Strategic alliances and partnerships have formed the basis of the Euro Steel Group’s thinking, and in spite of the Group’s growth

as a whole, our original philosophy of specifi c product focus remains, hence the Group continues to consist of niche companies –

each catering for its particular industry’s demands. Euro Special Steels (ESS) has established a supply and distribution agreement with

ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe – Heavy Plate division, Germany. With the Group’s experience and distribution infrastructure within the

African Market, coupled with ThyssenKrupp Steel’s worldwide reputation of producing quality products, a powerful partnership has been

built, one which will see ThyssenKrupp’s special steels made easily accessible to the Southern African mining and transport industries.

Different XAR® grades for different applicationsThe standard wear-resistant steel grade is XAR® 400, which can increase product service life to fi ve times that of conventional structural

steel. XAR® 400 combines high wear resistance with good cold formability and weldability. It is the most frequently used wear-resistant

steel worldwide for many different applications.

XAR® 450 is the best choice where requirements call for higher wear resistance combined with virtually the same processing

characteristics as the standard XAR® 400 grade. XAR® 450 is expected to increasingly replace the standard XAR® 400 steel grade in the

future. XAR® 500 steel, which is formable and weldable, is available for even higher abrasive wear.

ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe’s solution to your wear problems

Balanced alloying concepts for simple processing and wear resistanceExtensive wear investigations carried out on XAR® steels have shown that optimum abrasion resistance is achieved through their high

hardness, and in particular the specifi c alloying with Cr and Nb. Toughness and cold-forming behaviour, as well as resistance to impact

wear are increased through the Nb-microalloying. Cr-alloying improves wear resistance, especially in aggressively corrosive media.

The lean analysis concepts and low carbon equivalent of XAR® steels make cutting and welding easier, and provide better cold forming

properties with tight bending radii. For instance MAG welding without preheating is possible up to a thickness of 20mm (40mm

combined thickness) for XAR® 400 plates, and up to 15mm (30mm combined thickness) for XAR® 450 plates. 10mm thick XAR® 400

plates can be bent with radii as small as r/t > 4.0 (10mm thick XAR® 450 plates with r/t > 5.0).

Modern shot blasting and priming line offers high surface qualityPlates are delivered shot blasted and primed to meet the

highest surface quality requirements. A low-zinc silicate

primer is usually applied with an even coat 12-18µ thick.

Studies have shown that plates with this primer can be

cut by laser or welded over without complications, making

removal of the primer before welding generally unnecessary.

XAR® (eXtra Abrasion Resistant) steels are ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe’s

solution for applications where problems and cost increases are the

results of wear and abrasion. Thanks to the high level of hardness

achieved through the special chemical composition of the XAR® steels

and their quenching and tempering heat treatment, abrasion can be

minimised and product service life extended.

Quenched and tempered steel for different applicationsThe most common quenched and tempered structural steel is N-A-XTRA® M700, which meets customer requirements for high strength

and easy processing. N-A-XTRA® M700 combines a high yield strength of at least 700MPa with outstanding toughness at temperatures

down to -40oC. It’s lean chemical composition makes it ideal for cold forming and all common welding methods. N-A-XTRA® M700 has

proved itself over 50 years in many different applications, especially in mining, construction and earth moving equipment.

Quenched and tempered N-A-XTRA® M700 steel for lighter living

Balanced alloying concepts for simple processing and high strengthThe special chemical composition and the quenching and tempering heat treatment of N-A-XTRA® M700 steel gives it excellent

toughness properties for reliable performance even at extremely low temperatures.

Depending on welding method, plate thicknesses up to 20mm (or combined thicknesses up to 40mm) can be welded without preheating.

Furthermore N-A-XTRA® M700 displays good cold forming properties allowing tight bending radii. Plates up to 6mm thick can be bent

with radii as low as r/t > 2.5 (> 6mm to 16 mm thick plates with r/t > 3).

The high-strength quenched and tempered N-A-XTRA® M700 steels from ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe make living lighter and

easier. In highly stressed structures they allow a reduction of the plate thickness and thus lighter buildings. By substituting

N-A-XTRA® M700 in place of general structural steel S355 (St 52-3) allows a 50% reduction in plate thickness. Further advantage

of high-strength steels are lower consumption of welding fi llers and reduced welding costs. Light-weight is particularly important

in commercial vehicle and mobile crane construction, where dimensions, axle loads and total weight of the vehicle are restricted

by legal regulations. Various other grades of structural steels are available on request. Thickness range 4-100mm.

PERFORM Steels for Cold Forming

Depending on grade, PERFORM cut-to-length plates can be produced in widths up

to 2,000mm. Due to their outstanding range of properties and high surface quality,

cut-to-length plates of PERFORM cold forming steel are ideal for continuous parts

manufacture from laser-cut blanks. The close thickness and width tolerances not

only benefi t press brake forming (more uniform forming properties, reduced spring

back), but also contribute to a reduction in gross vehicle weight. They therefore

permit increases in productivity in vehicle manufacture. PERFORM steels have

been used successfully for a long time in a variety of applications, including the

production of:

• Vehicle frame structures

• Vehicle side and cross members

• Booms of truck mounted cranes

and concrete pump trucks

• Agricultural machinery

• Profi le structures and containers.

Truck manufacture requires

high-strength steels capable

of reducing gross vehicle

weight to allow greater

payloads. At the same time,

these steels have to be easy

to weld and cold-form, for

example for the production

of truck substructures or the

booms of truck mounted

cranes.

PERFORM steels contain low

amounts of carbon and micro-alloying elements, resulting in outstanding weldability.

They also offer very high cleanness, achieved by means of ladle metallurgy in the

steel melting shop, and an extremely fi ne-grained microstructure, developed by

thermomechanical rolling. From these factors result the excellent ductility and cold

formability of PERFORM steels. PERFORM steels are usually produced via the hot strip mill

route as cut-to-length plates with minimum yield strength levels from 315 to 700 MPa.
