwere added. The Supremes broke into the top.Tamla didn't seem to discard artists that hadless success than others. In fact, SmokeyRobinson, who was to become vice-presidentof the organisation, was thinking in terms ofpensions for artists in later years. "You'd besurprised at the people who are taken care ofby Motown," he said on a British visit.

Peculiar aura

The last three or four years have seen apeculiar aura set on several of the Tarnlaartists and groups. The Supremes have risen tothe top - almost as far as one could hope togo - and Diana Ross, a legend in her time,

Marvin Gaye and the lateTammi Terrell scored heavily. From thatpoint, they could do no wrong. Tamlapresented the public with a new and uniquestyle, let them listen and watch while it wasmodified, improved and polished, thenretained for their pelasure the ability tocontinue it with variety and taste. Itimplanted itself in the hearts of the enthusedand the indolent so well, that it became anintegral part of mass communication. Like thetelephone, it's necessity was unquestionable.Happy tenth birthday - the first decade hasbeen a fine performance from your artists aswell as your executives.

Martha's been with Tamlasince the beginning. Has itchanged f "Of course, a

company must change when itgets bigger and Tamla hasgrown. It started as a smallhouse and studio and now we'rein a big new building.

Familyatmosphere"Tamla is still the same place

it's always been for me, though.There's a nice familyatmosphere in the place that'sstill very evident." Martha livesin Detroit, . ." I wouldn't wantto live anywhere else - I want tobe near my mother. I'm a bigbaby really and I enjoy callingher up once in a while andchatting with her."

Music is her life. Marthacannot really immagine herselfdoing anything except singing.How about films "I'd like to gointo films or acting, but it wouldhave to be something fairlyworthwhile. All singers areactors to a certain extent.

"But I wouldn't want to justwalk in anywhere and take apart I couldn't really handle.Some people spend all their lifetraining to be actors."

"Jimmy Mack" is very muchthe Tamla sound of five yearsago, but that doesn't seem tobother the group even thoughthe two Vandellas - Stella andLois - are -not even featured onthe single they are currentlypromoting. "Tamla had a

definite Detroit sound then. Butmusic changes. Now thecompany is into a morecommercial sound with thingslike the Jackson Five, but we arealways still exploring and we'llcome up with something newagain before long.

"I love Kiki Dee's album forinstance. It sounds new andexciting. I think she's a

tremendous artist."Martha talked a great deal at

our meeting about many of herpast hit discs. She wouldn'tsingle any of them out as being

her best, although sherecognises that "Dancing In TheStreet" has been the biggestworld-wide success. She seemsparticularly interested now inalbums ("I think 'Sugar andSpice' was the best one we evermade - High' was O.K.,but I didn't enjoy doing it somuch) and has some good ideasfor the future. She wants, forinstance, to become moreinvolved in her records.

New albumShe promises the new album

will be quite something, butthat the Vandellas arecontinually "searching" forfresh ideas. Perhaps thispromotional visit will help toreally establish Martha and theVandellas here. And if they get ahit this time, they will tour theU.K. next year. As Martha andthe Vandellas. NO SPLIT!

DEAR JOHNSTILL STOMPING my feet andswaying to the rocking beat, I

salute 'First Gear's heroic efforton behalf of rock and roll(Saturday, August 8th). Chuckling,introducing and spinning suchblasts from the past as "Johnny B.Goode, "Jailhouse Rock""Tonguetied Jill" and others,Johnny Moran turned the wheelsof time back to the Golden Era -and how.

However, I am sure I speak forall rock and roll fans when I saythat the first edition of 'FirstGear' was superb, but unfair toMerrill Moore and Ronnie Hawkinsfans. These two rock initiators,Merrill and Ronnie, typify theearly fifties, pre -Presley style ofrock and roll music. Two stalwartswho certainly deserve to be given alittle needle -time appreciation infuture 'First Gear' programmes.

And as far as I'm concerned,

EREMEMBER HANK Marvin? It seems that Radio One doesn't.His new single, "Break Another Dawn," has been on the marketfor four weeks now and I still have not heard it on the radio.Not only has this happened with his present disc, previousreleases have met with the same fate, either to be forgotten orend up as theme music for Tony Blackburn's "birthday spot."

Of course, if it happens to be a Cliff and Hank single, it isgiven maxiumum airplay. I can therefore only assume that thedisc-jockies on Radio One have something against Hank.

I know that Hank is not the only artist to meet with thislack of airplay. Radio can make or break a disc and it seemsthat while the BBC monopolises the air, they are really in aposition to dictate which records should make the charts.

All Americansingles are issued as sstereo in theUSA yet when they are pressedover here they are pressed mono.Also most mono singles areavailable on stereo albums such as"Cottonfields", "Love Like AMan" etc from "CricklewoodGreen." Surely there are enoughstereo reproducers to warrant thisand most mono players can playstereo records anyway.

While sympathising with mostof the points made, I disagree withthe one made against the MoogSythesiser.

I for one think it could play alarger part in widening alreadybroad musical horizons. Does itreally matter how a sound isproduced, whether electronicallyor otherwise? Surely it is the endproduct which counts and if usedin moderation the Moog can beextremely effective in producingvarious effects and even bizarresolos.

As with the mellotron, howeverthe music played must be writtenspecially for the instrument.

TIR NA NOG is the GaelicShangri La, roughly translated itmeans "Land Of Youth". It is alsothe name of an Irish folk duo nowliving in London. Leo O'Kelly andSonny Condell are the first Irishfolk outfit signed by Chrysalis andare currently working on their firstalbum.

"We find that the mostimportant thing about theacoustic guitar is the very closecontact between, the player andthe instrument. The notesproduced are formed by thefingers and nails of the player -especially in Finger -picking.Different shaped fingers and nailscan produce totally differentsounds. Some players use theactual finger tips of their righthand - Davy Graham, forinstance. However, we find that*carefully filed and shaped nailscombined with a thumb -pick give usthe best tonal results. They makefor a more defined and clearsound.

"We have both played electricin Rock groups but have returnedto the acoustic guitar because of its'down to earth sound" andportability. Apart from everythingelse it's so much more possible to"get around" with acoustic guitars.Hitching a lift is no fun with a100 watt amplifier strapped onyour back.

"An acoustic guitar is soneccessary to a songwriter. Whenan idea comes he can't go fiddlingabout with equipment andmending jackplugs, by which timehis inspiration would have flownaway to some other genius layingin wait with his acoustic guitar.

That's how we got most of ours."We have been writing songs

for a few years now and will bebringing out an album in a whileon the Chrysalis label At themoment we are looking for a

suitable producer. This is soimportant and can be difficult too.

"Pop producers are pretty easyto come by but one has got to beso careful in choosing a producerfor songs where the words are anintegral part, and where theatmosphere of the song can be soeasily destroyed by tastelessproduction.

"We'd like a considerable rangeof instruments and sounds on our

records but at the same timepreserving the freshness of themusic. Many of today's albumslack this quality, sadly. Either therecords are cheaply done with oneor two instruments, which makesfor a rather colourless album, orthe records are so cluttered withassorted mellotrons and crashingcymbals that the songs areobscured by the over -lavisharrangements.

"With the growing popularityof more meaningful songs a newbreed of record producer isneeded. A more artistic andsensitive person is neccessary."

CLIFF RICHARD: I Ain't Got Time Any More; Monday ComesToo Soon (Columbia DB 8708). This is Cliff's 470th single, orsome equally improbable number - improbable because hisstandards never seem to suffer. This is a slow starter, through theverse with an inquiring sort of tone and then into a gentle -pacedchorus, with voices tacked on. Could be that chick Samantha whois causing his misery ..." she ain't mine any more". Theperformance is beyond criticism, as it usually is with Cliff. I guesshis success is an ability to switch disc styles. Whatever it is this isdestined for a very high chart placing. Well done, Mike Vickers,for the backing. CHART CERT.

J. A. FREEMAN: Where Did WeGo Wrong (Decca). One of thebest of the batch. This lad is anundisputed talent as writer andsinger and there is enough in thisIntresting, always intresting, balladto suggest sales chances.THE POWER PACK: Oh Calcutta(Polydor). From "that" show. Nota bad sound, with the emphasis onbrass, and it don't 'arf swing inplaces. Pretty atmospheric,considering the musicainspresumably were fully dressed.MISSISSIPPI: Mr. UnionRailwayman (Fox), Somewhatpromising new group, semi -pro asof this moment, but with the sortof attack that could pay off.TANGERINE PEEL: Soft Delights(RCA). Nice arrangement here, but' felt it fell a bit flat on the vocalside in parts. Or maybe it was justthe material.MILLIE: We're All In A Zoo

(President). I suppose we are,really. This is a softer, relaxed,stylish Millie who has lost thatearly ear -piercer of a trill. Verynice indeed.RECO: It's Love (Columbia).Trombone -led instrumentationwith a reggae beat. At least, it hasa different edge to it. Well -blown,this.THE LAURELS: A straightcommercial sound, as is to beexpected of a John Macleodproduction. Group vocal, gentlyswinging, predictable lyrics.FATHER'S BROWN: Maybe(Decca). Very unusual slice ofgood-time music, with off -beatvocal delivery, later changing tofull-blooded sounds. An outsider,but promising.RUSSELL MORRIS: Rachel(Decca). Good lyrics on thisstory -line song. Sensitive allianceof strings and guitar behind.Unusual, really.

M SON'S ROCK ROMANCEWHITE PLAINS: Lovin' YouBaby; Noises (In My Head), DerainDM 312. Usual formula - this istheir third, I think. That means,orchestral build-up (brief andpertinent) and then a jolly oldchorus song which doesn't havemuch to say for itself but isperformed with big -risingharmonies and with a straight,sharp, single-minded commercialsound. Actually I liked it a lot.And it'll do well. CHART CERT.TOOMORROW: I Could NeverLive Without Your Love; RollLike The River (Decca F 13070).While not convinced about theultimate musicianship of thisgroup, in that it's hard to see justwhere they're at in their vocalbuild-up, this is blessed with a

so -easy chorus hook that it'll besung along with at all levels. It's avery strong Bruce Welch, he of theShadows, production. Nicevariation of girls and boys in turn.CHART CHANCE.DAVE MASON: Only You KnowAnd I Know; Sad And Deep As

You (Harvest HAR 5024). Thatarch -veteran of the class groupscene pulls out a track from his"Alone Together" album. Niceurgent touch in the voice and asort of rock -romantic song.Touches of falsetto comes as asurprise, but mostly it's the toughguitar and blues -tinged voice.Could miss, but I commend it.CHART CHANCE.

MELANIEMELANIE: What Have They DoneTo My Song Ma; Ruby Tuesday(Buddah 2011-038). What indeed?You may have heard the Britishcover by the New Seekers ofMelanie Safka's marvellous (and, inthis case, particularly pertinent)little song - now you can go outand get the original, yet for someunintelligible reason as officiallyonly the B-side of this release.Madness. "Ruby Tuesday" is a

Powerhouse and mightyhigh trumpet work on a stereoproduction which jazz fans will digmore than the general herd.HORACE FAITH: Black Pearl(Trojan). Based, but in reggaestyle, on the old classic PhilSpector production. Could justprove a hit for the extrovertHorace.CARL GROSZMANN:Thunderbird (Decca). Pian-introedpiece with Carl double -trackedthrough the song. Incidentally, thelyrics are pretty good.

PICTURE POSTCARD: Give ALittle Love To Someone(Polydor). A straightforward groupvocal on a philosophic andstraightforward song. Lead voice isvery good indeed and this onecould clock.WINSTON GROOVY: Here Is MyHeart (New Beat). Very gentlereggae piece with a good dancebeat and fuller -than -usual stringbacking.GEOFF LOVE ORCH: CoronationStreet (Columbia). TONY JOE WHITE: Save YourSugar For Me; My Friend(Monument MON 1048). UUH!Grunt! Mumble, mumble. Nowwah-wah me one time - keep thebrass low and funky, y'all -schlerp that hi -hat some more -oh yeah, bring up some soulfulchicks, but don't let anything gettoo loud, mind, and we'll cut thisone. "UUH! Down in the swamps,now, running through thewoods . . ." When "SoulFrancisco" came out, THAT wasan event. Still, if you've only gotone party trick, no matter hownifty, it must pall sometime. Theslow flip is better, to be fair.B. B. KING: Hummingbird; AskMe No Questions (Stateside SS2176). After the wah-wah overlayof "So Excited", the latest step inRiley's path to 'teen acceptance isfor him to record a Leon Russellslowie. What next - "Hey Jude"?Sure, it's fine for him to do whathe wants if he does it well, it'snice that he can, now play theFillmores, it's good that he may

be richer, it's time that he haduniversal acclaim, etc, etc, andthere's only so far you can get inthe Blues and he's been there foryears, etc, etc, but he sure ispaying the cost to be the boss. Itwould be easier if he joined JohnMayall for a couple of months.JEFFERSON AIRPLANE: HaveYou Seen The Saucers; Mexico(RCA 1989). Whinirg guitar,shifting rhythms, loose vocals byall and sundry, and a simplereptitive chant of the title. I cansee its good points without reallydigging it much (especially not the"Woodstock Nation" reference).Kinda "flower power".SMITH: What Am I Gonna Do(Stateside). The "Baby It'sYou"/"Take A Look Around"group, on a fairly ordinaryrumbling drum slowie, sung byGayle McCormick this outing.THE GODWIN SET: Gotta ClearMy Head (London). Jamaicanreggae, and even though I suspectthat Roland Alphonso is heavilyinvolved it don't exactly sparkle.

JOE HENDERSON: Power To ThePeople (CBS Milestone Stereo64068).

Joe Henderson with HerbieHancock, Ron Carter, Jack, DeJohnette and Mike Lawrence in animpressive and, at times, verybeautiful jazz album. The ghost ofJohn Coltrane sweeps round theedges all the time, but basically,this is Henderson showing what asuperbly talented tenor player heis. A lovely album. Brian's own sleeve notes provea sufficient review, or at leastindicate some of the ideas behindthe tracks, as with the opening SlyStone number 'I Wanna Take YouHigher', which 'blew our minds'and proved a challenge to equal.Auger is a good organist and hisarrangement of 'Pavane' a Frenchclassical number proves interesting.For drummers, three-quarters ofside two is devoted to anexperiment using four drummerstaking certain roles. Not as

dynamic as expected, perhaps, butcertainly a nicely containedexperiment. V.M.

AQUILA: Aquila (RCA SF81261.Five piece punchy brass band.

Strange and somewhat fascinatingsounds of the opening track'Change Your Ways', thoughthroughout the album there tendsto be some discord.JUSTINE (Uni UNLS 111).

It's a bit too sugar -sweet andbasically gutless for my taste, I'mafraid. The girl singers - three arecredited, but there's only twopictured on the cover - produce aclose harmony sound whichsounds a little sterile. Some nice,but basically too innocent songswhich are difficult to take ifyou're not in the right mood. T.L.T.2.: It'll All Work Out InBoomland (Decca SKL 5050) T.2.

Once known as Morning -sound like an interesting bandweighed down by the poverty oftheir material. They sound likeable musicians who have haddifficulty in filling two sides of analbum. So, they've reverted to

ERIC CLAPTONextended pieces - the title track,for instance, which lasts 22minutes - which ultimately areempty and meaningless. The musicrambles and slides along, nevergetting to the point of whatthey're playing. Nevertheless, theyhave a future if they learn how tomake their music concise andconstructive. Perhaps their nextalbum? R.P.

There's a definite French flavour in the air this week, and in alovely box of liquers that arrived in the office to make the factclear! But despite that, a Francoise Hardy album is always good!This double set with an open out cover featuring Francoise, givesa cross section of her French and British offerings. A bumpertwenty tracks including 'This Little Heart', 'Say It Now', 'QuiPeut Dire' and 'It's Getting Late'.

IMAMERIC CLAPTON: Eric Clapton-Slunkey; Bad Boy; Lonesome And ALong Way From Home; After Midnight; Easy Now; Blues Power; BottleOf Red Wine; Lovin' You Lovin' Me; Told You For The Last Time;Don't Know Why; Let It Rain (Polydor Super 2383 021).

Clapton's first solo LP isn't really a solo LP, as it features most of thefriends from "Friends". The difference is that Eric also sings lead insteadof just backing with guitar. Bonnie Bramlett handles the majority of theharmonies and together, Clapton and Bonnie are as smooth as Delaneyand Bonnie. Most of the songs feature steady repeating rhythms, givingEric a chance to roam in and out of the scales with some amazinglysmooth guitar exercises between vocal verses. Among those 'helping out'are Rita Coolidge, Bob Keys and Bobby Whitlock, Leon Russel on piano,John Simon on piano and Steve Stills. The material is similar to thetouring LP with Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, but much sharper anddefinitely deeper. The best track seems to be "After Midnight," whichincorporates cascades of wavering gospel moans to a non-stop at leastthree part guitar line. The two things that must be faced up to - noother collection of people can blend lead guitars so well and almostanybody oan sing with Bonnie Bramlett.THE LEGEND OF ELMOREJAMES (United Artists StereoUAS 291091.

A superb introduction to a

legendary bluesman. His flair,imagination and feel were almostunsurpassed. and greatlyi of I uenced such contemporaryrock bands as Fleetwood Mac.Some lovely flowing blues, mostlyrecorded in the early '50's. UA areto be cong,atulated in bringingJames's work to the publicnotice. R.P.

MOTHER EARTH: Make A JoyfulNoise (Mercury SMCL 20173).

Straight pop, black soul andwhite blues are heavily andcarefully backed on side one (CitySide), while side two (CountrySide) contains western touchescomplete with soaring steel guitar.A very good idea and a fairattempt at versatility. A kind of'something for everybody' LPmade by a group that obviouslypractise a lot. None of it is reallythat authentic, yet none of it isoffensive and some of it is evengreat. It is avery good album, the best tracksbeing two instrumentals;"Unsettled Piece," by AndyRoberts and "Persuasion," by TinAngel (sounding remarkablysimilar to Hard Meat's MickDolan). FESTIVAL"FESTIVAL" IS a film offestivals - just as the titledepicts. However, there is a

difference betweeneverybody's idea of a festivalnow and what a festival wasbefore the politics/police/racebattles entered into thepicture. I don't know whetheryou remember it or not, butearly festivals did not needHell's Angels either.

"Festival" is an account ofthe Newport Folk Festivalsfrom 1963 to 1966, when alot of today's big artists werestill little and able to minglefreely. In '63, kids were hungup with harmonica braces andreceived a thrilling tingle fromgrowing their hair an inchlonger. Folk music always

common direction amongthem. From all over the U.S.,high school and college kids,plus a few elders migrated toNewport to hear the word andto sing among themselves. Totrade guitar secrets and to airtheir own songs.

Universal feelingThey huddled neatly under

the wing of the glowingwritings from the young Bob

Dylan, the sweetclear -as -a -mountain -brookvoice of Joan Baez and theinspiration of countlessguitarists and singers whowere really just like them.

More than anything, theysought a universal feeling.When someone sang a sad

song, they all felt sad

together. You felt yourself afriend of every person present.There was no need toannounce that the festivalwould end abruptly if the farright-hand corner did not stopburning the fences while theacts were on. No helmetedpolice frisked trippers at

random. Trippers were notthat common.

Hints of protest

As they sat there listeninglike members of a large familyon a summer outing, they feltthe beginnings of what was tocome. Through the almost'high' sensation of being partof something huge moving andfeeling with it, came the earlyhints of protest. Previously, afolk song had existed to makeyou sad, and reminiscent,happy and jocular, or itprovided a chance to sing with

the person next to you. Now,it was unearthed as possiblythe most powerful means ofswaying opinion everdiscovered. Bob Dylan, meekand mild, sang "Mr.Tambourine Man," Peter, Pauland Mary sang his "TimesThey Are A Changin' ".Donovan sang "The War DragsOn." While the feeling grewand freckle -faced teenagers

Star studded Otis show returnsTHE MOST influential singer ofthe last 25 years was Roy Brown.

Well, maybe it was HankWilliams. But whereas a lot ofpeople are aware of HankWilliams, Roy Brown (to quotethat famous series in this paper afew years back) is one of the greatunknowns.

A number of problems arise atthis point. First: there has onlyever been one track by Brownissued in this country from thematerial he recorded for Kingfrom 1948 to 1955, "Hard LuckBlues," which is on Ember's "25Years Of Rhythm And Blues."Second: even in the States, wherehe has shared three LP's (withWynonie Harris) and had one tohimself ("24 Biggest Hits"),nothing is currently available. Andthird: Polydor, who have rights toKing material, show no interest inmaking available some of the mostexciting music ever recorded. Soan article on Roy Brown seemslike a waste of space - whatdifference will it make?

But there is one sign thatmaybe all is not yet lost, for RoyBrown and his kind of singing.Johnny Otis, who came back tomusic in order to launch his sonShuggie into the music business,has rediscovered what a lot of funit can be, playing old-time R & B.And, having collected anassortment of former side -men tomake up a band, Johnny has nowgarnished his show with a fewextra singers: T -Bone Walker (whohas recently had to go to hospitalfollowing a breakdown), JoeTurner (who is due to tour Britainat the end of this year), RoyMilton, Eddie "Cleanhead"

This galaxy, which played topacked houses at the Ash GroveClub in Los Angles for a couple ofweeks recently, will be given a

whole afternoon at the MontereyJazz Festival in September; havingachieved this kind ofrespectability, R & B may begin toreceive some deserved attentionfrom compilers of vintage LP's.

Each of those singers Otis hasbrought into his show were oncemajor R & B singers, and deserveattention from anyone with morethan a casual interest in rock 'n'roll and soul. But Roy Brown wasparticularly great.

Like Smiley Lewis, Roy Brownhas been ascribed to both NewOrleans and Texas, but whereasLewis was probably from NewOrleans, Brown most likely camefrom Texas. He cut his first recordthere, for Gold Star of Houston in

1947, and then started recordingfor De Luxe, the subsidiary ofKing Records of Cincinatti. Hisfirst De Luxe release was "GoodRockin' Tonight"/"LollipopMama."

"Good Rockin' Tonight" wassoon covered by Wynonie Harrisfor King, and subsequently becamea rock 'n' roll standard: strangely,Brown's version has never beenincluded on an LP, and I've neverheard it. But we can get a goodidea of how he did it from someof his other raving dance songs,including the near -hysterical"Boogie at Midnight."

It is curious that in none of hisinterviews has Little Richard evermentioned Roy Brown. Becausealthough Richard undoubtedly hada personal style, it is equally surethat he was greatly influenced byBrown; this is clearest on therecords Richard made in 1951 forRCA (issued here on a Camden

LP). Roy Brown had that frantic,uninhibited, almost desparate,determination to express hisstrongest feelings. Yet despite theapparent abandon with which hesang, his voice was remarkablyprecise - he aimed for particularnotes, and hit them. Unlike LittleRichard, he never screamed orwhooped; but he did wail,dragging words out until theybecame pure sounds. "CadillacBaby" and "Ain't No Rockin' NoMore" on the LP "Roy Brownsings his 24 Biggest Hits" showhim at his wildest.

At more subdued pace, Brownwas equally expressive. "HardLuck Blues". has the same sort ofdesolation Elvis Presley got in"Heartbreak Hotel." "Big Town"was even more despairing, anciconvincing.

Most of these records weremade between 1948 and 1953,with bands featuring sax soloists.This was the time when KingRecords put out a succession ofgreat records, by people who havenow unjustly become unknown orobscure names. Australian readerJohn Doyle writes in despair:"when will Polydor put outrecords by Ivory Joe Hunter,Gatemouth Moore, Little Esther,Eddie Vinson, JimmyWitherspoon, Roy Brown, EarlBostic, Big Jay McNeely,Bullmoose Jackson, SonnyThompson, and Lucky Millinder.And, from a later period, HankBallard, Little Willie John. By theway, how has the WynonieHarris/Tiny Bradshaw disc sold inBritain?"

Unfortunately, theHarris/Bradshaw record didn't sellvery well; but it was so shyly

released, promoted, anddistributed, that it never had achance to show what it might beable to do. No sleeve note, noadvertising, scarcely any reviews.Did the company care?

The echo of Roy Brown liveson, in the voices of B. B. King,Bobby Bland, Ted Taylor, LittleJohnnie Taylor - and LittleRichard. An LP by Brown is the,least he deserves.

Footnote for fans, of all kinds.The only book that has ever comeclose to understanding the strangerelationship between a fan and theheroes he idolises is "A Fan'sNotes" by Frederick Exley(Penguin). It happens that the fanslike American Football, but theparallels for music fans areeverywhere. The books is great.

struggled to unravel the truemeaning, countless souls whohad lived it through their ownsongs paraded before theirstarry eyes.

Expression

Not only did listeners seethat these were just people,but they plowed right throughthe idea and found that theycould all do it in their ownlittle way. A new means ofexpression at their fingertips.

Carnaby Street and parkedmyself in the entrance to theRecord Mirror offices. Theballoon sellers, tourists andtraffic wardens stared at me,took photographs and gave mea gentle kick now and againto make sure that I was stillalive. Some even looked at thepicture of The Poppy Familythat was pinned to my lapelbut mostly they just smiledsadly. The reason for my vigilwas to enforce Decca's theorythat WHICH WAY YOUGOIN' BILLY? was a hitrecord. No-one cared, no-onebothered, no-one reallybelieved me.

Maybe in a way they can't beblamed. The record was releasedon October 31, 1969 and sixmonths later we were still tellingpeople that it would get into thehit parade. In that time it hadmade No 1 in Canada and America,sold over 1,000,000 copies andmade the Poppy Family one ofthe most sought after acts on thatside of the Atlantic.

In March of this year thegroup, Craid MacCaw, SatwanSingh, Terry Jacks and beautifulSusan Jacks, flew into London andrecorded an album with Britishmusicians. The title? Yes you'reright - WHICH WAY YOU GOIN'BILLY? This was released on April17th and received rave reviews -with one national paper heraldingit as 'The record of the month' -but still the single wasn't in thecharts.

We had a re -think. Is the recordreally good ...is our faithjustified? We were still confidentbut to substantiate our feelings weplayed the record again to everyonewe came in contact with and thingsbegan to happen. We discoveredthat we weren't alone any more.The record bubbled under thecharts for a couple of weeks and

Each sentence is accompaniedby gesticulations. The hands go upand down and around. It is

impossible not to think of a ratherhip clergyman. But that is not, hesays, what he is intending tobecome. To back it up he pointsout that he will be appearing atthe Talk of the Town duringSeptember and October, hardly ahotbed of religious thought.
