TOP STOCKS 2014The Stories Behind the Big Winners
Stock GuideWinter 2015
As we head into 2015, it is important for investors to look back on 2014 to gain insight and perspective into one’s investing successes and failures. At this time, the NASDAQ is up about 10%, though it has certainly been a choppy ride back and forth between positive and negative territory.
In this winter edition of the Stock Guide, we’ll review the best performing stocks and industry groups of the year, like Initial Public Offerings (IPOs). IPOs were some of the best performers this year if one was able to navigate the volatility and take profits in a disciplined fashion. If not, many profits disappeared in a matter of weeks. The rapidity of potential losses is why our shop focuses on a post-analysis: to prevent these draw-downs and losses from occurring in the future, thus increasing our long term portfolio returns.
The stock screens in this edition were selected to help guide our 2014 post-analysis. Not only do the screens capture the best performing stocks and industry groups of this year, but they also try to locate emerging winners for next year. Only by studying the top stocks of 2014 can we ensure that we’ll take advantage of the outsized gains of next year’s top stocks.
Best returns,

How to do a Post AnalysisA post-analysis is a review of your previous year’s stocks with the purpose of improving your investing skills going forward. You review your own personal trades as well as the year’s best performing stocks.
When you review your trades, you want to focus on the biggest winners and the biggest losers. Perhaps there is a common attribute that your losers share that you can identify and mitigate. If you can eliminate a few of your biggest losers, then your performance will be greatly improved going forward. Investing isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon. Only by continually improving yourself can you achieve long term investing success.
When you review the top stocks of the year, you’ll want to mark up the charts with potential buy and sell signals. Our Summer Stock Guide focused on buy signals: classic breakouts, advanced buying strategies, the importance of the RS Line, IPO bases, and when faulty bases evolve into constructive bases.

Our Autumn Stock Guide reviewed the two different sell strategies: offensive and defensive selling. Offensive selling is selling on the way up into strength. Here are a few of the offensive sell signals: climax top, upper channel line break, and sharp pullback and fast recovery to new highs. Defensive selling is selling on the way down into weakness. Here are a few of the defensive selling signals: break below the 50-day moving average on big volume increase and largest one day point loss.
If necessary, go back and review those two stock guides for more in-depth discussion on each of those topics. The following pages will include examples of marked-up charts with buy and sell signals that you can use as models for your post-analysis.

2014’s Future Earnings Growth
Discover stocks with strong earnings and the promise of continued growth.
If a company’s future looks promising, it can attract
institutional investors, improving the likelihood the stock
price will increase. To gauge the status of a company’s
future, their consensus earnings estimates should always
be positive and the stronger the estimates the better. Keep
in mind estimates are only opinions, while actual reported
earnings are facts.

2014’s Top IPOs
Identifies the top performing IPOs of the past year.
IPOs were some of the best performers this year if one
was able to navigate their volatility and take profits in a
disciplined fashion. If not, many profits disappeared in a
matter of weeks. The rapidity of potential losses is why we
focus on post-analysis: to prevent these draw-downs and
losses from occurring in the future, thus increasing our long
term portfolio returns.
