stewarding digital media for ministry and life
DESCRIPTION
From a 2011 study, David Kinnaman, president of Barna Group, reflected on the findings in this way: “Technology is shaping family interactions in unprecedented ways, but we seem to lack a strategic commitment to the stewardship of technology. The Christian community needs a better, more holistic understanding of how to manage existing and coming technological advances. Parents, tweens and teens need more coaching and input in order to face the countless choices they make regarding how technology affects their attention, interests, talents and resources.” Drawing heavily from Click 2 Save by Drescher & Anderson and The Social Media Gospel by Gould, this workshop will investigate the role that media plays in the modern American household, and how the church can effectively support and utilize opportunities for ministry and discipleship. ** Please note, this workshop is not a 101 training for digital media platforms. MAKING THE CASEfrom “How Technology is Changing Millennial Faith” (Barna, 2013)
Seven out of 10 of practicing Christian Millennials (70%) read Scripture on a screen.
Over half (56%) of practicing Christian Millennials are using online search to scope out a church, temple or synagogue online.
14% of Millennials say they search to verify something a faith leader has said. A striking 38% of practicing Christian Millennials say the same.
MAKING THE CASEfrom “How Technology is Influencing Families” (Barna, 2011)
Parents are just as dependent on technology as are teens and tweens.
Most family members, even parents, feel that technology has been a positive influence on their families.
Very few adults or youth take substantial breaks from technology.
Families experience conflict about technology, but not in predictable ways.
Few families have experienced—or expect—churches to address technology.
