Southam Poppy Appeal 2019

At last we have been able to bank the 2019 Poppy Appeal money and I would like to say congratulations to Southam

and the surrounding villages. The total for the 2019 appeal so far is £12279.25 A special Thank You goes out to all those who gave up their time to collect and support the Poppy Appeal again this year and to all those who had a Poppy Box at their business or school In April this year The Hub, a new community space, will be open at Galanos House. This is a great example of where the Poppy Appeal money is spent locally. The Hub will be open to everyone, so I hope you will all come and visit once it is open Jo-Anne Wilson, Manager Galanos House

Knit and Natter

We have been meeting for a several years now. It started with a few people. We began to make poppies. This really got everyone making poppies. It felt that the whole village got involved. People were bringing them every Monday, even if they were not staying. After that we began to make Nativity figures, one set for the church and one for the school. At times we had about 30 people. This has decreased lately and it would be great to welcome more people. Not everyone knits or does cro-chet, it can be any craft. Playing Rummicub is a lovely game and very popular with the non crafters. We have made blankets and baby clothes for refugees in Coventry. Teddy bears for the Buddy bag scheme run by Rotary for the Emergency Services. Sometimes we even knit or crochet for ourselves. The really nice thing is that we enjoy each others company. We help each other where we can. At the moment we are making items such as scarves, hats, blankets, teddies for the new shop at Galanos House. This will bring them an income to help their residents. We meet every Monday from 2 till 4 pm

STOCKTON PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS www.stockton.warwickshire.sch.uk Tel: 01926 812483 Head - Mrs. Ann Bedgood

Taken from Newsletter dated 14th February (Edited) Georgia Toay who was a Junior Female Champion with the Bouncers Skipping Club, London was our skipping coach today. She also won a bronze medal in the pairs double dutch speed relay at the European Rope Skipping Championships. Everyone has enjoyed their skipping workshops—it was lovely to see some of the Willow and Beech children practising their skills on the playground at lunch time. Oak and Maple had their sessions in the afternoon and many of them were surprised at how much hard work it is to skip well, it’s a fun, healthy and creative way to get exercise. Thank you to Skipping Workshops for coming in to work with us today, and to the PTA for funding the day. We will be putting our new skills to good use for Sport Relief after half term, as we have a whole school skipathon planned to raise money!

STOCKTON PARISH COUNCIL Meetings held every 3rd Monday in Village Hall 7.15pm.

Full copies of approved minutes available from Clerk to Parish Council Mr. W.J. Robinson Tel: 01926 814094 or

website .www.stockton-warks-pc.gov.uk

NOTES OF FEBRUARY 2020 MEETING These are informal notes only, for a full record please refer to the approved minutes on our website. Planning Matters: Scout field - A planning application for building self-build homes on the Scout field is held up because Stratford District Council have not finalised their Site Allocations Plan (SAP) or Built Up Area Boundary (BUAB) The parish council will write to the Head of Planning and the Chief Executive to urge them to get these documents approved urgently. The Crown Inn: representatives of the owner tabled plans for demolishing the barn and replacing with rented apartments and a small business unit. A planning application will be submitted in the next few weeks. Land behind Laurels Farm: the application to build three houses on this site was rejected by Stratford Planning Committee despite it being recommended for approval by the planning officer. The parish council objected on the ground of over-development of the site, its overbearing nature and the hazardous entrance next to the footpath to the playing field. Stockton House: 2 applications for removal of a dead pine tree and dead elm tree covered by tree protection orders have been approved. Stratford Green Bin Charge: Stratford Council are proposing to levy a charge of £40 for each green garden waste bin effective from 1st June. Our District Councillor, Louis Adam, has submitted a motion to delay this date because locally there has been insufficient consultation over the effect on the civic amenity site at Stockton. Warwickshire County Council: Council Tax Increase: this is likely to be 3.99% made up of a general rate increase of 1.9% and a special rate increase of 2% for adult care services. Average speed cameras - the council are proposing to instal average speed cameras at sites in the county with high accident levels Villager of the Year: the deadline for nominations has now passed and three nominations have been received - Ashley Leeman, Gary Coles and James Neal. There will be more details at the next parish council meeting when a decision on the winner will be made. Village facilities: the locked post at the entrance to the playing field footpath has been broken and Mick Childs will see if it can be repaired. Jaguar Land Rover staff take part in community activity days and have offered to take on projects in the village. Painting play equipment at the playing field and painting the school railings were suggested. Community forum: the next forum will take place at 7pm on Wednesday 25th March at Southam Primary School.

Next meeting: 7.15 pm on Monday 16th March in the village hall. Howard Collerson (Chairman) I am typing this whilst watching Storm Dennis out of my window, definitely not a day to be outside. I would like to pass on my thanks to all the public/emergency services who keep Warwickshire moving and safe at times like these. On Feb 18th, WCC will set its budget for 2020/21, with its share of the Council

Tax likely to increase by 1.99% for most services plus another 2.00% for Adult Social Care, a total of 3.99%. Like most authorities, WCC's Finances face many challenges. It should be noted that approximately 80% of its budget goes on Children and Adult Social Care, Education, SEND, School Transport and Fire & Rescue. My areas e.g Fire & Rescue, Flooding, Community & Road Safety will be receiving above inflation increases to improve safety in Warwickshire. There will be a trial of average speed cameras in Warwickshire, these cameras have had a dramatic effect on accidents in the London Road, Coventry for example. You may be aware WCC has declared a climate emergency and a Task & Finish Group has formulated a series of actions. Evidence shows that across areas of WCC's , direct emissions a 53% reduction of carbon emissions has been achieved by 2013/14 & 2018/19. In addition WCC is purchasing green electricity for all corporate buildings, reducing emissions further (to a total reduction of 82%). Obviously there is still much more to be done. WCC's impacts have been categorised into 3 main areas - buildings & energy, travel & transport : resources. Some impacts are due to fossil fuels being used for WCC assets (heating buildings & fuelling fleet), some impacts from contracts WCC let, staff travelling for work and to work, as well as delivery of WCC's purchases to its properties. Having established mechanisms for monitoring and reducing the Council's own emissions, WCC will be able to support partners and Warwickshire businesses and communities to reduce their own impact. (I can give you have more details of some of the initiatives if you email me at [email protected]). This is something WCC cannot achieve on its own. Finally, I continue to deal with speeding, streetlighting, pot holes, overgrown paths, road safety, signage, flooding, trading standards, school places, flooding and many other issues which keep me busy. Hopefully it will dry up soon.

Best wishes Andy Myself and some other Councillors are challenging the Green Bin Charge by proposing a 6 month delay it its implementation to be able to determine how central government plans to address funding waste collection and for a more extensive consultation to be carried out, including with the County Council who manage Stockton Recycling Centre. I am hopeful that this will ultimately allow for the charge to be scrapped but this will be decided at future full council meetings.

The planning application in the village for three houses on Becks Lane was refused following myself and the Parish Council speaking at the planning committee meeting. This was on the basis of over development of the village based on current housing numbers and the scheme being deemed out of keeping with the village. I hope for this to form a good precedent allowing local communities to have more say over prospective permissions in the future. I have asked Jeremy Wright MP to speak with the Secretary of State for transport regarding the lack of an independent enforcement body to hold HS2 Ltd. to account during construction. I have had support for this from other local Councillors. The Dallas Burston Polo Club parkrun being set up by local residents should be up and going in the Spring and I'm glad to say that SDC were able to support this with a grant on the basis that it is a good community scheme, encouraging accessible activity; please keep an eye out for details form the organisers. Feel Free to get in touch. Kind Regards, Cllr Louis Adam

Using our imagination! I have just been away for a short training course on using our imagination. Obviously this was within the context of church life – how we could approach our mission and ministry more imaginatively and creatively. But it seems to me that some of the learning could apply to our lives in general. Imagination helps us use space more creatively. Imagination helps us see ourselves, others, the world and God in a different way. Marcel Proust said “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” On the course, we looked at how we could develop our imagination through nature and the outdoors, through art, poetry, music and story-telling. Imagination is about awakening a song deep within us and bringing it to life. How often do we spend time to allow something to happen within us – to receive what is already there? We should always live within our own identity – know ourselves for who we are – but also recognise the opportunity for re-figuration / re-vision, to explore new possibilities of being and doing. Pay attention, take an interest in what is going on around us. Let it help us discover more of ourselves. Look for the spark! I love the words from the hymn “Amazing grace”: “I once was lost but now am found; was blind but now I see”. Let’s use our imagination to help us see – more of ourselves, of the world, of God. God bless, Gillian

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER 2020

FRIDAY 6th MARCH10.30am

The Church of St John the Baptist,

Lower Shuckburgh THEME

Rise! Take your mat and walk

A service of hymns and readings

With time for reflection, relating to the theme,

followed by refreshments.

These services, which take place world wide every year on the first Friday in

March, are organised by Christian women from around the world. Each one lasts about an hour.

The first service begins as the sun rises over Samoa and ends some 38 hours lat-er, back in the Pacific, as the sun sets over American Samoa.

This year’s service has been prepared by Christian women of Zimbabwe.

It includes interesting information about the history, geography and way of life in Zimbabwe.

Previously named ‘Women’s World Day of Prayer’, These services are definitely NOT for women alone. People from all six parishes in The Bridges Group

will be taking part, and Everyone is very warmly invited to attend.

MARCH

In the past we have had polytunnel covers ripped by strong winds so when I saw the forecast for storm Ciara my anxiety levels were high. There is little we can do to prevent damage and although I know worrying is futile it's not easy to feel relaxed at such a time. When the wind was at its worst on the Sunday I tried to keep busy at home with loud music on but kept imagining the clear up which would need doing if the tunnels were wrecked. We were lucky this time with no tears or rips but now I'm dreading storm Dennis which is forecast for this weekend. We had been drying out but once again it's too wet to go in the garden. If it gets better there will be quite a lot of catching up to do with the jobs....... Cut back any perennials which you haven't already done. Prune dogwoods, a third of the old stems down to the ground. Prune roses Sow hardy annuals (bought from Higgledy Garden online) If your sweet peas are growing well then pinch out the tips to encourage stronger plants. Sow parsnips, broad beans, peas and spring onions. Plant onions and shallots. Divide large clumps of snowdrops into smaller clumps and spread around the garden. Christine Dakin, Bridge Nursery

JANUARY 2020 HEADLINES - Not really winter was it ?

In January the average minimum temperature was 3.3 deg. C, one and a half degrees above the average (1.7 deg.). The lowest temperature was -2.5 deg. C on the 19th. The average maximum temperature was 7.5 deg.C. just above the average (7.1 deg.C). The highest temperature was 11.2 deg. C on the 14th. Rainfall this month was 54.5 mm, just under half of the average (60 mm). The wettest day was the 9th with 12 mm. It rained on 16 days. Sunshine was slightly below average with 8% less. The wind blew mostly from the south-west and south (23 days). Trivia of the month - With the wind blowing mostly from the south and south-west it has been very mild and only five January months have been warmer since 1892, the latest being 2008. With only four air frosts in January 2020 we have to go back to 1983 to record fewer air frosts.

STOCKTON’S WEATHER STATION

Sue opened the meeting and she and Joan took us through the notices and forthcoming events after we sang “Jerusalem”. Sue welcomed our two visitors and we are happy to say they have decided to join us. Sue informed us that the WI is now a charitable organisation and reminded us of the Annual Federation Meeting in March at the Dallas Burston Polo Club. She mentioned a forthcoming Plastics Day on 18th February and also the Produce Show at Bearley in August saying that Joan has the classes information for interested members. We did particularly well at the last WI produce show held at Napton only missing winning on combined points by an extremely narrow margin. Joan mentioned the various forthcoming trips and told us that Liz is now a WI Climate Ambassador giving information on recycling etc. She said that the 2020 Appeal is for old spectacles and could we bring our old glasses to the March meeting or to the Annual Federation Meeting if attending. There was information for an appeal for knitting and details of Napton Art Group on 11 - 12th April at the village hall. Joan asked us for ideas for the V E Day anniversary weekend on 8 - 10th May. These will be put forward at a meeting to

be held in February. She asked for names of the people who wanted to receive the Corunna News. The Treasure Hunt is to be held in Southam this year and details were available of forthcoming shows Crazy for You and Chicago for those interested. Sheila was happy to tell us that the Fashion Show is scheduled for April 22nd at the village hall so SAVE THE DATE LADIES! This is open to everyone, not just the WI. She requested volunteers for 8 models. More information is to follow in the next edition of Stockton’s News. Sally has organised the next ladies lunch at the Crown so we look forward to that. Wendy explained about the green hearts some of us have made at craft club to spread awareness of climate change and she had displayed these on an aluminium foil constructed branch and very pretty they looked too. Afterwards these were gifted to other members and some may find their way to the local MP. She told us that some of our future makes are Easter chicks, corn dollies as well as the WI Banner we are all working on. If you don’t wish to do specific projects you can bring your own sewing, in fact Sally and I were decorating our plain T shirts with buttons and trim today. Wendy told us about Grandborough farmer’s market on the last Thursday of the month in the church and in fact a large group, car sharing, went particularly enjoying the tea and cakes. Sue took us through the Resolutions which were to be voted nationally and which were to become our future campaigns. Joan then introduced the speaker Anthony Poulton-Smith whose talk was History of the Joke. He had written 78 books on various subjects and told us about ancient jokes both verbal and in basic pictures. He said that humour has changed enormously throughout the generations and we have to say that most of his jokes barely raised a chuckle. He did say though that toilet humour never changes! Sue thanked the speaker telling her own joke, one of our favourites from Dad’s Army where the captured German U-boat captain asked for names of the soldiers who had captured him and Captain Mannering or Corporal Jones said “don’t tell him Pike”. We have heard it hundreds of times but still brought the best

laughter! We then played Consequences, we hadn’t played it for years. I wonder who remembers it. Val won the raffle and Wendy the competition for the winter foliage arrangement. Our next meeting will be Monday 2nd March at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall when we will be hearing about the Ifakara Bakery Project. The competition is 3 homemade cupcakes.

This year is flying by fast and we find ourselves looking forward to our third film to be shown on Saturday March 28th. “Once upon a time in Hollywood” visits 1969 Los Angeles where everything is changing, as TV star Rick Dalton and his long-time stunt double Cliff Booth make their way around an industry they hardly recognise anymore. Starring Leonardo Dicpario, Al Pacino and Brad Pitt. We have been asked to explain how the Stockton Cinema Film Nights work so here is a brief account of how we work with Live and Local based in Warwick. To show any DVD to an invited audience you need a licence. This costs money and Live and Local arrange all the licences, the DVD, the poster and ticket format, information on film choice and equipment if required. When we set up the Film Nights approximately one year ago we did our research going to other villages’ film nights to see how they operate and how they made the evening work. We got ideas one example was having the tables and chairs rather than just rows of chairs with nowhere to put a drink and snacks. We then looked at the equipment other villages in the scheme either owned or borrowed from Live and Local. It soon became apparent that most had purchased their own equipment and as you know this is the route we have recently taken too. About 6 weeks before the month in question a choice of 6 to 8 films is sent out to all the villages on the rota. The films are then sent onto our village hall trustees for a decision on which film they would like to be screened. When all the votes are in our favourite it sent back to Live and Local. When all the votes are in the two top films are sent out for the final choice to be made. This is again voted on and we request our top film to be sent out to us. The licence and all the other paperwork is sorted by Live and Local and when we receive the poster and ticket template, these are printed up and displayed throughout the village and tickets distributed for sale. We have in the past decided that we didn’t like any of the film choices and requested a particular film to screen. The licence was obtained and we showed that film which was a success. Live and Local send out an invoice after the screening and this is calculated on tickets sales. At Stockton Village Hall we pride ourselves on keeping the ticket price as low as possible because this is a service we want to make accessible to all villagers. We may make a very small profit if we have a full house and we do make a small profit on the refreshments too. We are sure you will all agree the whole evening is very reasonable at £3 per ticket if purchased before the night. The trustees put in an enormous effort to maintain the high standard our film night’s offer. Some duties include collecting heavy equipment from other villages, posting DVD’s, printing posters and tickets, selling the tickets and putting up posters. Then on the day in question, several members are at the hall

setting up hours before to make sure everything runs smoothly. And of course when the guests arrive the Trustees are there making coffee, serving refreshments, putting out tables, running the film, even putting out the lights is an art and making the decision when to have the interval, well that is a real talent. And of course someone has to introduce the film, do the emergency exit bits, the thank you’ at the end and don’t forget the door prize in the interval. After the film there is the clearing up to do, washing up, tables to wipe down and store away, refreshments to be packed and the list goes on. We hope this gives you an insight into what we do, how we do it and why. We really do enjoy putting on the film nights and look forward to seeing you in March. VH Trustees

Southam’s French Street Market – Sunday 5th April Southam will once again be hosting the ever-popular French Street Market

on Sunday April 5th between 10am and 4pm. The traders who visit us annually are mostly based in Normandy and travel across the Channel to bring us a fantastic range of tempting French food and produce to try. ‘France At Home’ have been organising these events for more than 25 years, and together with volunteers from Southam First they will transform Southam’s High Street into a French-style market. Freshly baked bread, croissants, cakes, biscuits and crêpes are things that the French do really well, and there will be a wonderful variety and style of baking to tempt you. Savoury street food, tartiflette, delicious cheeses, olives from Provence, cooked meats, paté and saucisson, will all be there to persuade you to try something a little different from your traditional Sunday lunch. Beautiful French patisserie, tarts, cakes and pastries will make your teatime special too! There will be hand-made crafts, toys, games, baskets, leather bags and purses, fashions and accessories, vintage music and many more French-themed products that are not normally available on the High Street. Southam’s main High Street will be closed to all vehicles, so everyone can enjoy the market in a safe, traffic-free environment. With plenty of free parking, this is a family-friendly event and the organisers are hoping to attract both residents and visitors from around the district to enjoy a very special market day in Southam.

Rosemary Winnall will give an illustrated talk entitled ‘Hidden Places, Secret Lives’ at 7:30pm, Monday 16th March

at the Graham Adams Centre, St James Rd., Southam.

All are welcome. Non-members £3.50 (includes refreshments).

WORLD WAR II DEAD - DENIS WALL Service no. 237265 Royal Navy.

Able Seaman Denis Wall was born 16 September 1922 at Harbury, the son of Ernest Edward Wall and Hilda Margery (nee Marlow). The family originally lived in George Street but Ernest was one of those men who went on strike at the cement works and were thrown out of their houses by George Blyth, the manager. They then lived in an ex-army wooden nissen hut, called The Bungalow, at the rear of the The Crown pub. The family comprised of Geoffrey, Edward (called Bill), Mavis (now Mrs. Montgomery and living in Long Itchington), Gerald and Pete (living in Worthing). Geoffrey was among the first soldiers who went into Belsen concentration camp when it was liberated. Able Seaman Wall was lost at sea on 4 March 1942 whilst serving on HMS Anking off Java. HMS Anking was a depot ship that was part of a convoy sailing out of Singapore accompanied by the tanker Francol, a minesweeper MMS-51 and escorted by the Australian sloop HMAS Yarra. They may have been evacuating people during the fall of Singapore to the Japanese. The convoy was making for Fremantle in Australia. It ran into a formidable group of Japanese cruisers Atago, Takao and Maya accompanied by four destroyers. The Yarra’s captain laid down a smokescreen and ordered the other boats to scatter while he held off the Japanese warships. Unfortunately the three other ships were all pursued and sunk, as was the Yarra. The Anking was torpedoed by a Japanese cruiser at 6.30 am and sank in 10 minutes with the loss of 1 officer and 25 ratings. 57 survivors were picked up later that day by a Dutch vessel, The Tawali. Denis’s name is recorded on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial at Southsea (panel 65, column 1) and he is also commemorated on the gravestone of a relative, Leonard Hodges, in Stockton churchyard.

Taken from 2003 copy of Stockton News Let’s have Water and Houses 19th March 1938 Stockton’s annual parish meeting was held on Tuesday, Mr. S.J. Way (Chairman, Parish Council) presiding. The chairman referred to the death during the year of the Clerk (Mr. Arnold Taylor), and the Chairman (Rev. A.M. Pryde) leaving the district. On the question of the water supply, he said the Council had always striven for a good and adequate supply, but with no great success, and were beginning to think that they were the Cinderella of the rural district. “We cannot find a slipper, but we have the boot. I refer to the recent circular issued by the Rural District Council asking for the opinion of householders. At the moment we do not know the result of this, but we are sure that many have signed the Rugby scheme who would not, had the circumstances been different. Whatever the result, the Council intends to press for an adequate and pure supply of water from a source which is under supervision. We were elected to represent the parish and we intend to do so.” (applause) Their neighbours, Long Itchington, had tap water and their ashes removed weekly and other services, and what was reasonable for Long Itchington was equally desirable at Stockton. It was reported that there were eleven applications for a cottage in the village, and the opinion was expressed that Stockton required 30 houses to meet the situation. The Clerk was instructed to write to the R.D.C. on the matter. It was pointed out that the electric light contract terminated at the end of the year, when new arrangements will be made. Mrs Irene Harkins found this cutting in a wartime copy of the Leamington Courier. Stockton Water Supply:- The annual par ish meeting was held at the Council School on Monday, when the question of water was discussed, many instances of shortage in the village being ventilated. Other property-holders by whom the new water supply to Southam passes are still having to cart water from the village. The Chairman read a copy of the letter received from the Ministry of Health. Parish Council:- At the annual meeting of the Par ish Council there were present Messrs. S.J. Way, G. Wilks, C.T. Lee, H. Taylor, and S. Warner, with Mr. James Lickorish (Clerk). Mr. Way was again elected Chairman and Mr. Wilks Vice-Chairman. The Chairman expressed his pleasure at seeing the Clerk now back at his duties after his long illness, and the Council moved a vote of thanks to Mr. H. Taylor, who had carried out the duties of Clerk to the Council during the last 18 months. Complaints were received about the high hedge at the top of Mount Pleasant, and it was decided to write Mr. Weeks to have it attended
