Bringing a taste of the Dark Ages to

The Oak Fair at Stock Gaylard this

year will be Avalon Axes, a great

team based in Somerset. The only

Viking inspired axe throwing

outfit in the South West.

Inspired by a sense of the past and our long history, Simon Smith,

Dan Chalmers and Tim Walker are a sight to see as well joining them

and learning to throw axes like a Viking.

You will be given full instruction

by our experienced and fully

insured axe throwers and will be

coached through to success.

They use single head throwing

axes thrown in to wooden

targets.

Their Viking themed

axe throwing is fun and safe.

COME ALONG AND THROW AN

AXE!!!

CHARLIE WAITE

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

Charlie Waite is now firmly established as one of the world’s leading landscape

photographers.

Born in 1949 Waite was inspired to take up photography by his father a keen

portrait photographer and RAF Air Commodore CB CBE whose brainchild was the

Berlin Airlift. Waite started out as a professional actor and remained an actor for

ten years, but soon began a side line photographing his fellow actors including

Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham-Carter, Amelia Fox and Catherine Zeta-Jones

amongst others.

Throughout his time in the theatre, Waite became fascinated by theatrical lighting

and design, but gradually the landscape and the way it can be revealed through

light and shade stole him away from the acting profession.

As a professional photographer, Waite has established a worldwide reputation for

his particular approach to his work. His style is unique in that his photographs

convey a spiritual quality of serenity and calm.

Outside of his own career Waite has done much to raise the profile of photography

and in doing so has become the champion of the everyman photographer. Waite

started the annual Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards, which he set up to

encourage the British to use their camera to engage more closely with their

environments whether urban or rural and in 2003 Waite

set up a company Light & Land, which runs professional landscape photography

workshops and tours all over the world.

A series of Charlie’s photography

highlighting the beautiful British

landscape including well known

local landmarks will be in the Stock

Gaylard marquee on Conservation

Row.

JULIAN HIGHT

AUTHOR World Tree Story

History & legends of the world’s ancient trees

Following the success of Britain’s Tree Story for National Trust in 2011, Julian set out to visit 100 historic, ancient trees of the world. Travelling extensively, from the UK to New Zealand and Australia, Japan to the USA, across Europe and Scandinavia, sourcing subjects from archive engravings and photographs, he re-photographed them in the present day to add historic context.

The result is ‘World Tree Story – history and legends of the world’s ancient trees’ – a beautifully illustrated hardback book documenting 100 magnificent trees across 39 countries – a celebration of the world’s oldest, largest and most famous trees (and sometimes not so famous), detailing their stories, whilst also telling the human tale, and ultimately a call for their preservation.

Julian trained as a graphic designer and musician and has spent most of his working life in publishing. His interest in trees started at a young age as he was lucky enough to live near accessible woodland as a child which had a profound effect on him.

Author of Britain’s Tree Story in 2011, he is an active member of the Woodland Trust and has launched successful campaigns to save endangered trees in his home county of Somerset, gives regular talks around the country about his travels to visit ancient trees and tell their stories, and recently appeared as a judge on Channel 4s ’Tree of the Year’ TV programme.

Julian will be taking groups for a walk around the Oak Fair and discussing the history and ancient tales behind the trees on the site, including our Crusader Oak. These will take place at 11am, 1pm and 3pm on both days of the fair, please head to the Stock Gaylard marquee on Conservation Row where the walks will set off from.

Martin Richards

T H Robinson 1887 Double Blade Reciprocating Planking Saw

Thought to have been installed new in 1887 to The Greystone Estate, near Lake

Windermere where it was driven by a 16 foot overshot waterwheel via various

overhead line shafts which also drove the rest of the saw mills equipment

including 2 planners, morticer, drill & 2 small saw benches. In later years the

water wheel was replaced by a water turbine.

One of its main uses was cutting planks for coffin making as at the time it was very

efficient due to being able to cut 2 planks simultaneously. This reciprocating saw

was taken out of use in the 1950’s when it was replaced with a circular rack bench

along side it. The saw mill itself & all the other equipment including the belt

driven generator was in regular use until the year 2000, when the saw mill was

converted into holiday lets.

The saw was dismantled & transported back to Dorset. Martin Richards the owner

has re-assembled it & mounted it onto a chassis to enable it to be towed &

exhibited at various shows over the past 14 years. To enable the saw to be used

as you see it today the line shaft from the saw mill complete with its numerous

pulleys had to be removed, modified and relocated to decrease the running

speed as opposed to previously being set up to increase the speed from the slow

running waterwheel.
