What did the youth in 2009 SummerYouth Employment Program do onsummer vacation? Answer: Theywere building bridges to futurecareers.

The Workforce Connection SummerYouth Program for Citrus, Levy andMarion Counties joined with 132business sites serving 300 youthfrom ages 14 to 24. The youngeryouth have participated in asimulated workplace where theybuilt a computer, hydrogen poweredcar, experimented with solar energymodels andparticipated in learning activities atrelated businesses.

Documenting - The media team ofCarter Twillie, age 21, and Ronald Thompson, age17, both of Ocala, documented the summer. We

have been recording and takingphotographs of the students in differentclassrooms and the other students thatare working in the different job clustersthat they want to go into after theprogram is over, said Twillie. Themost valuable thing I learned thissummer was to be persistent and workreally hard, even if it is something youlike or enjoy. Its all fun, but it is stillwork and keep professional where itbelongs and fun where it belongs.Twillie is interested in a career in themedical field and Thompson isinterested in photography.

Writing- Candria Mathis, 15, emaileda thank you note to her instructors. Iattended the youth connectionsprogram. . . . I would like to say thank

you for all that you did to make this programavailable. I enjoyed the program and the guest

speakers. I learned a lot in thisprogram. I never thought that I wouldassemble a computer, said Mathis.

Speaking - Jennifer Rijos, 15,delivered a speech at the graduation

ceremonies for the summer youthprogram. During our six weeks ourteacher taught us a betterunderstanding of jobs in the workindustry, budgeting and shopping

rules. said Riijos. She notedstudents learned how to fill out jobapplications. Christopher Jimenez, age 15, also addressed his classand explored career opportunities forhis future.

Responsibility- The mostimportant thing I have learned is howto be organized. Sometimes you

Jessia Kerison, 22, washired at part-time statusafter the youth programended at the law office

Accounting major JeffKeener, 19, interned at

Cridland & CridlandGMAC Real Estate, in Inverness. Its a great experience for future

jobs, as it is an office job. Its a greatenvironment for learning in thefuture. I have learned the accuracyof your work is very important. If youmake a mistake, than everyonesuffers from it, said Keener.

Responsibilty was something theylearned over time. . . . We acceptedthem to assit with the campers. Theresponsibility of following what theymust do, not what they want to do,said Albert Fuller, Levy County

Extention Director and 4-H Agent, onsummer camp workers.

Global thinking- I also didnt knowreally anything about the greentechnology out there. I learned thatno matter what field I choose to gointo, I can do something to make theplanet better, said CandriaMathis.
