One November we put a ‘thankful tree’ up on the wall of our kitchen. Every evening, we would each put something we were thankful for on a paper leaf and tape it to our tree. By Thanksgiving, you could no longer see the branches and we were all feeling pretty grateful. There is no tree on the wall of my kitchen this year but there are still many things I am thankful for…. the library, cups of tea, ipads, farmer’s markets, bicycles, sunny days, flea markets, old sewing machines, air conditioning, foot rubs, warm quilts, jigsaw puzzles, teachers, afternoon naps, used book stores, mini vans, cotton sheets, my husband, my children, Project Linus… and of course, you. Weaving In Those Ends! !You’ve spent hours and hours knitting or crocheting that beautiful blanket for Project Linus so here are some end weaving in options to help make it last a long, long time. Grab your tapestry needle and…. !1. Weave through the stitches Run your needle through the stitches about 1 inch in one direction, and then 1 inch back. If it works better, change direction completely and run it through some stitches horizontally, and some vertically. Be sure to weave it at least 3 inches of yarn. Always weave it on the wrong side of the work and always do your best to hide the ends in the work. !2. Whipstitch the stitches Whipstitch around the stitches on the wrong side of the work, changing directions to secure the ends as much as possible. !3. Weave as you crochet Double up your yarn and take the loose ends with you as you crochet. The benefit of this is that when you finish your blanket, you have most of the ends already taken care of!

**Editor’s note: When asked to bring something to a potluck I usually volunteer for a desert (surprise, surprise…). Unfortunately, I recently attended an event that was ‘all appetizers’! After a minor panic I turned to the Project Linus ‘Kitchens of Kindness’ cookbook and gave Cissy Singleton’s ‘Burrito Bites’ a try. They were a big hit! Really tasty, and incredibly easy, even for an appetizer challenged individual such as myself. Enjoy!

This heartfelt note was received by the local chapter coordinator who covers Siskiyou County, CA. !I am a parent of two children that attend Weed Elementary school and who were evacuated during the Boles Fire. When they came home bursting with smiles and showing me their two BEAUTIFUL quilts they received from Project Linus I was shocked! "Every child received one?" I said..."Yes, we all picked out one," they said. After reading the inscription tag included I was moved to tears. I had never known about Project Linus before and just want to say it was one of the sweetest, generous gestures. You gave all of these children a wonderful gift.....the gift of comfort. My daughter loves decorating with it and my son is attached to it somewhat like Linus and has slept with it every night so far. They shared stories of the other children so excited to pick out a special blanket made just for them, many of which lost all they had in the fire. They were so excited about them all made so special with children in mind. Those children may never forget that frightening afternoon in September but they will also never forget the love and generosity of others! Its been overwhelming! I hold them each a little tighter and thank God for all their safety! Please pass on a huge THANK YOU to fellow blanketeers. ..their gift meant more than they know :):)........

My wife and I just delivered a beautiful baby girl! What a surprise to find such a beautiful blanket waiting for her in the NICU, right on her bed. Thank you and all the Chicago chapter for the kind gift. We use it all the time!!

Just writing a little email to you all to let you know how wonderful your organization is. My husband and I just had our very first baby on May 20th and lost her that same day. One of the Project Linus crocheted blankets came to us that day and it has provided so much comfort to all of us since. I wanted to thank you for how much your organization can help in the healing process while we grieve. Our baby girl is named Hazel Noelle and she was wrapped with love in the blanket. Thank you so much.

Yesterday, as my daughter went back to get ready for surgery we came upon her bed with a neatly folded handmade quilt wrapped in a ribbon. When the nurse told me about Project Linus and how every little boy and girl gets a blanket before surgery I was overwhelmed with emotion knowing that a group of people, who do not know her, took the time to make something that will be forever special to her. My daughter hugged the blanket as they wheeled her off, giving her the security she needed. I just want to thank you for doing what you are doing. You are truly making a difference. It is wonderful to know there is still so much good in the world. When my daughter heals up, I am going to take her to pick out material to donate to a local Project Linus so she can return the gift of happiness to some little boy or girl. THANK YOU!!!!

thanks to all of you!

Yesterday my 8 yo son received a beautiful soccer ball fleece blanket at St Alexis before tonsil surgery. He has snuggled in it every minute since he received it! He was really afraid of the pre-op bed until it was delivered. We are a huge soccer family with 4 kids excelling in this as their favorite sport! We had just finished saying our prayers and this blankie showed up. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts. The P. Family

Thank you so much for the lovely blanket for our daughter. After months of visits to children’s memorial - we were relieved to take our healthy baby girl home in the cozy blanket. It meant so much to us to know that someone we did not know, cared enough to make our little girl a lovely gift. We treasure it, and it will always be a reminder of our good fortune…. our beautiful & healthy baby girl. Thank you. Michael & Judi

Harrison’s mom posted this message to Facebook: Thank you Project Linus! My lil 2 yo LOVES his new blanket. It made him very happy in the ER!

Thank you to ALL the many volunteers, y'all do a wonderful thing!

Mended Little Hearts of Chicago has partnered with the American Heart Association in celebration of American Heart Month by knitting & crocheting red hats for all babies born in February at participating hospitals.  They’re raising awareness for congenital heart defects with a goal to donate at least 300 hats! !They work with both the hospital’s Mother-Baby unit and Neonatal Intensive Care unit, so they need hats in both newborn and preemie sizes.   Mended Little Hearts of Chicago will also be the recipient of these hats to include in their care bags. !Yarn specifics: - Red    - Cotton or acrylic – the softer the better! - Medium to heavy weight   - Machine washable & dryable !They recommend simple hat patterns. While bows and buttons are adorable, they can come off the hats and be dangerous for the little ones. We will be collecting these hats at all Project Linus events up to and including the December 1st Wendy’s sit ’n sew. Contact Karen if you’d like to help. !Sample patterns for baby hats can be found here: http://www.pinterest.com/linuschicago/hats-for-the-mended-little-hearts-project/

We Are All Blanket Inspectors! !Each and every one of the blankets we process is going to end up in the hands of a child, so whether you’re labeling and tagging, bagging blankets for delivery, working at home or at one of our many events, please make sure to completely open up those blankets and remember….. !— Fleece blankets should have the selvage removed and all tabs should be cut nicely and not tied too tight. — Review the blanket size, making sure the width and length are in proportion. — All blankets should be free of pet hair, dirt, tears, rips and smells of any kind. — Always work on a clean service and make sure the blankets don’t touch the floor. — PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE MAKE SURE EACH BLANKET YOU TOUCH IS FREE OF PINS! !**If a blanket you’re working on has these or any other problems, please don’t label it! Take it to the event host or back to Judi or Penny to process through for a little tlc. !

Remember our motto, only process through a blanket that you would give to a beloved grandchild.

At our October tlc day a call went out for yarn to do a crochet demonstration for a new blanketeer. Ironically, in a room full of females, the only response came from our lone male, Mike Gidd. Much thanks goes out to Mike for everything he does, including (but certainly not limited to) punching and stringing almost every card that goes on a Project Linus blanket… and of course, for having yarn when we need it.

until next time…

The next time you’re in ‘Toon Town’, check out what Minnie Mouse is quilting for Linus!

One hundred years from now-it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in my bank account, nor what my clothes looked like. But the world may be a little better because I was important in the life of a child. Margaret Fishvack Powers
