*Confession and Forgiveness (from sundaysandseasons.com)Blessed be God, Father, ☩ Son, and Holy Spirit, whose forgiveness is sure and whose steadfast love endures forever. Amen.

Together let us honestly and humbly confess that we have not lived as God desires. Silence is kept for reflection.

Loving and forgiving God, we confess that we are held captive by sin. In spite of our best efforts, we have gone astray. We have not welcomed the stranger; we have not loved our neighbor; we have not been Christ to one another.Restore us, O God. Wake us up and turn us from our sin. Renew us each day in the light of Christ. Amen.

People of God, hear this glad news: by God’s endless grace your sins are forgiven, and you are free— free from all that holds you back and free to live in the peaceable realm of God. May you be strengthened in God’s love, ☩ comforted by Christ’s peace, and accompanied with the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Salutation The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Prayer of the DayStir up our hearts, Lord God, to prepare the way of your only Son. By his coming strengthen us to serve you with purified lives; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

WORDFirst Reading: A reading from Isaiah 40:1-11

1Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. 2Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the LORD’s hand double for all her sins.

3A voice cries out: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. 5Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

6A voice says, “Cry out!” And I said, “What shall I cry?” All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. 7The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the LORD blows upon it; surely the people are grass. 8The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever. 9Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!” 10See, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. 11He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep.

...Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God!

Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13 Two lectors read responsively by whole verse.1You have been gracious to your land, O LORD;

you have restored the good fortune of Jacob.2You have forgiven the iniquity   of your people and blotted out   all their sins. 8I will listen to what the LORD God is saying;

for you speak peace to your faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to you.

9Truly, your salvation is very near to   those who fear you, that your glory may dwell   in our land.

10Steadfast love and faithfulness have met together;righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

11Faithfulness shall spring up   from the earth, and righteousness shall look   down from heaven.

12The LORD will indeed grant prosperity, and our land will yield its increase.13Righteousness shall go before the   LORD and shall prepare for   God a pathway.

Second Reading: A reading from 2 Peter 3:8-15a.8Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. 9The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. 10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.  11Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, 12waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? 13But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.  14Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; 15aand regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. …Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God!

*Announcement of the Gospel The holy gospel according to Mark 1:1-8. Glory to You, O Lord!

*The Gospel is proclaimed 1The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  2As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; 3the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’ ”

4John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

…the gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ!

Sermon Pastor Luke Kuenzli

The Gospel of Mark, as many of you may be aware, is the shortest of the

four Gospels. It is missing what we might think to be important pieces of

information. For example, in this season of preparing for our celebration of

Christ’s birth, we hear nothing, from Mark’s Gospel, about angel visits, nothing

about Mary and Joseph and their journey to Bethlehem. No shepherds and

heavenly choirs, no magi and bright star, no massacre of the innocents by Herod,

no flight to Egypt. In fact, Mark has nothing at all to say about Jesus’ birth. Zip.

Zilch. Nada.

We might ask why Mark didn’t include any of this, and come to the

conclusion that it was already in Matthew and in Luke, so Mark didn’t feel the

need to say it again… but Mark was written before Matthew and Luke, and those

three Gospels share a lot of other material in common… so why not the nativity?

And if we’re not going to talk about Jesus’ birth, then why would Mark feel the

need to talk about Jesus’ baptism – his new birth?

9

Page 11: stjohnluthchurchmineola.org€¦  · Web view06/12/2020  · SERVICE OF THE WORD – COVID-19 In-Person + Virtual. 9. 10. St. John Lutheran Church (ELCA) Mineola, IA. Pastor Luke

SERVICE OF THE WORD – COVID-19 In-Person + Virtual

Of the four Gospels, Mark’s is the shortest, and also the most action-packed.

You jump quickly, in Mark’s account of Jesus’ life, from one moment to another,

without any smooth transitions, without much flowing. It’s a more helter-skelter

approach to telling the story.

I don’t know about you, but I think that seems pretty apropos for the year for

which we are approaching an end. 2020 has felt like Mark’s Gospel to me, in some

ways. A frantic and frenetic jumping from one thing to another: from closed to

open and back again; from one political spat to another; from tragedy to protest to

riot to waiting with bated breath for the other shoe to drop; from planned events to

alternate options to winging it. This year has made many of us tired. I get tired

quickly reading Mark’s Gospel, too. It’s just so fast-paced.

Mark doesn’t give us the back-story – Matthew’s genealogical account or

Luke’s longer story about the origins of John the Baptizer and Jesus’ birth or John’s

cosmic rendering of Jesus’ eternal being as the Word of God – Mark just jumps

almost right to where Jesus really started to get going, because for him, that was

where the good news began.

But, at the same time, Mark recognizes that we can’t simply jump right into

The Big Thing – we wouldn’t be able to cope with that! He starts his audience with

someone they know and love. It isn’t an accident that Mark refers to the prophets

(the verse claims to be citing Isaiah, but the first part is actually closer to a quote

from Malachi 3:1, though it is thematically related to the second portion, which

echoes Isaiah’s promise of a voice crying out in the wilderness). The Prophets were

very good at seeing what everyone else couldn’t see – God’s presence and activity

in the world. It was kind of their job to point the way to what God was up to. Well,

Mark is now doing the same. Where Malachi says “See, I am sending my

messenger ahead of you,” we could read, from the Greek translation “See, I am

10

Page 12: stjohnluthchurchmineola.org€¦  · Web view06/12/2020  · SERVICE OF THE WORD – COVID-19 In-Person + Virtual. 9. 10. St. John Lutheran Church (ELCA) Mineola, IA. Pastor Luke

sending my messenger before your face.” That’s what Mark does. He puts it all

right out in the open, from the very first verse, right in our faces.

He tells us right up front what he is going to talk about: The beginning of the

good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. There it is. Jesus is good news because

he is the Christ, the Greek word for the Hebrew Messiah, the one promised by the

prophets. Jesus is good news because, as Mark tells us from the get-go, he is the

Son of God. He puts it right up in our face, so that we have no doubt what he’s

talking about and how important it is. But again, we need something more familiar

with which to begin, so he goes on to describe John the Baptizer, but only in the

brief space of seven verses, just enough to pique our interest.

Still, it is interesting that Mark gives us more about John the Baptizer than

he does about Jesus’ birth… It seems clear that for Mark, the fact of birth – the

reality of being born – is secondary to the promise of God, that there is something

more to life that what we see around us. So, he sends the message right before our

faces: Jesus – promised Messiah – good news – Son of God!

What is it that we keep before our own faces? What are we watching? What

are we looking for? To whom is our attention turned? In this past year, our faces

seem to have been turned everywhere BUT toward the one place where they need

to be turned – the one person to whom they should be turned. Does what we watch,

what we see, what we read, what we spend our hours and days contemplating…

does it give us hope? Does it bring us peace?

This season of Advent is all about our preparing for Jesus’ coming. But if we

are to take our cue from Mark’s Gospel, as we will for much of the next year, then

the most important way that Jesus comes didn’t happen 2,020 years ago (give or

take); for Mark, the more important reality isn’t the birth, but rather the re-birth

that comes through a life lived in faith in God’s promise.

11

SERVICE OF THE WORD – COVID-19 In-Person + Virtual

That means a willingness to repent, to face our own wrongdoing and the

wrongdoing of others from which we have turned our faces, whether in discomfort

or in a feeling of helplessness or in willful ignorance. A life of faith, for Mark,

means a life of action, of holding up both the reality of the world in all its fallen

glory, AND the promise of redemption through the presence and activity of God.

It is important to be baptized with water (or Jesus wouldn’t have been so

baptized) but John points to a further baptism – one that doesn’t come from our

decisions and willingness, but from Jesus giving us the gift of God’s Holy Spirit –

a Spirit who is named, in other places in scripture, “The Comforter.”

“Comfort, O comfort my people,” says your God, as he sends the good news

right before our faces. The Good News of Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah, the

Son of God who lives with us and within us. The Good News of Mark’s Gospel,

that God is active in our world. The Good News that even when there is much

going on around us to draw our attention away from God’s face, God sends the

good news before our faces, wherever they are turned, to draw us back to him.

Though grass withers and flowers fade, and people do too – a reality made

all too apparent in the still increasing number of deaths related to COVID – though

our lives wither and fade, the Word of our God will stand forever! Jesus is lifted up

on a high mountain called Calvary, and we can proclaim with the angels and the

prophets, “Here is your God!” He is right there before us, showing us the depths of

God’s love in a way we cannot ignore, though it pains us to see it so. This reality –

not the birth of Jesus Christ, but his death – is where Mark places his emphasis.

Maybe you have asked why… Why did Jesus come to live among us, to die

like one of us, for us… why would God require that kind of penalty? I’m not at all

sure that it was required. That kind of substitutionary atonement doesn’t really fit

with the image of God portrayed by most of the New Testament… but if it wasn’t

required, then perhaps it was chosen – not by an angry Father who needed to have

12

Page 14: stjohnluthchurchmineola.org€¦  · Web view06/12/2020  · SERVICE OF THE WORD – COVID-19 In-Person + Virtual. 9. 10. St. John Lutheran Church (ELCA) Mineola, IA. Pastor Luke

his wrath satisfied – but chosen by a loving brother willing to take the fall for our

erroneous ways. Chosen by a brother who wanted to bring peace to our hearts and

to our world.

Chosen by a Lord Christ who is patient with us and will come to usher in the

eternal Kingdom after we have had every opportunity to turn in repentance to the

love of God. As Peter says, “Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these

things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; and regard the

patience of our Lord as salvation.” Be found by him at peace…

The Word of God, which stands forever, is a word of peace: As the Psalm

says: “You have forgiven the iniquity of your people and blotted out all their sins…

I will listen to what the LORD God is saying; for you speak peace to your faithful

people and to those who turn their hearts to you.”

Comfort, my people. Peace to you. God brings us these things, not by

ignoring the tragedies of life in this world, but by entering into them along with us,

by setting them before God’s own face, and by putting himself before us, again and

again, so that we might turn to him and be saved. This is who God is, what God

does, for you and for me. Thanks be to God. Amen.

Eucharistic Prayer and Words of InstitutionThis God of whom we speak, of whom we sing, in indeed a Holy and Mighty God, powerful and merciful. And this God not only came to us, but became one of us; God grew in Mary’s womb, nurtured by her body, and as he grew, the hope and fears of all the years drew near to their fulfilment.

On the night in which he was born, our Lord Jesus took a body, in all its human brokenness, and his mother placed him in a feeding trough – a foreshadowing of another night, when Jesus would offer his own body, broken as food. That night, when God came to earth, the new covenant began to take shape, a covenant begun with the pains of labor and brought to completion with the agony of the cross. On the night in which he was born, our very God became very human, so that he might live and die for us.

On the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, gave thanks; and broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying, take and drink, this is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

For as often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim that the Lord comes, that the Lord has come, that the Lord will come again. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

God who comes to us, pour out your Holy Spirit upon this bread and wine, and upon all your people gathered here: grant us faith so that we may live in hope; lead us into Peace with self, neighbor, creation, and Creator; bring us the Joy of living in the freedom of salvation; send us out with the Love that is born in Bethlehem and in our hearts; so that we may proclaim Christ in word and deed. Amen. Come, Holy Spirit.

All glory and honor is yours, O God, who comes to fulfill all expectation in the most unexpected of ways, through Jesus Christ the Word made flesh, with the Holy Spirit who breathes life into a dying world; now and forever. Amen.

Gathered together by the Holy Spirit, we pray as Jesus taught us:Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
