Stewardship of Creation By: Joshua Kapika

What is creation? Creation is

everything that God created. From

the moon and the stars to the baby in

womb, God created all things. We

forget that everything that God has

made is our sibling in creation. We

are not greater than the rest of

creation, we are sharers in creation.

Today I hope to convey the

importance of care for God’s creation

and how this precious gift of

creation is not an object to be

used for personal benefit, but a

great gift that if cared for will

care for you.

Earth our home is often

referred to as mother, but we

have to remember that like us

the earth was created by God so

for the sake of continuity let’s

call earth sister earth for she was

created with us by God.

We may know the importance of

caring for creation, but do we truly

understand it. Imagine the earth as

your actual sister. Would you beat

your sister and make her give you

what you want? Would you force her

to do things for your own benefit?

No, what kind of sibling would you

be? An abusive one.

Like our own families we must

care for creation and treat the earth as

our very own sister. Take the time to

provide for the earth and it will

provide for you. Many ancient

cultures understood the importance

for the care of the earth; they knew

that if we cared for the land, we

would be cared for by it.

We often forget that we are

siblings in creation and as such we

treat the earth as an object to be

enslaved. Yes, God said to man to

subdue it, but he expected us to care

for it. The objectifying of the earth

has led us to objectify each other.

Objectifying God’s creation has

really screwed with our minds. From

the first Sin when Eve and Adam ate

of the forbidden fruit, man began to

use earth as an object to be used for

his own gain instead of a gift to

be nurtured and cared for.

We now objectify our fellow

human beings who look like us and

who were made in God’s image and

likeness. Men objectify women and

women objectify men. We’ve taken

a baby in the womb and called it a

fetus to give it lesser meaning and

purpose.

More and more each day instead

of treating creation “earth and

humanity” with the dignity its due,

we instead use it and abuse it. Now

the earth doesn’t have the same

dignity as humanity, but it still

deserves to be treated better than we

do now.

As for humanity, we have great

dignity given to us by God. We have

been made in God’s image and

likeness and yet we fail to recognize

the dignity each person holds.

You may say I don’t do that,

but every time you look at some-

one with lust instead of with dig-

nity as part of God’s creation,

you are objectifying them.

The gift of creation is

important to be able to sustain

life on earth. When we don’t

care for the earth and pervert its

resources, we are failing at

caring for God’s creation.

When we allow mothers to rip the

innocent out of their wombs, we are

failing at caring for God’s creation.

The earth and the life that we bear

is so important to us and as gifts of

God, we must do our best to care for

it and defend it. Let us make the

effort to be better stewards of God’s

creation. Let us take the time to

value each part of creation and work

tirelessly to defend creation from the

injustices of today’s modern world.
