Introduction

Stellram’s unique UniDrill® system offers a versatile and wideranging solution to high performance, low cost drilling.Replaceable inserts eliminate the need or requirement forregrinding of worn tooling. The range is from 0.390" diameterto 1.375" diameter in carbide and up to 4.5" diameter in highspeed steel inserts. Insert geometries are available for adiverse range of materials.

The precision insert is located accurately in a toolholder thatcan accommodate a range of diameters. The central locationpin provides accuracy and the opposing location screwsprovide secure clamping of the insert in the toolholder.

The design of the drill body and insert allows for complexmulti-function tools such as drilling, chamfering,counterboring and forming on one drill body. The use ofadvanced CAD/CAM techniques allows for efficient and costeffective designs of special bodies to suit customer specificrequirements.

UniDrill® is available in two ranges that have unique andspecific design features for low cost, high performance andcost effective drilling.

P range Drilling diameters from 0.390" to 1.000" withinserts in carbide and high speed steel grades.Seven bodies and three different lengths offer theability to drill holes up to seven times the nominaldiameter. For specific applications there are extralong bodies for drilling holes from 0.650" diameterto 1.000" diameter.

S range Drilling diameters from 0.984" to 4.500" in highspeed steel and 0.984" to 1.375" diameter incarbide grades. Eight drill bodies and two differentlengths offer the ability to drill holes up to seventimes the nominal diameter.

Both ranges are available with cylindrical shanks or Morsetaper shanks and both ranges have through coolant facility toensure lubrication at the cutting edge and smooth evacuationof chips.

Inserts are available in coated carbide, carbide and coatedhigh speed steel.

A range of four geometries and four grades in carbide andhigh speed steel allow selection of the optimum insert for yourspecific application.

The precision CNC ground drilling insert eliminates the needfor costly regrinding and ensures repeatability of axial toollength.

This geometry has a helically ground point, a strengthened cuttingedge and radial land allowing for excellent centering and high penetrationrates.Diameter range 0.390" - 1.000"

GEOMETRY PR Grade H22(Micrograin carbide)First choice for machining aluminum and other non–ferrous alloys. Thisgeometry has a cross point grind, wide chip groove, high positive webgrind, chip splitters and no radial land. Technical Information

Recommendations for use

• Do not use tools to a depth greater than L1 dimension, the maximum drilling depth.

• Always use the shortest drill possible for maximum rigidity.

• Ensure rigid machine spindle and good clamping of the workpiece

• Through tool coolant highly recommended when drilling depth exceeds 1 x diameter.

• Unidrill® can be used in either static mode (fixed to a turret as in a lathe) or a dynamic mode (rotating asin a machining center). When drilling long chipping materials, take care to select the correct geometry.For these materials it is strongly recommended that a dwell cycle be introduced to help control chipevacuation. This is particularly relevant when using the drill in a vertical mode. A starter drill or centeringdrill with the relevant point angle may be required when using the longer series drills.

Important Notes

When drilling holes over 5 times the diameter, it is important to ensure that all conditions are respected. Anyone or all of the following procedures can be used:

1. Machined surface should be flat and square.

2. A spot drill with an included angle of more than 135° should be used. The maximum diameter of thespot should be 50% of the diameter.

3. In some cases it is advisable to use a short series drill to a maximum depth and then drill to depth withthe longer drill.

4. Half the feed until full radial engagement of the insert is achieved.

When drilling difficult to chip materials, an HSS insert should be considered over carbide.

The technical information provided depends on the environmental and application conditions such as machine, coolant and desiredmachining results: these are based on adequate application conditions and compliance with the spindle limits given.

Safety equipment should be provided to protect shop floor personnel from swarf.To ensure maximum productivity, inserts should be changed regularly.

Drilled surfaces should be flat whenever possible.If the surface angle exceeds 2°, reduce feed by 1/3.

Reduce feed by 1/3 when drilling a concave surface.

Reduce feed on irregular surfaces to prevent insertchipping. This may also be the case when breakingthrough the back end of the hole.

Drill deflection may occur if a predrilled hole existslarger than 1/4 of the finished hole.

Reduce the feed when passing through a cross-drilled hole larger than 1/4 of the drill diameter.

Stacked plates and welded assemblies can be drilledwith Posidrill Plus™.

For best results, a runout of 0.0011"between the the workpiece and drillcenterline should not be exceeded.

The peripheral insert should be parallelto the machine’s axis of transversemovement when mounting the drill.
